I doubt the wing will look very different than the one on the 991.2. It’s not in Porsche’ DNA.

Is this just an educated guess or you've heard something?  I wonder whether ITB's will be added to all the GT3 variants or only some.  Maybe combo of 4.0, 4.2, and ITB's different on different models?  Would be easier to just supply 4.2 ITB across the board with different tuning levels (as is done now), but maybe there are marketing and/or cost reasons to offer different combinations of the above.  If forced to choose, I think I'd want ITB's over the 5% displacement bump...

Porsche has a history of not surprising  too much . Very gently evolutions .

    I would bet for 992.1 GT3 having the 4.0 , with ITB , the 992.1 GT3 RS 4.2 with ITB and then 992.2 GT3 4.2 and 992.2 GT3 RS 4.2 + mild hybrid

    Educated guess.

I think the 992 GT3 engines will have ITBs regardless of potential displacement changes.

I anticipate that the 992.1 GT3 will receive what amounts to a Speedster / 991.2 GT3 RS engine - 4.0L w/ ITBs.  This engine already exists and has been used in two applications already.  The GT3 is pretty well baked I’d imagine; it should debut in 8 months at Geneva.

The 4.2 liter engine (presumably w/ ITBs; will certainly have particulate filter) will be an excellent way of differentiating the GT3 RS from the regular GT3.  The RS will probably trail the GT3 launch by a year.  That will give them more time to test a street application of a 4.2L engine (and lots and lots of race miles too).

Then for the facelift the GT3 will get the outgoing RS engine and the RS will need something additional (hybrid?) to justify its position; if that progression is accurate, I think many people will buy each car successively, as they did in the 991 generation.

Yes, the last batch of .2 RS for Europe has ITB’s and particle filters.  Probably more accurate to call this 991.3 RS...

    Re: 992 GT3 Touring...

I think Guest  engine generational summary is probably on the money.

There was some live footage of one of the NY Speedster reveals/press events which was commentated by one of APs team where they stated that the speedster engine was a debut for the next GT3 engine. Im not sure if the clip is still up but it was on Youtube when teh car was launched.

I agree the 992.1 GT3 is pretty much baked in now. Any changes we see are likely suspension setting and ECU tweaks. I understand they are about to start cold and hot climate evaluation once testing is completed at the Ring so Im guessing we will see more spy shots out in the real world soon. My money is on 4.0L ITB - I think the last of the 991.2 GT3RS in Europe pretty much lays everything out in terms of what we will see in the 992 GT3. Thats fine by me. After living through the 991.1 GT3engine debacle Im happy fpr someone else to prototype the road variant 4.2 LOL!

    Re: 992 GT3 Touring...

    ^ Agreed on above points

I should have clarified that the final iteration of the 991.2 RS in certain markets has ITB and PF...

Finally, to emphasize the point further, how do you get people to trade up from the 992.1 GT3 or RS to the 992.2 GT3? A displacement bump (just like in the 997 and 991 generations) is an excellent way to spur demand, especially when the high-revving naturally aspirated engine becomes more and more a part of the unique selling proposition for the family of cars.

I wonder what redline the new race car will have?  And what about the road car(s) at a presumed 4.2L?

    Re: 992 GT3 Touring...

    Guest:

I wonder what redline the new race car will have?  And what about the road car(s) at a presumed 4.2L?

Since the displacement to 4.2L was gained from bore (unlike 4.0 which is a Stroked 3.8L), there is no change in piston speed at same revs.  2.5mm additional bore does result in slightly heavier pistons (unless some new lightening technology), but shouldn’t mean lower revs.  If there were still some revs left on the table on the 4.0, we could even see small increases...

I think we shouldn't forget about the euro emission standards.

Porsche is expecting the Euro 7 by 1.1.2023 (the EU wants it by 1.1.2021!) and I doubt that they will meet the standards with a pure N/A engine.

I assume that the 992.1 GT3 will be presented in March 2020 and the RS a year later, in 2021.

The GT3 cycle is usually only 2 years, so either the 992.2 GT3 will be produced for only 1 year or it will be hybrid in order to comply with the Euro 7 rules.

To which (of the many speculations Smiley) are you referring?  If it's the fact that recently built 991.2 GT3 RS are coming with ITB's and OPF, member DaveGordon has an inbound car with this written on the paperwork from Porsche (and car to arrive shortly, we hope).

The specification for the latest build has also caused a change on the Porsche.com website where peak power is now made at 8,400 rpm (was 8,250 before) and peak torque has moved to 6,250 rpm (from 6,000) due to the ITB' and OPF:

Exactly! Our time with a pure NA engine is running out. the dealine has been more or less cast in stone. Expect future 992 variants to start using that space that was created in the 8 speed PDK transmissions for electrical ssistance. Expect weight to increase accordingly and manual transmission to dissapear all together. Luckily not for 992.1 GT3/RS however :-)

Euro 7 is the big issue here but it doesn't stop with Euro 7.

Mild hybrids will be standard in the sports car world.

Lamborghini is already planning with V10 and V12 hybrids (next Huracan and Aventador generation), thank god they abandoned the Biturbo V8 for the next gen Huracan. For now. This is very likely bad news for those who wanted a "960" from Porsche. If Lamborghini keeps the V10 in the next gen Huracan, it is very unlikely that Porsche will put a 960 on the market. You never know though, I heard that a V8 Biturbo would fit the platform as well.

Question with hybrids is: how much more weight will hybrid technology add?

Hopefully they will allow that future batteries, with less weight and more capacity can be retrofitted.

Mild hybrids don't really add too much weight, it is manageable in development.

    Re: 992 GT3 Touring...

I think Porsche have already decided on their 911 hybrid solution. An inline transmission "multiplier" for which according to the reports they have already made future room for within the architecture of their 8 speed PDK gearbox housing. Add to this a power supply and a generation system and job more or less done (in simplistic terms). I suspect they chose this as the lightest weight penalty solution for the biggest return per KG whilst meeting predicted future E7 requirements without massive penalties.....

    Re: 992 GT3 Touring...

992-Gen Porsche 911 GT3 Will be Naturally Aspirated, Get an Optional Manual Gearbox: Report‎

Flying in the face of multiple previous reportsthat Porsche's next 911 GT3 would go turbo, 911 boss August Achleitner says the 992-based track variant will stick with the beloved recipe of rear-wheel drive and a naturally aspirated flat-six that revs to at least 9,000 rpm. Thank God.

Speaking to Australia's Wheels at the recentCarrera S launch, Achleitner says the 992 GT3 will use essentially the same 4.0-liter engine found in the current car albeit revised to make 523 horsepower, just 3 more than the current GT3 RS's 520.

The slight power boost may come in the form of an equally slight growth in displacement. "It could get a small increase," said Achleitner.

While the current GT3's 3,996-cc engine rounds up to 4.0 liters on the brochure, don't expect any displacement increases to budge that headline capacity figure. The report points to the GT3 R race car's 4,000-cc, 549-horsepower motor as a likely candidate with Achleitner then confirming that the engine in the upcoming GT3 RS would be "closely linked" to the racing mill. This would make it, by a slight margin, the biggest production 911 engine to date.

The report goes on to say that the next GT3 and GT3 RS will use an evolution of the 991.2's seven-speed PDK rather than a version of the new Carrera's heavy eight-speed auto. For those who prefer to shift manually, a stick and clutch pedal will continue to be offered on the GT3.

The track-ready 992 will feature less weight and racier aerodynamics including carbon bits and a magnesium roof but that stuff was always kind of a given, no?

What is new are the two 7.0-inch screens flanking the 992's center tachometer. The GT3 versions will apparently use 'em to display track-related info inspired by superbike technology.

"Now we have the possibility with the software…especially in the dashboard," said Achleitner. "One can imagine we could start something special for race tracks…like you already can see on motorbikes."
