Re: Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT (2014 model) - Short Review

Interesting fact regarding the Jeep Uconnect system: It runs on the QNX operation system. This is interesting because Apple's new CarPlay runs on a QNX platform too, so maybe Chrysler will implement CarPlay into the Uconnect system, maybe even with a simple software update.

If you are interested in details, please check out this very interesting article (tested car is a 5.7 l HEMI Grand Cherokee, not the SRT but the Uconnect system is the same):

Funny - same here, when I start the 991 the SRT alarm went off once. Also - i started the SRT on a parking lot and the alarm on two cars around me went off ... Haha

Seems to be a common problem. I read other owners complaint about it but mainly in Germany. Weird. It seems to go off when buses/trucks drive by or...a Porsche. Smiley Maybe Chrysler doesn't like Porsche? Smiley Smiley

Latest performance figure (using the SRT's performance app) after now 2100 km (achieved at 12°C, fuel tank half full, co-passenger):

0-100 kph in 4.4 seconds (0-60 mph in 4.1 seconds)

    Quartermile in 12.8 seconds

Quite impressive for such a heavy truck.

Car has only three mods: Cat back sport exhaust, K&N drop in air filter and 100 octane (95 octane US) fuel and throttle response "optimization" (Trinity custom tune done by dealer).

Dealer claims that it will get even better after 5000 km. Can't wait.

SRT Performance App shows 375 kW maximum power, which equals 510 hp.

This are amazing numbers! Didnt do a 0-100 since long... time to do it again.

I can feel that the car goes better since it has some more miles on it (currently around 3000km).

Jeep That Crushed Anton Yelchin Had Been Recalled

RC, is your GC part of this recall? I don't recall you mentioning this, but it sounds pretty weird the way they designed this shifter.

I have the latest engine and gearbox software for my car, according to my dealer, this already includes the fix.

Also, I cannot remember exiting the car with the engine running and not putting it in P (parking). I guess this is already an automatic habit.

I read about this incident yesterday but today they said he didn't have the recall fix applied.

I feel so sorry for him and his family, such a tragic and very unnecessary death.

    Yes, very tragic and terrible.

I'm not going to read that link again, but from memory I thought it said that (a) FIAT Chrysler has not yet come up with a fix for that problem, and (b) the basic problem is the fact that the shift lever always returns to the default central position after selecting a transmission setting, so the driver has to look directly at the shift position display to ensure that he really has selected "P".
That is, he cannot rely on just quickly looking at or feeling the shift lever's position to ensure that the parking brake really is engaged.
If that is the case, I don't know if there can be an easy software fix.   Smiley

Hmmmm, well, that's not good, but, I think you may be correct. Certainly about the shift lever, maybe about the no fix, it did say something about using the parking brake.

I have now re-read the article, and it does clearly say that "the company has not yet come up with a remedy" for the safety issue.

There is no real remedy but when you leave the car in gear and open the door, there is a sound now.

Re: Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT (2014 model) - Short Review

Right, it does seem like the only "fix" would be to replace the shift lever with a more normal one.

Re: Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT (2014 model) - Short Review

They could just avoid this issue by having the car automatically put the car in park if the door opens for the first time or goes through a close/open cycle. If the person needs it in neutral or reverse or something like that, then they can just move the lever again. The need to keep a car in anything other than park while the driver's door is open is a very rare occurrence for most people. I can't think of the last time I needed to do it, and if I did, it would be a minor inconvenience to change it again.

    Problem solved.

For that to be possible with just a software change, a servo system capable of "automatically" shifting the lever to park when the given conditions prevail has to have been fitted to the car.
As far as I have been able to make out from the little information in this thread that does not appear to be the case, which is why FIAT Chrysler has not yet been able to come up with a fix.

I sometimes wonder if test engineers actually drive these cars under normal driving conditions because this is stuff they should notice during development. yes

There are some issues which professional test engineers are "immune" to, simply because they are too professional.

To try to make a product "foolproof", you have subject it to abuse by as many people as possible who are insufficiently informed about the right way of doing things and therefore more inclined to try all the wrong ways first.

This is why it is a good idea for a car manufacturer to let "ordinary" people test their products before they make it to final series production. Letting family members of employees do the job isn't enough...

You guys missed the most obvious reason for how Jeep engineers and product testers could have overlooked this kind of peculiar issue.

Fly to Toledo, Ohio to where the Jeep brand headquarters is.

    See any hills?

The entire area is as flat as a pancake. You would really have to look hard for a home or a commercial building with even a lightly steeped driveway or parking lot.

I assumed this was just a bunch of switches or something like in the "manual mode" of automatics/DSGs where you just kind of move the shifter in one direction and it's just like a switch that tell's the computer what to do. I assumed the actual physical moving of the shifter and the mere presence of the shifter was aesthetics and comfort.

When you consider that there are only like 20 official complaints registered with the NHTSA or whatever body records these things, and that they probably sold like 100-200 thousands, it's very possible still that no one would detect it even with a large public test. And remember, the people experiencing it aren't probably experiencing it often. So it occurs 1 out of every 20 million gear changes or something crazy like that. You could probably give these to 1000 people and none would have this issue ever, and that if one person did have it, you could chalk it up to just making a mistake. That guy who died probably moved that level hundreds, if not thousands of times before this happened.

Only when you get 200K cars out there being used daily and getting millions of gear changes do these thing become apparent.
