Best way to keep a Carrara White car

While a white Porsche looks great, it is a very hard colour to keep. The plastic fenders tend to discolour and I park my car outdoor... what are some inputs on keeping the car new? I should start putting car covers on the car when parked outside. Also, how often do whtie car owners wax their cars? Any special products that can keep white cars white like special detergent that could keep white shirts white? White cars tend to fade and discolour after a few years and being new, it looks great so an ounce of prevention is worth a lot.

    ????

White is pretty much the easiest color to maintain, and reflects away the most sunlight and UV...

Which is why I'm a bit puzzled. If you're having trouble with discoloration and fading, with a WHITE car, then I run the risk of upsetting you by informing you that you're doing a horrid job of general and basic upkeep, regardless of whether the car sits out or not.

You shouldn't have to wax the car much more than once every 3-4 months. That should be more than adequate. However, your problems MAY be due to your washing. Do you wash yourself? Or do you run it through a car wash? If you are using a harsh detergent on your car, or running it through a harsh wash, you're basically stripping the wax or poly right off the paint prematurely... Your discoloration may also be caused by the products you're using.

Bottom-line, white should be simple. It hides scratches, and reflects/shuns UV and fading. If you're having these types of troubles with white, you'd be pulling your hair out with red or black.

Share with us what you're currently using for wash and wax, how often, etc.. A cover is always a good idea for during the day, if you have to park in an unshaded parking lot for work... But at night, it's really not accomplishing anything beyond protecting the car from the odd cat, or if you're parked under a tree... Other than that, there's nothing going on at night that your finish needs protected from.

Hope you don't take my criticism too badly, but something's amiss here!

I tend to agree with 69bossnine that white paint generally is not an exceptional problem to keep in good condition.

One special situation specifically with white Porsches is that the yellow discoloration of the clear film applied to areas exposed to stone-chipping is more obvious on white cars than on many other colors. I suspect that it might be less "stressful" to pay for this film to be removed and replaced after a few years than to sweat about the best means of maintaining it in as-new condition.

Errr, I beg to differ. Discoloration is more obvious on white paint than on any other colour and, just as dirt and imperfections, they are much more noticable than on any other colour. On top of that, if the paint loses its glossy finish very light and very dark colours are the ones that make it the most obvious.

I agree that, if one regularly waxes and polishes the car, it is less likely to show these effects. On top of that, car paint on all modern cars have an additional clearcoat that should further prevent this.

Re: Best way to keep a Carrara White car

Properly looked after, there should not BE "fading" or "discoloration" of any degree...

To say that white "shows it" more, is to accept a foregone conclusion that the car's going to be allowed to degrade to that point. It's like saying, "my fair skin kid sure shows bruises after I beat him, what can I do about that?"

Or, It's a less-extreme version of saying, "man, 20 years ago I parked my white truck in the back yard under that tree, and today, MAN does all that orange rust show up against that white, and MAN is that white paint chalky!!!"..... "Damned white paint!"

It's not the white paint's fault, the color is irrelevant...

Treat the disease, not the symptom....

If you were to say that white or black cars show dirt more than most other colors I would be inclined to agree, but the question here relates to maintaining the gloss and shade of the white paint, particularly on the painted plastic trim parts. If any color paint loses its gloss, then all bets are off anyway.

You kind of confirm with your second paragraph that, if a paint is well maintained, this problem is less likely to arise. This applies to modern white paints as much as to any other color in my non-expert observation.

In former times, shades of red were reputed to lose their look in a relatively short time when exposed to sunlight, due to the pigments used. I believe paint technology has moved on since then.
