I dreamt of owning a Ferrari when I was a teenager, I have been extremely fortunate to fulfill that dream on several occasions (599, Scuderia and California) but like Marcus wrote, the one thing I look for in a sports car is feedback and precision: Porsche, no substitute.

The 599 was too big and too heavy, the Scuderia, quick but awful steering and zero feedback. Turbo S and GT3 have both licked.

I co-own the Calif so I have kept it and it is a wonderful GT car.

    Re: GT3 RS 4.0

I always wanrted to have a Ferrari too and am glad that I owned an F550 Maranello briefly (with my Dad).  But, I also thought the steering was terrible (probably worse than Scud) and no substitute for a proper Porsche.

Getting off topic sorry but it's funny you say that Grant, the Ferraris I'd buy now are old one actually.

Namely, I love the 550 Maranello with manual gearbox, an honest front V12 transaxle great GT!

Or of course my dreamcar, 250 GT SWB. Dream on...

I don't like the design of modern ferraris and yes indeed, that feedback issue is just a dealbreaker for me.

I like the old ones best too.  I was lucky to drive a 1971 365GTB/4 Daytona with only 12k miles and it was really fun (manual steering had more feel, but heavy at slow speeds).

One of my dream Ferraris is a 275GTB/4 with Aluminum body (sat in one here in town recently, but didn't drive it)

Finally some people that I can agree with :D Except I loved the Scud a lot despite minor imperfections. Current Ferrari design direction is not to my like at all.

I am no expert, just someone lucky enough to have driven both and I have my own preferences. To each his own.

The Scud is a good car with actuallty a very quick steering, but to me, too light.

I also happen to be truly passionate about Porsche, so I am very biased.

Most of the pics I posted were taken on the Hoctor pass in Austria between Lienz and Kaprun.

If you PM me, I can send you our whole itinerary, but bear in mind, part of the pleasure is to draft the roadbook yourself, the Alps are just one big playground for petrolheads like us.

Speed limits: Depends on the country. But the beauty of mountain passes is that you don't need to be driving at 200 to enjoy the roads, actually, you can't drive at 200.

The issue is more negotiating the Dutch on vacation with their caravans (why is it that 90% of caravans are from Holland!!!) and watch out on motorways and large roads for speed limits, especially in Switzerland where they don't f... around.

    Re: GT3 RS 4.0

I have my Mac set-up with a roliing screensaver and wallpaper with all GT3RS's which will have to appease me until the 991 GTxRS is out for me to PTS/Euro Delivery.

    OK, I'll bite Smiley
Let me reassure you, I have never been on holidays with a caravan. Even in the Netherlands they are being talked about a bit in a derogatory way.
It surprises me that you saw so many caravans in Switzerland though, most people with caravans tend to go to France for holidays. Also, pulling a caravan up the Furka seems like pure madness to me!

Furka was ok, and it is very wide so you can overtake.

I thought you only encountered dutch caravans only in France, but to my great dismay, we crossed plenty along our alpine tour and a majority of them have a tendency in driving in the middle of the road, great!

    I swear I'm not lying!!!

We encountered couple of hundred of caravans, I'd say 75% dutch, 20% Swiss, 5% the rest.

The Dutch are by far the slowest and worse drivers (caravans). Sorry, just my experience.

    Re: GT3 RS 4.0

Fully agree about the Dutch and the caravans (and I'm Dutch myself), but I normally don't see them on the passes here in Switzerland. But, on the other hand, I don't drive the passes during holiday traffic, maybe that was the reason?

It could well be. The roads were very busy around Chamonix France, less so in Switzerland but still busy, ok in Italy and then great traffic in Austria.

if you see Caravans up the Furka in Switzerland it can only be Gypsies or Roms with alot of St...n jewellery Smiley otherwise must be some guys going for broken brake as they going down the furka. Smiley

The world was ever thus.  I can remember 30 years ago that the situation was the same.

Another unnerving habit at the time was for (NL) marked caravans to pull out to pass an LKW going 80 kph on the autobahn while I was overtaking in the left lane at closer to 200 kph!

It resembles driving down a residential street at 120 kph when any of the parked cars can jump into your path without notice.

    Too exciting Smiley
