I do not think that the hardtop is necessary anymore.
After the 986 update two MYs ago, the new soft top features a glass rear window and not the plastic version anymore.
According to my dealer, after that change most customers are happy without a hardtop and they do not recommend it anymore. And I tend to agree. I still have the older 986 softtop with the flexible window and no hardtop. And it was absolutely okay for winter time. Only the rear window is somewhat delicate and you have to be careful with that. That was the only point when I thought about buying a hardtop. As that is not an issue for the current models, I would not consider a hard top anymore.

I hear it is nice because, with a hard top the acrylic canvas material will be protected from the wear and tear of snow, cold and wet and all that mechanical wear of brushing snow and ice off the top.
The cloth top DOES has a liner (or two?) so is quiet and thermally insulated

Another issue apart from the PITA of removing / refitting, do you have storage room for the thing when it is off? And you miss the chance of winter driving with the roof down which can be brilliant. I enjoyed just that - even in an S2000! I've not given it even a moments thought for my Boxster.

I would strongly advise you to get it Dedam.
The good think is, if you change your mind, you can get after you bought the car.
But you get a different look for your car.
It provides better sounds isolation, I know it because I have a hardtop on my 996.
The rear view becomes much better.
Not too sure about the heat propagation inside the car though, maybe it's more spychological.
But I would definitely advise you to get it. It's not that expensive when you think about it.
As for storing it in the summer time, well, that's life. But if you have a garage, you're sorted then.
And honestly, it's very easy to put on or remove, you need someone to help though but considering you do the operation twice a year, and that it takes less than 5 minutes, I wouldn't consider it an issue at all.

I am in the middle trading in my wives Cayenne for the BoxterS
For the Cayenne we get a very good resale price
We do not want to sell the car ourself because off all the risks involving selling the Cayenne to people you do not know
In Holland lots off Cayenne and X5 are being Carrjacked or worse you get a gun to your head.
And in a few minutes the car is driven in a container and shipped to eastern Europe thu the port off Rotterdam

In the UK Pounds1,030. Hard to improve the handling I agree, main benefit as I understand it is improved ride quality especially on the 19" wheels. Opinion is split - RC recommends it, other sources say that the benefits are "marginal". I am currently against having it, I think. But if you want the sport chrono ( I don't) you need it as the latter can't firm up the standard suspension!
