Checkpoint 8

I got an email from my dealer today that my 987S should be at checkpoint 8 either today or tomorrow.
Does anyone know what this means?

checkpoint 8 is the final inspection. When its through checkpoint 8 its complete production (CMPPRD). Then it moves to the dock in Emden to go through import paper work and invoiced to ship (IMPINV). Once its on a vessel it switches to "ONVESSEL". Not sure where Colorado cars go, mine is coming into Baltimore. The boats are loaded so the "sold" cars come off first and are shipped off to dealers - timing of the last step depends on your distance from the port.

Any idea when a VIN number is assigned during this process?
My dealer also indicated in his email that it currently had no VIN number.

It should be assigned by now if the car is in final inspection. Supposed to be assigned prior to production completion, but before inspection.

Cars generally (at the plant I work at anyway) have the VIN stamped at the first cell of the final asembly lines. It will be scribed / stamped onto various body panels you will never see. So it will have a vin way before it leaves the factory.

As snoopy implied (by the way: Welcome, snoopy!), the VIN number would be stamped into the body-in-white (that is, before it is paintad).

The dealer should have said HE doesn't have a VIN number for the car yet. The car will surely have one.

Here is exactly what he wrote:

So...i'm assuming that I should have a VIN number here any day now and my car should be on a boat shortly. Damn this has been one long a$$ wait. Hopefully my car won't be a lemon and this wait will be well worth the 25 years since preschool that i've been dreaming about it.

For those of you that have seen the Porsche add on tv with the kid who tells the saleman he'll see him in 20 years. well that was pretty much me.

Are you sure it goes to Emden? It is being produced in Finland. Would it not go directly from there to the US? Or does it go from Finland to Emden then the US?

from what i've learned, they go from finland to rostock (german port on the baltic) and train to emden where they meet up with other porsche's and get on VW Transport vessels to come west. IMPINV status indicates its at emden waiting on the ramp for the next vessel.
