Any news on the spare tire?

Did anybody hear anything on the availability of a 997 spare?

Spareless anxiety has resulted in my mental processes degenerating into thinking of machining an adapter ring to make the BMW 26 inch (26?, it IS the same diameter as Porsche) compact spare work on the Porsche hub.

I was just driving nearby Palm Springs, travelling in the deserted desert secondaries and thought, "Gee, I wanna get stuck HERE? F*** No!"

But hey, it'll be about 25 less lbs to push :-) Seriously, can't the highest profit margin company in the world actually save weight through better materials rather than by leaving off a convenience and safety item like a SPARE tire?

Re: Any news on the spare tire?

Hmm. I really don't know so I am asking (truly)...Do Ferraris have spare tires?

Nope, but they do use the exotic materials which allow them to make a much wider car while still keeping the weight off.

Re: Any news on the spare tire?

Fellas, I could care less about weight while driving on a daily basis. If I wanted to race the car I would simply remove the spare tire and jack.

Forget this weight savings thing, it's mfgr propaganda designed to make you think you're getting a good deal when you're not. They get to pocket some cash and get the performance numbers lower for advertising the car, you get to take risk on a possible nightmarish roadside breakdown adventure.

What for? They don't go that far from home that it matters.

Max, do a search of the archives. There was an almost identical thread as this one started by someone who felt exactly as you do.

Apples and oranges argument. Their cars might be wider but their front wheels are narrower than a Pcar. Each company has found ways to save weight and now both don't offer a spare tire. Could be missing your point but you started to sound like Nick on that one.

That's odd. The 225s on the front and 285s on the rear of my Stradale just happen to be exactly the same size as those on my 996. I'd argue that it sucks that ANY car manufacturer leaves the spare off. BTW, your posts on the "SUV" thread re: mileage, resale and service of Ferraris is ignorant. I too was ignorant before actually researching them and buying one. IE: the % off MSRP for a 360 with 50k is probably considerably less than that of a 911 - any variant and judging from message board posts, service will be less often needed on the Fcar as well. Hell, that happens to 911s even if you DON'T drive em! (3 year old Spider with 72k miles recently sold for $135k - try getting that % of MSRP from any 3 year old 911 variant with 72k miles).

It's not your fault you're clinging to out dated ideas. Afterall, that's what Porsche is counting on to sell it's soft GT "sports cars" now that it is selling SUVs and shunning racing for the mighty dollar. People are clinging to outdated ideas re: the Vette too, but times are a changing. Hell, Cadillac is even cool now (and nice performing, and reliable, etc).

Re: Any news on the spare tire?

    Ben,

I applaud your passion for Ferrari, Chevy, and Cadillac!

But the point of this thread was to complain that the 997S does not have a spare...which I agree is ridiculous. But, if the Stradale doesn't have one either...I guess I kinda miss your point re: exotic materials if the F-car is also lacking a spare. I mean the 360 Stradale is at least 50% more expensive than a highly optioned 997S. Wouldn't it stand to reason that it would have more exotic materials?

Re: Any news on the spare tire?

I thought the 911 is the exotic daily driver, so why no spare?

It's also a much wider, bigger car so the exotic materials (like aluminum audi uses in most of their cars) is how they manage to give you that increased track and space without porking it up. The exotic materials also add to the car's rigidity and feel.

FWIW, I think it's wrong for a mass producing, very very high profit margin company to be unwilling to use some of the exotic materials (like the aluminum in a $40k audi) to save the 25 lbs so they can leave their customers with the safety and convenience that is a spare. Afterall, Porsche is supposed to be the everyday driving "supercar". Where's the everyday driving in having to have it towed to the shop anytime you have a meaningful flat tire? Is it really too much to ask for them save the weight somewhere else? In Ferrari's case, they're garage queens which therefore don't need spares, right

Re: Any news on the spare tire?

Given M3 and M5 also lack spares, sounds like a no-spare trend is underway . And given the prob greater likelihood of most supposed daily driver Mercs/BMWs to have an overall critical systems/software failure (or engine blowup in some cases), I suspect this spare tire issue is a lesser safety concern for modern-day, non-Japanese cars. And though I agree F's are perhaps more reliable than most German cars these days, when is F going to get some damn side/head airbags?....for all the hoopla re: weight, the porking-up 430 isn't materially lighter than a GT3. Seems to be difficult to identify one brand/model offering driving fun, safety and reliability in one package.....even cost/resale value no object.

    i strongly disagree,

perhaps relative to their own history, they are more reliable, but how can they compete with cars produced in much higher numbers by much larger companies

Definitely a counterintuitive phenomenon...but consider the volumes of S-Class, E-Class, 7-series, M3 etc produced in past few yrs...and most of those models have had several yrs to get the bugs out...but recent surveys indicate Merc/BMW are still struggling to debug these cars. Cayenne sounds like a disaster per owner surveys. F is too small for objective surveys, but anecdotal feedback from numerous owners seems to indicate 360 and 996TT are roughly similar in reliability....please educate us if you can find data supporting another view....

You can buy a BMW compact spare that will fit on the M3.

    That's nice.

Too bad the 997 tires are 1 inch greater in diameter, if that weren't the case you could use a 996 or 986 spare.

BMW doesn;t want to admit they make a spare to keep their BMW roadside assist program popular.

I guess Porsche just didn't get around to making a workable spare yet. Or they never will because there's no longer a means to secure it.

Re: Any news on the spare tire?

Max - so go to the dealer, buy a Porsche rim and tire and stop worrying about it ! What REALLY are the odds that you'll get a flat in the desert and be stranded and pass out from hunger?

Buy run flat tires? Carry a spare tire and tire machine on the roof??

SO tired of this I'd buy this car if only it had a spare tire BS. ?!?

If you're so worried - then buy an SUV and fill it with extra tires and survival equipment.. but STOP whining !!

The failure of the BMW TPMS in our previous E46 M3 which led my wife to be stranded with a damaged tire (couldn't be filled) with no spare is one of the reasons we ditched that car. As reliable as the electronics have been in our turbo Cayenne, don't rely too much on the TPMS from Porsche either.

Re: Any news on the spare tire?

Is this perhaps more of an issue in the US? I have not had a spare tyre on my Audi for the last two years the thought of being stranded has not once occurred to me. I mean, the maximum I would have to wait for a tow truck would be something like one hour. Is it really such a big deal that you would consider not buying the car?

By the way, isn't the lack of spare more to do with space than weight? If weight was such a big deal then electric seats, windows, air con wouldn't be standard items.

yes it is a big deal. There are lots of roads in the usa which you wouldn't want to be stranded on: not even for an hour.

There are lonely desert roads which are beyond the range of cell phones too.

Also, roads where you're trying to get somewhere for an appointment and a 15 minute DIY is much preferred to a 1 or two hour wait.

Oh and your 1-2 hour wait? that's also BS, because by the time you get a new tire on the frickin' car and drive away from teh Porsche dealer, you look at your watch and __eight__ hours have gone to hell.

It's !@#$%^& stupid to be driving without a spare!

    you're really a funny guy.

i think you're dramatizing this issue more than the neccecary.

    greetings

Re: Any news on the spare tire?

I think Ben is just disappointed that his Carrera GT is too low for his garage and his frustration is reflected in his posts. I mean...HELL: if I buy a car for almost half a million and it is too low to enter my garage, I would certainly put another 50000 bucks into lowering my garage if I really want to drive it. Or maybe I should put it this way in Ben's case: if I really CAN drive it. The faulty clutch must be really hard to live with.

And Porsche cars have bad performance? He must be kidding.
His Stradale would see only the exhaust pipes, but only for a few seconds , of a GT3 Mk2 and the Porsche costs more than 1/3 less than the Stradale.
And the 997 Carrera S does 0-125 mph in 16.1 seconds, this is a better time than the F360 Modena (16.6 seconds) and costs much less than the Modena, not to speak about the spectacular handling.

I think he's hanging out too much time with Nick...must be some sort of virus.

Sorry buddy, but the latest post is a request to find out if anybody has gotten any NEWS on the spare tire availability issue.

Oh, about the desert roads in CA, ever been there at night, or after sunset? Very "interesting" place if you've ever wondered about being robbed and murdered.

It's like climbing glaciers: move on thru of dangerous conditions as fast as possible.

Also, you and I aren't the only guys here. There are new people who weren't around when the issue was raised a while ago.

If you (or I) don't like a post, ignore it, okay?

Re: Any news on the spare tire?

SO Max my pal - you put on the spare in 15 min - then you STILL have to go to the tire shop and wait for them to put a new tire on etc etc etc... You're really worrying FAR too much about the things that are really unlikely to happen. For instance - you're much more likely to get into a car accident and demolish the car. So what I would do is concentrate not on the spare tire but on driving skills because at least that's something you can work on if you want. But having a flat is just dumb luck. If it happens, bummer, but there's not much you can do about it. Even if you DO get a FEW flats, you'll still spend 99.999% of your time with all four wheels in great shape and not waiting for a tow truck.

GO BUY THE CAR AND STOP WORRYING SO MUCH !! LIFE IS SHORT - GO GET THE FUN CAR YOU WANT AND STOP TRYING TO TALK YOURSELF OUT OF IT !!!

Re: Any news on the spare tire?

Actually, even if you could put on a spare, would the flat 19" tire/wheel even fit in the 997S? It would suck to put on a spare and then still have to get a truck to pick up the monster 19" wheel.
