    Like idea of Euro mid-engined chassis with 505hp Z06 motor?

    I was thinking that the new Corvette's Z06 motor is pretty incredible, but the chassis has been lacking in steering feel and nimbleness (I haven't driven the Z06 version - which weighs over 40% more than the Ultima and laps the Ring in 7:42.9 on runflat tires)

    Chevy recently announced that they are going to be making the motor for sale as a crate engine for around $15k.

    I thought about this for awhile and decided that the Ultima with new Z06 motor (actually cheaper than alot of the recommended custom small-block Chevy motors) might be an INCRDIBLE package.

    The new Z06 motor, while 427cid or 7.0L, is actually built on a small aluminum block, so it should fit right in.

    Anyone else think this would be a monster with great reliablity and driveability? 505hp (with smog gear - should be more without), 470ft-lbs with a flat torque curve, 7k rpm redline, dry sump, etc.

    That thing would be a monster at the track.
    Ultimas are already shockingly fast, with 505 hp..... .

    Hmmm, I just did a bit more research and saw that the top-spec version already has Chevrolet 6.3 litre V8 with 534bhp and 528ft-lbs torque. I guess the Z06 version would be the "budget" variety with only 505hp and 470ft-lbs (increased somewhat without emissions). Anyways, I'm sure it's much cheaper at $15k and more reliable with cheaper replacement parts (with the same ECU as a car that's built in the thousands of units).

    If you talk to Mick Hyde (founder of Radical) he will tell you that he thinks of Ultimas as streetcars in contrast to his creations as racecars. When I mentioned the Ultima in comparison to the SRs he pointed to their weight (approx 1000kg) which is double! that of an SR. and he specifically compared the engines, I guess the SR8 engine is superlight compared to the chevys used in the Ultima now. and in fact he said, the Ultima doesnt offer more comfort than an SR except for the hood. we then asked him if he was thinking to build a coupe (ie more of a street car), he mentioned he had thought about it and even sketched one without doors and retractable roof, but mentioned the streetcar construction made things so much more difficult, that for the moment he would refrain from doing sthing into that direction.
    I agree with you Grant that the z06 engine in the Ultima would make a lot of sense though..

    I agree with you Grant that the z06 engine in the Ultima would make a lot of sense though..

    I love the Radicals, however, I don't have any room for a truck and trailer at my house, so I have to drive my track car to the track and back home. In the US, the Radical is not legal on the street but the Ultima is. That was the main reason I mentioned it. I think the Radicals look amazing...
