Is Bose good value for money?

Hello rennteamers. I am new around and I am wishing to ask before I order if you think that the Bose sounsystem worths its money as I heard stories about it beeing controversial...

    Is it that good ?
    Please advise me....
    Thanks

Re: IS BOSE GOOD VALUE FOR MONEY ?

    Hi Florent,
I am not a sound system specialist and I know you can get better than Bose after market.
I had the Porsche sounds system in my 996 and the Bose in my 997. The latter is much better, perfect for cruising of in town.

Re: IS BOSE GOOD VALUE FOR MONEY ?

I personally was very disappointed with the Bose in my C2S... agree that aftermarket will be better but stock premium sounds system ok too

Re: IS BOSE GOOD VALUE FOR MONEY ?

surely there are superior aftermarket stuff... but do you want to ruin the look of your dashboard!!! or those perfectly installed speakers!!! having said that, the Bose system is good enough, even a must if you have a convertible... get it with no hesitation... and yes, it is worth the price...

Re: IS BOSE GOOD VALUE FOR MONEY ?

The Bose system in the 911 is not very good for listenting to music. That said, I am not sure that any system would sound great in this car. There are too many external noises that are present in the interior; such as the sound from the engine and the tires.

Never the less, I would buy the Bose system again. Not because I think it is great, but because the alternative is not as good. But at the end of the day, the best sound system in the car is the engine. If I need music, it is when I am droning down the highway for hours on end. The Bose is used, but I am always left disappointed with the sound.

Re: IS BOSE GOOD VALUE FOR MONEY ?

I belive it is a good value. It would cost $5000, to put in a system aftermarket.

Re: IS BOSE GOOD VALUE FOR MONEY ?

Anyone who expects an excellent listening experience in a car like this - especially a cab - is kidding themselves and you. Many of the same people who complain about the Bose system also complain about not having iPod connectivity -- and iPod files compress out 90% of of the information content of a CD (that's how you get a 10:1 compression of the data) -- and seem to not notice the loss of fidelity.

I think the Bose is great. In the four cabs I've now had, it has by far the best listening experience.

Re: IS BOSE GOOD VALUE FOR MONEY ?

    1) The stock system is awful!

    2) A high-end aftermarket system would be wasted in a 911.

    3) The Bose system is acceptable and the best option.

    4) The ultimate sound-system is PSE

Re: IS BOSE GOOD VALUE FOR MONEY ?

BLOSE straight-up sucks, but you know what, it sounds way better than stock.

Do yourself a favor, never turn on the radio and just listen to the engine. Stick it in neutral and rev if you're in traffic

Mine came free on my car, but I would not have paid for it. Probably would have put that money towards PSE or an after-market exhaust.

Re: Is Bose good value for money?

I think the bose system is a very good compromise and is well worth the investment. I have a cab and even at freeway speed it is powerful enough to hear the music well.

Re: Is Bose good value for money?

I think not so much a matter of whether Bose is worth $1400 bucks, but whether the stock stereo is worth saving yourself $1400 bucks. After all, if somebody is such an audiophile that they think the Bose system stinks, then how do you justify ordering your car with a yet-even-STINKIER soundsystem just to save the lousy $1400????

It's kind of like saying "This $2.95 Big Mac tastes like horse meat, so I'll take two .99 cent cheeseburgers please..."

When all of the options aren't so swift, the least you can do is go with the best you can get, assuming the price tag isn't too stupid. And in this case, I think it's an adequate value...

Re: Is Bose good value for money?

Florent - I would suggest that you take a spin in the 997 and determine if the amount of road roar and engine noise is too high to hear a higher quality sound. I ended up buying the Bose system but after spending time in the car, I would not buy it again. Save the money and get the short shifter or full leather.

Re: Is Bose good value for money?

I think all stock/dealer systems are overpriced. But I think it helps with the resale to get the Bose. You might get an extra few bucks on trade.

Re: Is Bose good value for money?

In a cab, the major sound entertainment is the wind, the engine and the road.

Music is an add-on. The key for the music system turns into the ability to here the music over the wind/engine/road noise, which requires lots of speakers, lots of bass, and lots of watts. There should be no expectation of excellent fidelity, since even if the system delivers it, you can't possibly hear it.

IMO, the Bose does this well. I can hear the highs, mids and lows; I can feel the bass (if I want); it does a reasonable job of adjusting for ambient noise levels.

Re: Is Bose good value for money?

I'm an audiophile. I know what excellent, realistic-natural sound reproduction is. Having said that, I think the standard 911 stereo is good enough for a car. Is it the ultimate Hi-Fi? No, but neither is the Bose or anyone else's in a car. Besides... the Bose woofers rob precious storage space in the rear.

P.S. - I am not recommending using the elevated storage space in the rear for anything other than light stuff, like jackets/hats and the like.

Re: Is Bose good value for money?

FYI the Bose sub takes up room in the passanger footwell in ther cab. My passangers haven't noticed.

Re: Is Bose good value for money?

I'd have to agree with John H. I'm not an "audiophile", but I've upgraded the sound system in almost all of my other cars and have a pretty decent set up in the house. The bose was a no-brainer for me...I didn't want to have someone do an aftermarket mod on my new car when the Bose sounds pretty damn good by itself.

$1400 is not a good value for it, but I also don't think there is a better choice out there. Go ahead and get it...I'm sure you'll be happy with it.

Re: Is Bose good value for money?

If its not the biggest PITA project, my next Porsche will have a custom stereo. With the cost of the upgraded BOSE stereo, and if you get the 6 changer CD too, that equals about $2000 worth of another stereo you can have put in. I have the upgraded Bose, dont hate it, rate it a 7, but if you like clear , LOUD , killer sound, this isnt the system through Porsche for you.
I agree for sure, the wind, and Porsche roar hinder the sound already to begin with. Just a little thing we got to deal with..Even my coupe when the sunroof is open makes things loud and decreases the enjoyment of the music.

Re: Is Bose good value for money?

Merci bien to all of you for your valuable help..
I think I shall go for Bose....and PSE

    Good decision.

Re: Is Bose good value for money?

    Second that!

Re: Is Bose good value for money?

$1400 is a lot of money for Bose. Bear in mind that the marginal cost for the speakers is very low, so Porsche and Bose are making tonnes of money from over-paying consumers.

When I want to listen to music, I switch on my home system with Linn components and Acoustic Energy mkII speakers, the system is a bit expensive, but delivers fidelity that cannot be described in a few sentences.

When I want to drive, I'd rather listen to PSE

Re: Is Bose good value for money?

And when you're stuck in traffic, or on an endless expanse of curveless interstate?? Do you sing Itsy-Bitsy-Spider to yourself over and over again?? Or do you resort to turning on the stock stereo, and cringing... LOL!!!

Ya gotta have a halfway decent stereo in any car that's going to serve as more than just a "fun day" car. The PSE sounds great, but it's not that great, and it's the same damn song, hour after hour... For me, it's not a matter of having to listen to the stereo, loud, every time I drive. It's a matter of having it there, in place, waiting for me, on the occassions I'm jonesing to rock-out while driving. The fancy system at home isn't doing you a damn bit of good when you've got a craving to listen to something while your on the move, miles from home.... "Hey, do you have a stick of gum?" "Yeah, at home" "Oh....that does me a ton of good.. "

Ehhhh, it's an endless and answerless debate.. There are certain options that you pay for...not because you'll be using them ALL the time every time you drive... but because you want them in place waiting for you when the notion and the inspiration hits you. It's the same thing as horsepower. I don't drive around all day long with my foot on the wood, shifting at redline.... But when I DO want to have some fun, and make some pace, the power and the handling is there. Bose isn't spectacular, but the alternative is worse, and exhaust noise is only fun on the occassions that I'm really romping..

    LMAO

how do you come up with this stuff??

Re: Is Bose good value for money?

I am the sum result of the Flying Circus from a young age, unabashed beer drinking and hilarious friends to draw inspiration from...

Like the one who worked nightshifts at the hospital, and would spend certain especially bored days calling on random classified ads and leaving messages with my name and return phone #... Imagine coming home at night, and getting a phone call from an elderly farmer..."So, I got your message... you want to buy ALL my goats??", or "Hi, I need to know how you want to pay for and get this potty seat you said you wanted.."

Or the one who takes a bathroom break at an interstate rest area on a busy holiday weekend, and walks back to my car with a totally straight and oblivious face, with 70 running feet of toilet paper trailing behind him eminating from his pants. Same gag worked great at crowded college bars as well...

Or the one who couldn't make my b'day party due to a Costa Rica trip, so he calls to tell me that "I'm gonna have to Vincent Van Gogh your party Rick".... And the morning of the event, I get a rubber ear in the mail..

Or when we were waiting outside a friend's apartment, who was supposed to meet us there, with no key to get in.. And after talking on a cell phone for a few minutes with the absent resident, announces "I've got the key"... "You've got a key?" (walking towards the door) "yeah, I've got the key.." slowly picking up speed, lowering shoulder, and flattening the door..

This could be endless. Suffice it to say, if anybody finds themselves helplessly dull and uninspired... Slap your boring friends, they're your problem...

Re: Is Bose good value for money?

    Now THAT explains everything!

69bossnine: have you considered a career in showbiz? one with your talent can easily host a chat show

Re: Is Bose good value for money?

get it!!!.... its the best option without spending a fortune or ripping apart your interior but you must also get the PSE!

Re: Is Bose good value for money?

I think the Bose is worth the money. I thinks it sound pretty good. Though, I think the bass is over done and the high are lacking. It's by know means the greats factory system and could not hold a stick to a aftermarket system. I would have spent a lot more then $1400 on a aftermarket and had more weight in wiring and sub box. I think for the fact it's a sport car and only $1400 a pretty good deal.

Re: IS BOSE GOOD VALUE FOR MONEY ?

SCOTTY A......Your comments are exactly correct from a audophile point of view. I have discussed on many of these forums that from an sound engineeringpoint of view a car is a crazy place to try to achieve audio imaging. Of center seating, hard glass and metal all over the place. What most people seek in the after market is too loud and far too unrealistic bass. Actually one of the best factory install stereo systems is the Lexus Mark Levinson system. It is pretty realistic. High end audio belongs in the home.
