I'm not sure whether there is a warning light that goes off if you get too low on coolant?
There seems to be no dedicated warning light, but the central warning light (the light labeled with the exclamation mark) should light up red and you should get a warning message displayed in the instrument cluster's display.
I'll have to wait a while for my 997, so i don't know for sure what the situation is, but the 996 has a warning light in the water temp gauge segment.
Ok, I just checked the manual. You are right

the 997 has a warning light in the temp gauge segment, too. Normally this lights up if coolant is overheating, but if it is blinking the meaning is insufficient coolant. Additionally, a warning message is displayed in the instrument cluster's onboard computer display.
