    If the 911 has had 7 generations, does that mean they are splitting the actual 911 (901) model into 2 groups (since there are only 6 numerical groups:  911, 964, 993, 996, 997, and 991)?  Where have they split it?  If it's at 1973 (long hood vs. short hood impact-bumper), I can't think of many who think the 74 is superior than the 73. 

    And there is strong case to be made that the 964 is a lesser car than the 3.2 Carrera as well and MOST Porsche enthusiasts would have a hard time accepting the notion that the 996 is superior to the 993 (just check resale prices).

    Last night watched NatGeo's Ultimate Factories PORSCHE - They also mentioned 7 generations so guess PORSCHE does see it that way...

    That show was from 2009 (before the 991), so that would make 8 generations?  I guess you could break the 901 into 3 groups (65-73, 74-83, and 84-89), as many 911 fans do.  Some make the middle group only include 74-77 narrow body impact bumper years.

    I couldn't take it seriously when I read "the engineers at Zuffenhausen", instead of "the engineers at Weissach". Smiley

    I suspect that the "generations" they had in mind were: 911, 964, 993, 996.1, 996.2, 997.1, 997.2, 991. 
    8 generations equates to 7 improvements, if you agree with each change being an improvement.  Smiley

    1/4 mile for 11.8 secs with the exit speed of 118 mph - great result!

    0-124 mph should be around 13-13,5 secs - very good result for just S model

    It's almost as fast 997.1 Turbo for 0-200 and faster than 996 Turbo !

    Progress is very strong

    At the official presentation for 991in Frankfurt 2011, Porsche announced it as the 7th generation. We all lost memory suddenly?!!

    2. G Model / 1973.

     Ok, so they are splitting the 911 between long-hoods (MY64-73) and short hood impact bumpers (MY74-89).  The years you mention are the dates of introduction (Model Year generally one year later).

    Probably yes.  I had read they had to make the front hood thicker in order to pass the new pedestrian crash regulations.

    Actually, Michael Mauer explained to me that the pedestrian crash test regs had no impact on the hood (because of the absense of hard parts underneath as correctly pointed out above). Therefore no need to make it look like a Renault or Peugeot ... The curvature of the hood has everything to do with the higher waist line, which itself has everything to do with the 20 inch wheels and the desire to flatten the visual appearance of the car. 

    However, you will notice on the sides of the lower edge of the front bumper dark, angular plastic protrusions. These are only there because of pedestrian crash test regs, nothing to do with aero. Don't ask me (or him) why, but at these angles, european regulations require that the car hit the ankle before it hits the knees. Another surprise: according to him, the most stringent regs concern the interior and the minimum radii that need to be respected on every single part.

    Guess it's not important but I remember seeing a TV show about this, wish I could remember what it was but it clearly showed that front end vehicle design was being influenced by Ped crash safety regs.  It's not just hard parts (three full inches of clearance between the underside of the hood and engine/suspension components under the hood) but the entire shape of the front bumper, hood  & windshield.. ..Eventually I'll find it but till then:

    "To comply with the EU requirements, automakers are already adapting the design of their cars’ fronts— ground zero for pedestrian fatalities. Obviously, a smooth, soft front end is the way forward. That's why the styling of many European cars (e.g. Jaguar’s new XK) has already been changed, with higher, more easily deformable hoods. Much can be achieved by attention to details, within a comprehensive testing procedure."

    I would say 6-1 record, because personally I would have rather had a 993 than 996.

     


    Make that 5-2 then, because I don't know anyone who would take a 74 911 over a 73 911 (excluding extremely rare racing-only examples).  73 911S had 190hp, 74 911 had 150hp, weighed much more, looked worse, had much worse throttle response, etc...

    Have you owned a 993 ? I did. The 996 Carrera 2 was a milestone compared to the 993 I owned. I didn't like the design too much and the first 996 I owned wasn't too reliable but performance and handling were finally up to par with the competition.

    I owned a 1996 993 and a brand new 2002 996,  I liked my 993 far more (but liked my original 73S which was my first of 6 Porsches and 73RS replica far more than either - it's the only one I've kept).

    My 73RS replica (granted, highly modified) has been the most rewarding road car to drive that I have ever driven.  It took me years to learn to be able to properly exploit its abilities, but now everything else pales in comparison in terms of driving pleasure.
