    05' 420 Modena...

    Ferrari's new mid-engined "mainstream" sports car is expected to debut in 2005. Reliable information on the technical specifications of the newcomer is still scarce, but it is believed that it will be powered by a 4.2-liter V-8 engine, not a V-10. Hence, it is dubbed the "420 Modena" or "420 Fiorano."

    The development of the 360 replacement has been infinitely more troublesome than could be to the company's liking. The appearance of the Lamborghini Gallardo sent top Ferrari management and engineers alike back to the drawing boards, and the 360 replacement program in Maranello ground to a halt. Not long after work had started again on the project, a fire devastated offices and workshops in Ferrari's development department in March 2004, damaging a number of invaluable prototype vehicles.

    The spy shots show a few exclusive details of the new vehicle, including flared front wheel arches and improved rear wheelhouses, which leave more room for larger wheels and an increased track width at the front and rear axles. The lateral air outlets in the front bumper have been enlarged to supply more air to the new 4.2-liter engine. At the rear, the prototype features a new bumper with smaller, dedicated openings around the exhaust pipes and a modified diffuser.

    Initially planned as a mostly technical freshening, the 360 Modena replacement project now seems to have become no less than a new vehicle, which also could include the introduction of a new Spider with a folding hard top in 2006.

    Im thinking that this car is more like a test mule than anything if the 420 is suppose to be an "all new car".

    I think the 420 will look different than today's car, but still will be recognized as an evolution of the 360.

    Guys, that is in fact NOT the new 420. I've got the same pic that RC has, the car looks different (especially front lights, air intakes, ...). Don't believe everything.... ;-)

    Nope. You guys are really funny, do you think Ferrari drives around in a non-camouflaged car showing off what they've got?
    The front on this test mule is NOT the front from the 420. And the rear air inlets are pretty good covered up.

    Right now I'm doing some description work for farina (thanks god he's German and I can use my mother language to describe the 420), so he is able to draw a sketch from it. I think it will be pretty nice since farina is very talented.

    Anyway, I love the photo of the guy casually hosing off the kerbs while the test car races by.

    The taped air intake is definetely different, what means located higher than at the current car and would match RC's description.
    Also the exhaust pipes are different, but they are surely provisional and won't look like that in the end.

    Probably the case that you see this test mule is because of the fire in the factory. The fire destroyed a few prototypes of the new 360 so Ferrari has to speed up the test programme.

    I studied the Ferrari test cars for years and like always it's the same like the Enzo. It also started with a strechted F355 before you saw the black car.

    I think that after the summer you will see a test mule with the real shape.

    When do you think the new car would start to be sold?? I think it's too little too late for fall 04' It looks like an 06' car for the US.

    I really don't see what sort of major components for the F420 M could be tested on a 360, the engine bay (id imagine) is too small for the much larger engine, and any sort of suspension could not be tested, as that the 420 is certainly heavier, has a different weight distribution, and a longer or shorter wheelbase. Perhaps tire compounds could be tested to a point, but not enough to really help development of a new car. As to the "stretched 355" I would imagine thats for engine testing, but this 360 seems not to have any dimension modifications. (but its not as if theyres a ruler there, so i do not know)

    There is no need for dimension modifications, as the new engine will fit into the engine bay of the Modena. As I said before, although Ferrari claiming the 420/430 to be a brand new car, it more looks like an evolution of the 360 to me.

    BTW, spoke to my dealer. The Modena is no longer available. His last car for a customer is due in May. Spider will be produced all over 2005. His last Challenge Stradale will be delivered approximately in November. So I guess we will see the 420/430 at the earliest in Paris and delivery will start around spring next year.

    another information:

    The sport exhaust for the Modena (presentation in Geneva) is said to be the same exhaust as delivered in the Challenge Stradale . Price should be around 3500.-- Euro.

    The Handling GTC package for the 575M should be priced at about 20.000.-- Euro .

    I just think 480hp is a tad bit weak considering the competition. I know its a Ferrari and will sound like heaven and get you babes but still, look at the compeition this car will be priced at and be taking on....they're not all sports cars but have similar performance:

    911T/911GT2 with possibly 500+bhp
    Lambo Gallardo
    Bentley GT
    AMG CL/SL55/65 cars
    AM DB9 with 450bhp *V12*
    Merc/Mac P8 with 500bhp
    Pagani with 500bhp.

    All the aforementioned current/future cars have some serious punch. The 360M with its "puny" torque less V8 should have some 5.0L displacement and 500+bhp> This will provide ample torque and some serious punch as well.

    The 360 is so light and controllable, yet its engine lets it down, not in sound of course, but in punch, with the upcoming 500bhp cars, I think 500 Ferrari horses should give back some respect...

    I read here sometime ago that Ferrari/Porsche only give limited hp gains with new models so they can shift large no. of models without having to invest heavily in uprating the engines, costcutting in other terms. Look at 355 v.s 360 hp gains.

    But still that badge should do it for just about anybody.

    I'm sure the 500+ HP will come later as a 420/430 CS. They always have to leave some room to make more money.

    Agreed but isn't in this day and age, 500hp agiven for a standard car to come from Italy? I guess Ferrari likes you to pay out of your nose for the best...GT3RS included Just kidding.

    Oh well, if it drives better than thats all that matters I suppose.

    If it has 480bhp and it's legitimately under 1400kg it'll leave most of the cars you mentioned for dead in every way that matters.

    That is THE point:

    If 480 HP (or more) under 1400 Kilograms (or near).........with the attractive lines Dr. Farina has in a such brilliant and realistic way has suggested......together with the technical data (suspension, weights balance, motor location etc....) are supposed to be, and should be the actual thing (I'm almost shure).....That is my next car!!!!

    The way to follow: a reasonable powerwd car, with a brilliant attitude when driven (and not only in a straight line) with a nice feeling under the wheel.....

    It's not a only matter of absolute power, as in other threats has been said............It's a matter of GLOBAL PERFORMANCE and "SELF HAPINESS" of the owner (After all, you pay a nice amount of money)

    I feel (and could be wrong), that once again, Ferrari has pristine clear ideas.

    Maybe the 420 has resemblances to the 360, but, under my humble point of view, it overpasses the "sweet" lines, and sincerely think will be a real step beyond.

    To confess I'm an all sport cars lover, and, in this moment, the "new ones" that only appeal to me are the Quattroporte (YES!), and the 420M.

    In spite the fact I was anxiously waiting for the 997, my feeling is that only a "makeup" (with extra weight -and that is the problem-) will be in the market. Hope that (as said in other posts) people at Porsche remember their real clients: the ones who love driving.

    Ferrari has (almost) never forgotten that.............

    I hope that the new Porsche TT will really will surprise us! (if not we'll wait to the "RUF".....but then again,......!Who knows in wich galaxy "Il Cavallino" will be flying!.....(forgeting about overpriced "dream cars"....)

    As a costumer, I'll marry everytime with the factory that can understand the needs of a sportive driver or. a car lover.

    At the moment, the fantastic new "Pure blood" from Maranello.........I'm really excited about the 420...
