Cracked Windshield - Replacement Cost in U.S.?

Last Friday a car I was passing - an SUV or a minivan - ran over a rock and launched it onto my windshield, leaving 2 gouges and a crack. Thus far, the crack has not expaned much - still less than an American quarter in size and thus not enough of a crack to get insurance to pay for most of it.

Have any American Rennteam members had to replace their windshields and what was the cost?

    Thanks for any info.

Re: Cracked Windshield - Replacement Cost in U.S.?

The cost of the replacement was about $800 and my insurance covered everything but my deductible of $100

Re: Cracked Windshield - Replacement Cost in U.S.?

UK cost was Pounds618. Pounds50 insurance excess.

Re: Cracked Windshield - Replacement Cost in U.S.?

Thanks for the info. My dealer wants about $1,100, which I thought was a bit steep. I'll do some further checking.

If the crack is small, you can have it repaired without replacing the windshield. That will cost about $60ish. I did that on my Lexus after replacing my Boxster windshield for $600 - insurance paid.

Re: Cracked Windshield - Replacement Cost in U.S.?

The whole size of the damage is smaller than a U.S. quarter. From the inside of the car, a small crack is visible. I just heard from a friend that there is a process for filling in the chips and heat treating it. It makes the damage invisible. Do you know the trade name of the product/process?

Thanks for any info you might have.

Had the same thing happen, total job cost $1035 parts and labor. Advice -- don't just take it to any old glass shop. My dealer recommended the shop I used, and they did a great job.

Re: Cracked Windshield - Replacement Cost in U.S.?

$ 1000 dollars approx 5 years ago for Porsche windshield and install

Re: Cracked Windshield - Replacement Cost in U.S.?

Jim48: that's the $60 job I referred to. There are lots of places that do it; call your dealer and ask for a recommendation (if you bring it in, they'll just sub it out and mark it up).

    I went to http://www.safelite.com/

Re: Cracked Windshield - Replacement Cost in U.S.?

    Scotty,

I decided to go with the Safelite outfit for the windshield repair. I have a high deductible ($500 on comprehensive) on my insurance, but the company waives it when I get the repair. I'll see how it works. If it doesn't work out well, I'll go to the dealer and get the windshield replaced. As I intend to keep the car a long time, what matters to me is how it looks and whether the windshield still has enough structural integrity to fend off another hard hit by a rock.

Thanks again to all for your insights and good advice.

Good luck. It looks pretty good on my Lexus; I was surprised. The spot doesn't entirely disappear, but is dramatically reduced. In my case, it is just above the driver's right eye - about as annoying as you could get - and it doesn't bother me too much. And for the small price and only 30 minutes, it's worth a try. In many locations they'll visit you and you don't even have to go to the shop.

Re: Cracked Windshield - Replacement Cost in U.S.?

    Scotty,

The local outfit is coming out on Friday, Aug. 25, to do the work. I'll see how it comes out. I hope it doesn't wreck the tint of the glass too much, but if it's not too noticeable, that's something I'll be able to live with. I'll let you know if it costs me anything. I think my insurance company waives the deductible in total when they do the windshield repair. I'll soon find out.

And if it looks bad, well, I'll just bite the bullet and eventually get a replacement windshield. As I have a very high deductible (my choice), and I don't want them to raise an already very low rate (I'm paying about $500 a year as long as I keep the mileage on the car at about 8,000 per year - which is fine with me, as all is I use it for is pleasure driving), I'll foot the bill myself if I replace the windshield.

Off topic, but I agree with what you said on the phrase you put next to your "location." Ferry Porsche felt the same way after what happened to his father after WW II.

Re: Cracked Windshield - Replacement Cost in U.S.?

I didn't get the windshield repair done today. The kid who would have done it was pretty nervous about doing it. He claimed that it wouldn't look that good and was afraid to ruin the overall looks of the car. He may have been trying to get a bigger sale by pushing a windshield replacement.

The problem is that unless I go to the dealer, I won't get original equipment glass. Instead, I'd get Libby Owens Ford (LOF) or Pittsburg Plate Glass (PPG). I suspect this might eventually impact the resale value, meaning that a discerning buyer would want original equipment.

The repair kid put some "resin" on the cracked spot, something designed to keep out water and dirt. If the crack does not spread further, I'll run the car with it and replace the windshield some time next year.

Re: Cracked Windshield - Replacement Cost in U.S.?

second the advise to use the glass co. recommended buy the p-dealer. all glass co's are not the same. in the for what it's worth dept. it's always possible that in getting the chip repair the entire windshield can crack side to side for no apparent reason, been there... it's your favorite deity's way of telling you to do it right.

Re: Cracked Windshield - Replacement Cost in U.S.?

I've decided to "bite the bullet and am taking the car in to the dealer on Thursday for a replacement. It's not cheap, running about $1,050, but the windshield will be original factory equipment, and the outfit that does the installation - done at the dealer's repair shop - has a very good record.

Also, I've got to leave the car there until Saturday as the installer said it must sit for about one day before driving to assure a good seal. As the dealer is a long way away, I'm not going to pick it up until next Tuesday, the next time I have a chance to get there.
