Now that is a butt-ugly thing. And I can't see any resemblance with the Panamera apart from the opening behind the front wheels either.

Re: Hmmm...Did Porsche Borrow The Panamera Design From Bugatti?

I had the same idea when I saw the Panamera a while ago. Don't forget that Volkswagen is owned by Porsche, so maybe this is one of the possible influences. Smiley

To be serious: I just think that Porsche wanted to create something special, something out of the ordinary. The Panamera look surely is something special and it leaves enough room for criticism but also for praise.

I'm not sure I would have created the Panamera design the same way Porsche did but what the heck, I'm neither a design pro nor a marketing guy. So I suppose Porsche knows very well what they've done, especially since there have been various customer "audits" and presentations to make sure that the Panamera hits the taste of customers, especially in the US.

I like the Panamera but it isn't what I expected and it isn't the type of car I would dream about, even if I would dream about a limousine.

The Panamera Turbo could be our next family car if Porsche doesn't get too greedy but unfortunately I think that paying 140000 EUR for a well equipped Panamera Turbo would be completely out of my league.

My 997 Turbo lease runs out in three years and then I have to make the decision if I continue on the 911 Turbo path or if I go for ONE Porsche for all purposes only, which could be the Panamera Turbo with Powerkit.

I still don't like the idea of a limousine in my garage as the solely Porsche but money is an issue for me, so I won't have a choice I'm afraid.

Unless Porsche wants to advertise  the Panamera by providing a car for me for free. Smiley

    Re: D1

I think it also has a strong resemblance to another sibling of the VW group- the Phaeton concept car.

That was a real unique and beautiful design. Too bad they weren't brave enough and slapped that uninspiring and bland rear on the production car.

To be honest even after 10 years I would still prefer the D1 over the Panamera- design wise.

    Re: D1

The third side glass of the D1, behind the rear doors, makes it look very utilitarian. The Panamera profile is more unique and classy and more suitable for an expensive car IMO.

However, these pictures of Bugatti and the D1 are a proof that nothing gets thrown away in the VW konzern, because it could be put to some use in the future!

    Re: D1

It seems ugly is in. It has been for some time now. Elegance in car design has been out for some time now, unfortunately.

    Re: D1

The Bugatti looks pretty good to my eye. The problem with the Panamera is the incongruity between the roofline and the line of the glass house in the rear quarter panel area. The Bugatti works because the rear door glass ends with a large radius, and points straight to the back of the car. This sets an expectation for the classic bulbous lines of the rear of the car.

In contrast, the Panamera's rear quarter glass is pinched upwards, which results in the flatter, more modern upper edge for the glass house towards the rear. This sets up an expectation for a flatter fastback rear end. Instead, the eye is assaulted by the more bulbous, higher roofline (probably dictated by the needs of rear headroom...)

     That's how I see it.

    Re: D1

Yep. It's a more modern version of the older Passat rear quarter window.

    Re: D1

The phaeton concept is nice, but not special.

    Here are some nice concepts, maybe someone will build one of these. The last two, a coupe might make up for the mistake that is the panamera;

    Re: D1

wow, those concept pics are very enticing. If Porsche held more true to them, I think there would be little controversy

Thanks for reminding me of the Phaeton concept, I almost forgot about it. Very good example!

The coupe looks pretty dam nice. Let's hope RC is right and that there is a coupe version in the future of the Panmera.
