    WARNING: CHECK OIL LEVEL FREQUENTLY!!!!!

My Carrera S, has just got to the 1000miles mark, and have never checked the oil level till this morning. used the electronic gauge before start up and with engine cold. Was shocked when it showed the level was down to its lowest area! it was flashing so must mean the oil was very low, have added 1 ltr of Mobil 1 and will check it later when engine cools. So just a warning to everyone to check levels at least every 100 miles! ps, anyone know how many ltrs of oil are needed to fill up the car????

Re: WARNING: CHECK OIL LEVEL FREQUENTLY!!!!!

Meant to say check every 500 miles ,not 100 miles!!!

Re: WARNING: CHECK OIL LEVEL FREQUENTLY!!!!!

8 liters in a Carrera S without changing oil filter
8.5 liters with the filter. Look at the thread p.2

Re: WARNING: CHECK OIL LEVEL FREQUENTLY!!!!!

    wrong.

first of all the system will not measure oil level when its cold.the computer will ask you to check level only when engine is cold.how could your car measure it?mine doesn't.

Re: WARNING: CHECK OIL LEVEL FREQUENTLY!!!!!

to measure oil level, i just turn the key, but without starting the car, then the oil level meter comes up automatically, you can ignore it or let it check your oil level, it only takes 10 seconds.maybe i am doing something wrong, but i thought you only get a true reading when the oil is cold???

its the other way around.oil measurment must be done only at warm engine.check the owners manual.

Wrong. Grant is correct. There are two ways to check the oil - cold, or hot. Just not in between.

Grant, I had to put some in after about 1000, and then again after about 3000. In both cases about 2/3 of a bottle. It is, I understand, pretty normal to need to replace oil early on.

maybe we don't have the same machine...

Re: WARNING: CHECK OIL LEVEL FREQUENTLY!!!!!

    From my owners manuall
f It is best to measure the engine oil level before
embarking on a journey (if the vehicle has not
been driven for an extended period) or with the
engine at operating temperature. Shorter waiting
times are achieved in this way.

Here is what the manual says (cold or hot):

    Oil return time
Before the oil level is measured, the engine oil has
to have flowed back into the oil pan.
The time taken for the engine oil to flow back depends
on the engine temperature and how long
    the engine has been stopped.
This waiting time is counted down in the on-board
computer display when the ignition is switched on.
The oil level display segments start to "cycle".

I agree, I have always checked prior to start up. Used complete bottle for first 1500 miles, funny enough checked oil only today and found I need about 3/4 bottle, but couldn't find oil (bank holiday), I'm on 2,300 miles.
Probably best to stock some oil. I know oil usage is normal for the 997 but still seems weird to me to have to check and top up regularly on such a modern and well engineered car.

Re: WARNING: CHECK OIL LEVEL FREQUENTLY!!!!!

don't you just crawl under and check for RMS leaks before starting out <g>

No oil leaks in my garage

Re: WARNING: CHECK OIL LEVEL FREQUENTLY!!!!!

I have experimented checking the oil with the car cold and hot. In both instances it measures the same. I make it a point of checking the oil after I fill the car with gas.

After each fill up I record the gas consumption, reset the computer and check the oil. I have been doing this for years. It works for me. The time it takes to fill the car with gas, the oil measurement system is ready.

    FWIW

I was down 1 bar after 1000km. Between 1000km and 2000km, the car has used zero oil and is still showing down 1 bar.

Re: WARNING: CHECK OIL LEVEL FREQUENTLY!!!!!

The head mechanic at my dealer said they always top up so as to leave the top bar empty when cold. This gives room for expansion of the oil when the engine is hot.
