    Quick update from Manthey, should be ready next week. Car should feel nice and fresh when I get it.

    They are OK but from 2015, therefore we would recommend to change them (Trofeo R)

    There we go, it was finally ready to pick-up today. It was brought straight from Rebellion in Switzerland to Manthey to have the work and setup done, and I hadn't seen it once before today. Buying a car from a distance is always a bit of a gamble, especially those with history on track, but Manthey had already assured me that it was in a very good state. That said, it exceeded my expectations when I saw it IRL, it just looks perfect. The first drive is always special, and in this case very much confirmed this is where I 'belong' in the automotive spectrum. It feels solid as block of granite but delicate at the same time, you need to properly drive it to get the most out of it but it does really deliver if you do. At the same time the purity in the steering, the suspension you hear working, it's things you simply not find in modern cars any longer. You need to drive these older cars to remind us of how it could be. 

    Despite its age however, it does properly get a move on, it feels very strong in the mid range (bit less at the top when used to 991.2 GT3 and 812). Will let it loose on the Nordschleife tomorrow, which might prove interesting without nannies, Trofeo R and a very cold night ahead.

    The design looks very attractive. A successful remake of the very plain 996 body.

    I presume this car will require plenty of skill and nerve to drive fast.

    I like the Momo wheel, very 70s. BTW is it legal to drive on public roads without the steering wheel Airbag, since this car had one originally?

    Apart from the stunning images, I am still in awe with how fresh the 996 RS looks today.
    I was never a fan of the pointy headlights and the all round pointy styling of the mk2 996, and prefer the more rounded look of the mk1 996, but the RS wears it with so much style!
    Obviously, not being a porsche owner I can't comment at all on the driving dynamics, but it even looks much nimbler than the modern , beefed-up 911... I can imagine it feels like a gokart compared to the 992.

    Anyway, enjoy in good health and I'm looking forward to much more photos and your impressions!

    The best thing after collecting this one was to find the condition in which it was presented. I hadn't seen the car before, I had sent Gnil (thanks again) for a brief inspection before committing, but for the rest I was in the dark. To then find that the seller had been beyond correct in presenting the car in the best state possible, and to provide a whole raft of spare parts etc.. is a very nice (and rare) feeling. It looks and feels like new, inside and out. 

    The driving itself is a revelation when coming from modern stuff, it feels so tiny. Especially on the track it seems to give you options you otherwise wouldn't have because you simply have more space to place it. The communication is on another level, the steering feels so uncorrupted (it's almost unassisted), it's a very granular/textured feel. Then the sensation of a very light/tight car on warm and sticky tires is so enjoyable as well, how it skips sideways when you're on the edge of adhesion, it's something to savor. It rewards when driven well, and it can be a dog when driven badly/misunderstood. My first lap on still cold tires and cold tarmac I literally struggled to slow it down for the first corners, triggering ABS on the bumps (it is very stiff) and catastrophic understeer when finally turning in. But then suddenly with some heat in it, it all changes. If you love driving, it's a fantastic feeling. 

    The engine feels very strong in the midrange (remember this one is tuned to 3.9 so a bit different in character), a little bit less so on the top end, certainly comparing to the 9k RPM screamers in the 991.2, so you drive it a bit more on torque instead of wringing its neck. Despite an aftermarket titanium exhaust/headers it is relatively civilized on the outside, on the inside it sounds industrial but with a great intake bark accompanied with it. It feels bulletproof as well, which is reassuring on track. 

    All in all, over the moon with it. Where it comes short compared to modern stuff is in its breadth of abilities. It shines on track but on more mundane duties you struggle a bit more with it than say a 991.2 would. You scrape the front lip everywhere, and it broke my back on the autobahn, but that's the consequence of modifying it to shine on track obv. In its stock form that would be less of an issue. The radio/speakers are a joke as well, but again that's not the focus of this car, I'll happily take that if I get the rest in return.

    That remains to be seen indeed.
    Felt quite fine in Germany on the road, literally bounced out of my seat in Brussels. 🤣

    The combination of low speed and Belgian roads is not its forté.

    Anyway, you can always install the new official PCM for the 996 now! 

    I thought about that but it has a nice original radio, and you don't hear anything coming from the speakers anyway... For nav etc we have our phones, I don't really see the use.
