    Re: Dino Prototype Pictures

This new line will appeal to a lot of people, at $140k, right up with the 911tt and the amv8, it will be a huge seller. Expect demand for the 430 to collapse as it will be seen as a more focused car and less affordable.

If they make it a 2+2 with a retractable roof of some kind, they will sell over 10k a year. I would get one also after passing on the 911tt.

    Re: Dino Prototype Pictures

I would appreciate if the demand for the F430 (successor) would go down because of the Dino.

Let the "I-must-have-a-Ferrari"-customers buy the Dino/California GT and keep the mid-engined model for the real enthusiasts!

Stefan, the implication of building a Dino or whatever they call it is to say there will be a car built by Ferrari under its brand that will be somewhat less than the 430. I believe that is what he is denying.

But the Dino/California GT already exists and pictures of it have already been shown to some customers.

Then Luca is flat out lying. Not good for any CEO.

Well, Luca once said that under his control Ferrari will never build more than 5,000 cars per year.

They did nearly 6,000 in 2006.

Some time ago Ferrari believed that they could grow by increasing Maserati sales and Ferrari merchandising/theme parks etc while keeping the the Ferrari cars very exclusive.

The Maserati plan didn't work out as we know, and personally I'd prefer more Ferrari cars on the streets than more merchandising stuff

    Re: Dino Prototype Pictures

How on earth can Ferrari jump from 5000 cars a year to 15000? I just don't believe that Ferrari has the ability to make a 'mass' production car, even with Maseratis help.

Easily, the Maser factory is underutilized. They've been just waiting for the days to crank things up.

    Re: Dino Prototype Pictures

As much as one may want to see F capture R&D/safety/quality advantages of mass produc, doubt F can successfully sell 10-15K cars/yr w/o signif impact upon global mkt for $150K+ cars.....

Prob majority of US' current 2K/yr F consumption depends upon assumed 100% one-yr resale value.....many US 430 buyers will disappear if 430/Dino are likely to have more P/AMG/L-like trade-in value (i.e., 60-70% MSRP one-yr trade-in value)....

F demand in EU now is fairly lackluster (599/430 is about as easy to obtain as is a CL65/997TT/GSL in US)....greater vols will destabilize an already tenuous EU supply/demand balance...

CA mkt may be heading into a consumer recession, w/declining home prices, rising interest rates....

NYC and London similarly (debt cap mkt issues) face a likely less exuberant, less free-spending financial industry than past 2-3 yrs (when demand for $150K+ cars didn't seem to increase much anyway)....

Will be rather interesting to observe F's coming "stress-test" of global demand for discretionary, $150K+ cars...and impact upon F/P/AMG/L sales vols/pricing/lease terms/trade-in values....also will be intrigued to see how much real demand exists in China/other emerging mkts....and how resilient is the recently more robust German economy in context of slowing US/London economies....

Luca Montezemolo once said "I build maximum 3.500 cars a year and if someone has the opinion I should build one more, I will build one less" - so, kind of impressing how people loose their values if money comes into the game.

On the other hand - out of the economical view, this is the right step to do. They need to go up with their numbers and I think Porsche is the best example that people always spend money for emotions, even when they got weaken up over their years.

A Ferrari was always and will always be a very fast, very adorable looking and emotional Fiat, but still, some parts are not better than in a Cinquecento.

Whatever - this Dino will be the right move and I will probably be the first queing up in getting one!

    cheers, L@rs

    Re: Dino Prototype Pictures

    Maybe second

Serioulsy, the "Dino" would have to deliver in performance/package though. This is where F could dilute the brand by making a sub-par Ferrari.

True. Kind of like the restrictions P had with the Cayman relative to the 911.

Regarding F's strategy moving forward, there's a lot of people with money out there waiting to be spend on something they think they can't easily get. F has been a master at creating this marketing environment. I don't see this changing anytime soon.

In the recent issue of CAR Magazine and Motor Trend, Montezemolo was interviewed and here is what he said

"Future Ferraris, he says, will be safer, more economical, and able to run alternative fuels--though not diesel. And he won't make an SUV "We have no credibility there, we are not Porsche.....And he won't build an entry-level car. "used cars are our entry cars. WE ARE NOT GOING TO DO ANY DINO. NO WAY. OR A SMALL OR CHEAP FERRARI...WHAT DO YOU MEAN SMALL? LESS TECHNOLOGY. LESS INNOVATION....NO,NO,NO.I DON'T KNOW WHY THAT STORY CAME OUT. I DENY IT."

If Ferrari comes out with an entry level car or a Dino, his reputation will be great tarnished. I doubt very much he would do that.

BTW see how careful he is in qualifying the small car reference. I am convinced the 430 replacement will be smaller and possibly lighter.

What if it is not a Ferrari but marketed as a new brand: Enzo, like Maserati?

    Re: Dino video...

Seems the new "Dino" (don't call it a Dino) will not be based on the Maserati, instead it looks like it will be 599 based, and therefore will have an aluminum structure. Makes more sense, I think.

    Re: Dino video...

Yeah, I don't think Ferrari would revert back to using "antiquated" stell rather than utilizing the full resources of Aloca in designing this new "Dino" I do however believe that the technology (electronic) will be limited and it will obviously not come with a V12. For example, don't be surprised it comes mainly with a standard 6spd rather than a F1 box. Also, the mannetino will probably disappear but since the power to weight ratio won't be in the same class as the F430 or F599 it won't need all the fancy adjustable suspension/aero that the 599 and 430 have. Sinc ethe car will be naturally balanced and lightweight it will get by just fine without all these techno wizardry. Remember, the purpose of this new model is to either be a taster sample of true Ferrari blood offered at a somewhat intro price or it will be more of a tourer than racer(according to Winding Road).

From the look and sound of the video posted above, I would say the car is a V8 tuned for more torque rather than one tuned for absolute HP as in the 430.

I think it will need to be as fast as the 430 - I think this will the entry-level 430 replacement even though it's not mid-engined. Similar to the way the 550 replaced the TR.

From the Ferrari petition to the NHTSA, "Ferrari plans to produce F430 models until late 2008; at that point, the F430 will be replaced by a newly-designed 8-cylinder model", this couldn't be clearer.

As for the spiritual mid-engined replacement of the 430, this may be moved upmarket and made more extreme, but still V8, with a turbo for more power(?).

Wow, I like this version with the exception of the front bonnet "slits". I understand the exclusivity factor of Ferrari but if there are so many more global opportunities to sell the brand, why not increase the unit volume? 15k per year does not mean that a Ferrari will be on every street corner.

That sound is awesome. It's how my car sounds. All ferrari's have enjoyable sound, but usually that high pitched, high rpm stressed out sound. This is the first real mean sounding one.

    Re: Dino video...

I doubt they'd put those front slits in that position. Plus the back looks odd with the slits there too. I'd say it'll look more like this possibly with retractable top:
