Here's a pic from Friday on Piuma Road looking down my canyon with Palos Verde and Catalina Island across the bay. There's a little white spot left of center in the creek so you can tell roughly where these guys are swimming. I've cut 6 miles of private trails up this canyon and connecting with old roads we have 20 miles of hiking... but we only use 3 or less miles now due to aged dogs....
A comment on fire: the brush is very short here from the 2007 fire, and in 1993 we had a world class wild fire that burned down 450 homes mostly just over the skyline here closer to the ocean, and three of my neighbours died inlcuding two who lived in a trailer in the center right of this pic. I saved my house in both fires [Watt 2, fires Nil], but the flames in 1993 were 100 feet above my roof, so the livin' ain't always easy

Malibu can be beautiful on Christmas morning with Santa Monica, Palos Verdes, and Catlaina Island {left to right]
But New Zealand is gorgeous too, and I'm sorry to say much more free than the USA now [ no politics please but you asked why] . You can start a business in an afternoon!. The South Island is as big as England with 1 million people, delightfully empty] We'll go try it out for a few months in 2014. Maybe Sun will be able to do a run in NZ!!! I'm already shopping for 991's and 599's...... The Ferrari Club has been especially hospitable on our visits and you might note my Porsche Club New Zealand sticker on my 991 in a prior photo!!! The guys down there are very car sick just like us!!! In any case, we need a new adventure having lived in Malibu for 25 years....
BTW, For Porkers sake in the picture you can see the "table cloth" of fog [as they call it in Cape Town] on the South Island [Marlborough Sounds]!!!

That's not really correct; we'll be roughly 8 months Malibu, 4 months NZ mostly in Malibu summer when it's too damn hot. We'll wander around Asia also. Malibu in the winter [these pix are not] is heaven on Earth
Ocean view hiking is hard to beat.

i found a couple snapshots of that era. I cant find pix of my black or my silver GT2s, [and most everything else] as much of our pix from the non digital age burned in the 07 fire as we had them out in our storage container during a remodel ....Pardon the pic quality but it's all I have left...
Here's the gaillo GT2 on top of the world [Scheuren at Stunt and Saddlepeak] Malibu, and in the garage with the old skateboard tailed gt3!!! Don't ever get in my cars on the weekend any more given the bikes and nutz both 2 and 4 wheeled, just do the canyons on my daily driving routes.
I loved those GT2's. I did the road race in Nevada twice in this one, where they close the road for 125 miles and i averaged 120 successfully with a skilled co pilot Roland Roth who had averaged 198 {think about it], then I tried 140 average alone and was almost blown off by wind at 160 on a raised section of road... would not have survived, and retired. I'll never forget the fun of red line shifting the GT2 up the mountain in Death Valley every gear from 2nd!!! yeee haw... and running the empty north souths in Nevada at 130-155, just limited by road quality to keep it on the pavement. I was younger then!!!
Near the birth of all Piuma Life and the Lab-car life--
Near the beginning, here's Surf [gaillo] and Sandy [Nero under the rig with flash on her foot] as new puppies, with their leashes looped over the bumper of a certain rig in 1988, just after we arrived in Malibu from...[geuss]. Surf came home at 8 weeks sleeping on my knee in this car. Also in 1988, I was slamming rather noisily up Piuma in this rig, and low and behold here's a CHP with his hand up to stop me.... He says we're making a movie, and then says in the mic, here comes a cobra. I gently cruise up and they are filming a car flick - with 3 Cobras!! Life meets film on Piuma Road....
Surf and Sandy got bigger and still fit in the passenger seat with harnesses on for safety. Surf used to stand on the back deck of this rig at redlights if the car next to us had a dog, and bark at them! I'd have to ask him to descend into the seat when the light turned green.
After the forementioned trips with Surf and Sandy and two people in the C2s Cab, we got them a 500E the year it launched since after all Porsche designed and built it. Surf used to crawl [now full grown] onto the back window ledge and sleep; like a giant bobble head dog.
Hey neighbor, I just joined rennteam and the first thread I read has an image of my property in the distance. Gotta love that!
Wonderful and touching thread. Hope that Sun can still join you on many more canyon hikes, but watch out for the rattlers--as I'm sure you know. My Macey was bit twice in her first two years here, the second time defending her 6 mo old brother, Enzo.

see you soon! Surf and Spike were bit once each and Sky twice at same event, but w Labs Pacific rattlers are no big deal. Leg turns black, heals and they go on...... Compared to Green Mojave's in S Berdoo mtns and over in santa cruz county az where we had a ranch
Lord Sun, was struck on his pad on our high trail as a pup, and learned. When he sees them now he stops, looks back at Daddy, and waits til i flip them off the trail. They are good at reducing our squirrel and rat populations, which helps!

Watt, an 80 # dog like Macey should be able to withstand a bite. Alas, Macey is allergic to the venom, antivenin, and vaccine, so she was in serious trouble for a couple of days after her bites.
Porker, the Old Place is an institution in the Santa Monica Mts. I've been going there for decades--it ain't called the Old Place for nothin'--and now the food is better than ever. Nice to see that you found it on your visit to these parts.
Joe, more serendipity than influence. I took delivery of my DBM 991 at the end of June 2012, the first week of 2013 production.
