Would you sell 997 targa 4s to get a panamera 4s/turbo?

I have a beautiful 997 targa 4s 2007 and my wife has a 2009 Q5 3.5 We have two kids 2yr old and a 4 year old. I do not need a car for a daily commute, I take my car out 2-3 times a week, it has 9k miles in 4 years... But when I nee it, it needs to be functional. I was waiting for the new 911 to do the upgrade (+1yr as you all know) But now I am getting a desire to get something comfortable for the whole family, so it would be easy and safe to transport two kids-I drive them in 911 on the backseats with a little seatbelt trick, but it is illegal and hence unsafe So after some thinking panamera 4s or turbo seem like a good choice I kind-of like sedans more than SUVs. Must haves-4x4,350+hp,luxury vehicle to be presentable, good deals on a 1-yr old model, bluetooth Strongly desire-air suspension, sporty drive Desires: maximum passenger space for minimal exterior space Questions: 1. Will I hate myself for trading in my 911? It's a stick and overall a kick-ass car.. 2. Should I get something cheaper and keep the 911? Like a 1-year old E550? 3. Is panamera a balanced car in terms of comfort/sportiness? 4. For panamera - 4s with options like air suspension or a turbo? 5. Is panamera turbo lower than 4s? Does air suspension bring it up down like in range rover? 6. Panamera owners-is it worth it? 7. Panamera backseat-are they too fragile for a booster seat? 8. How rigid are the backs of the seats? Can kids scratch them easy with their feet? 9. Any other alternatives I didn't think of? Any other details I should look for? Thanks a lot in advance for your answers!

Re: Would you sell 997 targa 4s to get a panamera 4s/turbo?

yes keep the 911, you are an enthusiast and you will miss it.

My vote definitely goes to getting a used E550, that will take care of all the above concerns and it is a great sedan by any means. That is what i would do.

You have driven your car very little, yet trading it in at a Porsche dealer will make it a substantial hit on your wallet. That is not fun. In Canada, a E550 can be had for a great price.

    Cheers from the westcoast

atz - thanks ;)  I see prices on 1-yr old E550s fully loaded, 4matic ~ 50k USD on dealer's auctions in the US..   It is also much more versatile for daily driving in Montreal (small parking spots, tight turns)

    Cheers!

Yes, I would probably get a Cayenne Turbo instead the Targa but not the S.

A high power SUV is the perfect family car, the Panamera Turbo could be too if it had a fifth seat and more luggage room.

Re: Would you sell 997 targa 4s to get a panamera 4s/turbo?

I agree with RC--get a Cayenne Turbo (not the Panamera).  You will love the room for the kids, the trunk for all the stuff you are going to need for the kids, and it is fast as hell--probably faster than your Targa.

I have had many Porsches, primarily 911s.  They are wonderful, but not for a family.  I have two kids (age 15 and 9) and my Cayenne TTS is by far the best Porsche I have ever owned for a family.  Fast, comfortable, easy to load and get into/out of--fantastic finish and problem free.

The Panamera is fantastic, but more of a gentleman's car.  You will go nuts telling your kids to keep it clean, don't scratch the seats, etc..

On the Mercedes, check it out carefully.  A very good and trusted friend--a real Merz freak--had so much trouble with her E55 wagon she turned it back in after six months.

Re: Would you sell 997 targa 4s to get a panamera 4s/turbo?

Guys - thanks for your replies!

atz & wonderbar - I never said a wagon... e550 sedan new body style, but after some thinking I came to a conclusion that 3 cars are just too many to own.  And yes - Panamera seems like a car that you would not want your kids to be in :) so ultimately it defeats the purpose.

gotta do some more research on Cayenne.

So you are selling your Targa for a Cayenne

Re: Would you sell 997 targa 4s to get a panamera 4s/turbo?

Atz - probably for the new 911 turbo when it comes out :)  I respect Cayennes, but I am not a big fan of SUVs

I got this fever to change my car as I am sure all of you get once in a while, but I will just have to swallow it - not for financial reasons, but I don't want all the pain of managing +1 car or missing my 911

I will use my wife's car more and walk/take taxis on days like today (2+ feet of snow just landed), kids love the ride in the back of 911... Although it is technically illegal (they need boosters), I find that they're safe there, as safe as they can be in a sports car really.

It is very hard to swallow the desire to update your car :)))

So all the problems are solved by thinking twice - as often :-)

Re: Would you sell 997 targa 4s to get a panamera 4s/turbo?

Selling a Porsche is always tough--I went through nightmares selling my 2001 996 Turbo in 2005, for example.  But a new Porsche almost instantly replaces that feeling, and the "older" car starts to seem obsolete.  That is the way it should be really.  You should expect Porsche to compete and improve.

On the Cayenne.  Test drive one, give it a chance.  You might be surprised.  In many ways you get much more car for the money than with a 997, or even a new 991.  More luxury, more comfort, more convenience, 500HP, more protection for your children in an accident.  Don't  view the decision as giving up sporty driving, because you can move the Cayenne Turbo around as fast if not faster than your 2007.

Incidentally, I have some wonderful friends from Montreal, who now live in France.  Wonder if you knew Antony and Sarah Besso?
