Michael Mauer Interview (New Porsche Head Designer)

    2. (Sorry it's a bit wonky)

Re: Michael Mauer Interview (New Porsche Head Designer)

    Thanks Atlantis

    Mauer looks promising

Re: Michael Mauer Interview (New Porsche Head Designer)

No mention that he had any prior intrest about sports cars either on a personal or professional level before Porsche.

So he fits perfectly with Porsche's current corporate mindset.

Where the passion or vision for the customers, products and the company?

Re: Michael Mauer Interview (New Porsche Head Designer)

It says he was involved in designing the SLK and SL

A quick google search tells me Harm Lagaay worked for Simca before moving to porsches

I am not trying to be funny but why do they need a designer? Since they are commited to the rear engine set up, they can tweak here and there and their rabid fan base will continue to buy.

Re: Michael Mauer Interview (New Porsche Head Designer)

Hmmmmm... so are you saying the 911 is so good that doesn't need looks to be succesful and build a rabid fan base the size of its production figure, while other makers need to rely on the looks and image to sell their cars and hence the greater need for designers? ... never though I'd agree with you Nick!

Re: Michael Mauer Interview (New Porsche Head Designer)

    lol carlos!

but it's true, the cayenne is a perfect example, before it's release it was critisized blah blah blah, but now it sells more than any other current porsche model. a perfect example of how the name of the brand can boost sales

Exactly my point! Not to generalize, but Porsche fans do not concern themselves with styling. More important to them is performance. As a result, Porsche sees no need to change in any radical way.

However, let us not forget that the one time Porsche did a major radical change to the 911 it was their best seller.

I suspect the 998 will be out sooner than anticipated and it will not long like the 997.

998 probably is 4 years away, but before that comes the Suburban fighting 7 seat cayenne, The M5 stompin Panamera
and maybe a stretched Cayman hybrid

All of wich makes a used F355 and F360 look very very attractive to escape the Porsche horde look.

Nick - the style differences between the F360 and F430 are no less subtle than those between the 996 and 997

Re: Michael Mauer Interview (New Porsche Head Designer)

Car designers move around a lot - they show up on a Monday - figure out what company they are now working for and then begin to " draw " something within that constraint and if they are one of those forced to be quoted , will spew some carefully crafted prescripted babble to the press about " heritage " and " brand values " whether a Mini, a Ferrari or a FIAT truck ( see Frank Stephenson ) or a MBZ, Slaab, or Porsche ( see Michael Mauer ).

Re: Michael Mauer Interview (New Porsche Head Designer)

It didn't take long for you to return to your previous self...

"The last sentence of the quote registered with me. I will acknowledge there is a sense of timelessness when one looks at a Porsche. Nothing radical or offensive. It slowly matures and ages with a certain elegance. I can think of several high end products that have the same evolutionary timelessness.

In the future, when I look at a 911 I will see it differently"

Brunner I see no contradiction with what I wrote earlier. I am predicting that business reasons will force Porsche to once again radicalize the 911 whether it is related to styling or configuration. I honestly do not feel in today's market, evolution will work in the Porsche family of cars. My reason is there are just too many models with me to looks.

Had the 911 been a stand alone, the situation would be different. Bottom line is what sells Porsche is the badge along with its past reputation of quality and performance.

Grant, though styling opinion is subjective, I would wager that if you took a dweeb who knew nothing about cars he/she would recognize the difference immediately between the 430 and the 360.

Don't you think the same person could recognize the 997 from the 996 (new headlights and all...)?

Absolutely, there is pretty much the same amount of difference between the 360 and 430 than between the 996 and 997 IMHO.
Profile wise, 430 is similar to 360. It just has the big nostrils, and the Enzo's front and back lights.
A 360 on steroids with its good and back points I guess.
Same thing for a 997 although the back it also quite similar to the 996 appart from the bigger hips but the fronts are quite distinctive.

Yes, because they would think the 997 is a 993. From the back and side, the 997 is almost identical to the 996.Only a real enthusiast could tell the difference.

    The average person really can't tell a 964 from a 997.
The 996 is remarkable though for its fried egg headlamps
    and atrocious inside door panels.
