    2014 J.D. Power U.S Initial Quality Study Results

    J.D. Power released the results of it's 2014 Initial Quality yesterday.  For the second year in a row Porsche topped the rankings.  The 911, Boxster and Panamera received top awards in their individual classes and the Porsche assembly plant in Leipzig received a gold award.

    The 2014 U.S. Initial Quality Study is based on responses from more than 86,000 purchasers and lessees of new 2014 model-year vehicles surveyed after 90 days of ownership. The study is based on a 233-question battery designed to provide manufacturers with information to facilitate the identification of problems and drive product improvement. The study was fielded between February and May 2014. 

    For a second consecutive year, Porsche ranks highest in initial quality among all nameplates, with a score of 74 PP100. Following Porsche in the rankings are Jaguar (87 PP100), Lexus (92 PP100) and Hyundai (94 PP100).

    Are problems weighted according to their seriousness in order to arrive at this ranking?

    A blown engine or a gearbox replacement are not the same as a broken radio/CD or a wrong fuel gauge for example.

    I don't believe there is a weighting according to seriousness.  They do have a customer loyalty score as well, an indication of whether or not the owner is likely to buy that brand again, and there is a high positive correlation to the Initial Quality ranking.  If there were significant issues with the seriousness of the problems I think it would skew the loyalty score.  There is a lot of information about the data collection on their website if you want to research this further.

    From USA Today:

    J.D. Power and Associates says that the Porsche brand easily led its 2014 Initial Quality Study, although Power noted that the overall number of problems in all cars was increasing as more complex new technologies are introduced.

    The survey, which ranks brands and individual models for fewest problems per 100 vehicles in the first 90 days of ownership, is the auto industry's top measure of new-car build quality, as well as in meeting buyer expectations.

    "The acid test is customer satisfaction," said Matthias Müller, chairman of Porsche's executive board. "We are delighted we can meet the high quality demands of Porsche drivers. For us, the ratings are both a demonstration as well as an incentive to continue along our path to quality growth."

    Even the GT3 engine recall and debacle is "nothing" compared to many other brands.

    The surprises in the survey results are, I suppose, the degree to which Jaguar has improved in recent years and the huge distance by which FIAT trails the rest of the field.  It looks like Jaguar should loan some of its quality management staff to sister-company Land Rover to bring the latter's systems and attitudes up to speed. I hate to think what it would take to improve FIAT.

    When I was in college, many decades ago, the FIAT joke was that it stood for "Fix It Again Tony".  I guess some things never change. 

    Yes, very welcome news about Jaguar, and indeed curious why Tata can't do the same for Rover.  I'm not at all surprised to see Jeep near the bottom, a location it is very familiar with.

    Even the GT3 engine recall and debacle is "nothing" compared to many other brands. 

    Well, the GT3 recall is 1 problem per vehicle for not so many vehicles. Without that, it would have maybe been 73 defects per 100 vehicles, if it budged at all. Frankly, it's way too high for all manufacturers. Essentially, according to this data, your expectations of ever buying a car without something wrong with it is pretty slim, at best around 26%, at worst, you should just hope the defects you are buying aren't too serious.

    Apparently, 'midsize' doesn't mean what it used to.
