    Electromagnetic suspension

    Eindhoven University researchers have demonstrated an electromagnetic suspension for cars.

    I think this could indeed be an improvement, for lap times and comfort, but I doubt  that any racing league will allow it.

    What do you think? Is it time for a new kind of suspension?

    The description is not clear as to whether the electro magnetic actuator simply replaces a hydraulic damper or if it also acts as a controllable-rate spring as well, reducing the coil sprung shown to the function of a helper spring for redundancy purposes? Smiley

    The latter configuration could be particularly attractive, especially if they can link up all four spring/damper units to an active suspension system.

    A neodymium magnet would handle most if not all of these issues.

    AFAIK it's an micro-processor controlled magnetic dampening system. So it is able to dampen a movement but the spring will still be needed to generate force.

    A system like this should have less moveable parts, but it'll need a micro-controller to work.

    I'm not a mechanical or electrical engineer, but I suspect the basic viscosity of the magnetic fluid in use on Corvettes, Ferraris, Cadillacs, etc. is attained "for free" while extra viscosity is attained with relatively small amounts of electricity.

    But I'm talking out of my butt on that one Smiley
