    GT4RS

    https://www.motor1.com/news/404094/porsche-cayman-gt4-rs-spied/

I guess the project is still a go since that time I saw it at Weissach.

Exterior wise nothing really changed. The louvers behind the side windows are air intake for the engine.

    Re: GT4RS

Depending on the power tuning, which should be in the 450ish range, this will be THE car to have in the whole Porsche range.

Nimble mid engine handling and PDK for sheer enjoyment. No manual in a RS.

I would agree if it had an engine with a racing pedigree like the GT3.

    Re: GT4RS

Depending on one's perspective, Porsche does't currently have a street car engine that's been racing.

The old GT3 engine doesn't meet current emission regulations and has been retired.

The prototype I saw back then I thought it had a GT3 4.0 in it, as I saw the GT3's 9k tech in the cockpit, but now with more information I guess it perhaps isn't and could have been a more tuned up version of the 4.0 in the new 718 GT4.

The much less restrictive air intake track would give it the needed boost in power production over the regular GT4.

Fitting the 4.0 from the Speedster in a detuned state could be an option, but the car would also cost quite a bit more.

Regardless, the achilles heel had always been the gearbox, 2nd gear to be exact, be it the manual version or the PDK in the race car. Gutless would be the correct description of the gearing.

    Re: GT4RS

I have heard already significant issues with manual gearboxes , in former generation, but also already on new gt4.

gearbox exchanges had been already done. Will be Pdk  also a problem ? Can you give your expert answer with more details whoopsy ? Thanks .

    Re: GT4RS

Not an expert, far from it indecision

I haven't driven the new GT4, but the new one is using the same gearbox as the last one, and the 2nd gear is exceptionally long as compared to the rest of the ratios. Lots of corners that can be negotiated in 2nd gear in just about any other cars can't be done in the GT4 with grace, it needs a down shift to 1st to have any power coming back out. It's the same deal in my GT4 Clubsport.

A couple of my racing friends drove and raced the new Clubsport, and said the extra torque in the new engine helps a bit to mask the long gearing but it still needs a shorter 2nd for sure.

I haven't heard of problems with the manual, but I do know the PDK box didn't quite stand up to the rigours of racing though.

This can be a very interesting car.

Let's see if it is presented this year.

I thought the PDK in Clubsport has different ratios than the Manual.  IMO, the manual gearing issue is overblown.  It seems perfect at the Nordschleife and on German roads and autobahnen.  It only seems too tall if you're driving on mountain road with very tight corners (particularly uphill).   The 981 GT4 and the 991.2 GT3 Manual have very similar top speeds in each gear, but the GT3 is at 9,000 rpm while the GT4 was at 7,800 rpm.  The new 718 GT4 has identical gearing as the 981 version, but because the redline is now higher at 8,000 rpm, the speeds in each gear are even 3% higher than before with the same peak torque (limited by engine ECU software to 420NM due to gearbox specification).

It's possible that this torque limitation is removed in the Clubsport (and from the road GT4 when choosing PDK option), as I think only the Audi-sourced Manual has this limitation.  Unrestricted, the torque should be in the neighborhood of 460 NM...

I think this difference may help sell more GT4 with PDK (curious to see the option cost), as they'll be able to show a significant Ring time advantage which otherwise doesn't much exist.

    Re: GT4RS

The Clubsport PDK was just the standard Cayman PDK with 7th gear locked out. So the 2nd gear deficiency on the street car is still present in the race car.

For the race car, the 2nd gear issue is most apparent on slow corner exits, it would hesitate while waiting for the revs to build to get going on the old one. The feedback on the new 718 version is that it's 'better', but still bogs a bit. Dropping to 1st and run it out before shifting to 2nd cures it. So corners are either taken at really high rev on 1st or shift down to 1st on exit then back to 2nd again in order to exit cleanly. In the old car the racers would take those corners in 1st, maybe bang it up agains the limiter for a bit before going to 2nd, that also contribute to the gearbox's troubles.

Pretty much every race track on Earth outside of the Ring will hav at least one corner like this.

    Re: GT4RS

Given the ratios are just for emissions purposes and the Clubsport isn't street legal, a bit surprising they didn't put a different gearset in them.  Would imagine ZF or whoever has the parts on the shelf..

I was under the impression that the gearset from the street PDK (that the Clubsport shares, except 7th) were considerably lower/closer in the lower ratios than the Manual.

I was going to look up the ratio charts in an owners manual online to see how things compare.  Can't find any, and Porsche only has a ton of videos to watch.  Useless.  Is it really too much to ask to publish some simple owners manuals as PDF?? yes

Hmm. What are you talking about?Smiley

Grant and I were discussing the 981 Clubsport, stock and race car both has the 7800rpm redline.

The 718 Clubsport reused the same pdk box.

Yeah, those are pretty tall gears - I would’ve expected lower (nearly as tall as Manual)

The 718 Clubsport kept the same redline, so while the extra torque from the engine is nice, the same deficit remains.

And BoP doesn't help the case either.

    Re: GT4RS

It seems that there are some US based shops offering modified ratios. Porsche / Manthey should offer the same, and this should even be an option when the car is bought. I have driven quite a bit in the 981 GT4 CS, and even that PDK gearing feels numb, specially when you reach 4th. For a racetrack the gearing should not allow the car to exceed 260 km/h.

Dude, not everybody has a team at the track to do the dirty work for them.  CLs are a PITA and you know it.

    Re: GT4RS

Honestly, how many sets of tires one go through on a track day? Unless a puncture occurred, most won't even change tire once.

Even the Michelin slicks can last a day lapping.

If someone is bringing a set of track tires to change over at the track, that means a trailer is involved, not too hard to throw the extra long torque wrench for centre lock onto the trailer. Yes it's true it takes 2 person to change a wheel with centre lock, I am pretty sure someone don't mind sitting inside the car stepping on the brakes to help out.

We can tell you live in a city and go no where in the weeds, Nick.  What a counter provincial/city slicker comment.  Centre locks suck.  Just have a flat in Wyoming.
