    Difficult shift from neutral to first...

    Difficult shift from neutral to first...
    Hi all.

    My problem is that my car will sometimes be very resistant
    to shifting into first from neutral. It will even bedifficult to
    shift into second too, but if I shift into third, I can then shift
    into first as I want.
    I have heard of various transmission gremlins being fixed,
    after long periods of dealer denial, by lubricating some
    transmission shaft. Is that my problem, or do I have syncro
    problems?

    Does it happen only when the car is cold? Or is it not related to the temperature of the car?

    hi and thanks. I don't think it's related to temperature...
    The Porsche race shop I asked, said it was either a
    slightly sticking clutch or syncro damage...

    Sounds like a well know gearbox problem on the 996 Turbo. The only problem I ever had on my former 996 Turbo was the gearbox, changing gears from 1st into 2nd was pretty difficult and sometimes the gear even popped out in sharp turns.
    Porsche was very generous and they exchanged my gearbox twice. Maybe you should talk to your dealer and/or PCNA.

    for me it was always the cold...

    oh man those -10*C days, starting up the boxster, the gearbox was stiffer than a frozen vat of mollasses.

    Are you stopped when you shift into 1st or are you moving?

    Sounds like a syncro to me.

    Yea, I've heard about these issues a couple of times. Many 996s and 986s seem to suffer from this problem. But a lot of them even at temperatures around just 0 C*.

    Luckily my 996 doesn't have this problem. But it really seems to be a pretty common issue.

    it may just be 996 life. many of my gt2's and 3's required going into 2nd before going to 1st at red lights... you need to "clear the box" by shifting into 2nd, first, then first.

    maybe your problem is more, but i've been living with it for many cars. how many miles you have? it eases a bit, but get in the habit of double clutch down shifting into first and you won't have the problem so often.

    Hey watt,

    Living in Malibu, you are really not qualified to express an opinion on a problem that arises at 0 deg. C = 32 deg. F.!

    Speaking as someone who lives in a colder climate, I'd guess it was caused by the clutch not fully disengaging, maybe due to air in the hydraulic circuit. (Assuming, of course, that the driver has fully depressed the clutch pedal when the problem arises!).

    I had the same problem. The shift wire was broken. Under the middle tunnel, the shift wire has a blocking bracklet. This one was broken. Bad on it, this part is plastic and its not only possible to replace this 1 cent part, you need to install a complete new shift wire (was guarantee by myone). 2 hours installation, 250 Euro material.
