POLL: Cayman, good choice for the upcoming Boxster derivate?

If CAYMAN is the new name of the rumoured Boxster Coupe, did Porsche choose this name wisely?
Please help to send a message, a good one or a bad one.
To gay Users: no offense taken, this is purely a marketing question and is not intended to offend anybody.

Re: POLL: Cayman, good choice for the upcoming Boxster derivate?

especially the last question is funny RC.. who gives a sh*t what jokes are made about the car. If you want to buy one, you'll know that people even make stupid jokes about the CGT, so what? I'd just be proud that I finally worked hard enough to buy it... screw the world!

so its supposed to conjure up images of crocodiles? (Kaiman) ?...

to me it sounds like the tax haven...

The problem is that a car like the "Cayman" has a certain target audience, I'd say buyers in the 25-35 years old range. Now if you think that these guys will be amused that people make fun of their cars... I remember that a lot of young people stopped buying an Opel because people started to call it "Popel", meaning the dirt which comes out of your nose (sorry, I don't know the english word for it).
And a young "stallion" who is on the lookout for a nice girl really doesn't want people to call his "Cayman" gay man. It is a psychological kind of thing and I hope Porsche's marketing department thought of that BEFORE they passed this name to AMS. I still have hopes that Cayman isn't the last word from Porsche.

Re: POLL: Cayman, good choice for the upcoming Boxster derivate?

Maybe the marketing dept. wants to test the waters, to see how the name is received?

you've probably just coined the number 1 insult to the cayman for years to come.

you've read it here first folks, per usuale.

Re: POLL: Cayman, good choice for the upcoming Boxster derivate?

If Cayman is the name that has been chosen, then it's a bit too late for Porsche to gauge reaction and respond. The official announcement of the coupe is due at the end of Feb, and I would guess that a lot of promotional material has already been prepared.

Re: POLL: Cayman, good choice for the upcoming Boxster derivate?

well, I then prefere the panamerico or whatever other name was deposited... I understand your point RC... people are sooo stupid, but I fear you are right.. a lot of people buy a porsche like it were a ferrari; to show off...

Re: POLL: Cayman, good choice for the upcoming Boxster deriv

Well, there we go, we talked a while back about the Cayman name being trademarked by Porsche and wondered what they would use it for

In spanish it isn't a bad name since caiman is the word we use for "alligator" in english, so it would be like the boxster coupe being called the "Porsche Alligator"... not very original though, a bit too adolescent. I wish they would take something from Porsche's history instead or simply Boxster Coupe.

Re: POLL: Cayman, good choice for the upcoming Boxster deriv

and another thing: cayman is not an international thing.. cayenne is, and carrera is too, but cayman is so very very english.... and it shouldn't be.

Porsche SC would suffice in my opinon. Simple, easy to remember and no danger of getting the writing wrong (Boxter instead of Boxster). What do you guys think?

Oh, wait, I found the best name for it: Porsche RENNTEAM. Imagine the money they would have to give us to be allowed to use this name. We would set up the nicest website on the whole web, a CRAY server with xxx Teraquads of memory, etc. And we could finally buy a Carrera GT to testdrive it and see if the clutch operation is really that tricky.

Re: POLL: Cayman, good choice for the upcoming Boxster deriv

Erm...to all of you who believe "Boxster Coupé" would be a nice name:
Boxster is a constructed word made out of "Boxer" (as in "Boxer engine") and "Roadster" (as in "open/convertible 2-seater").
Therefore the term "Boxster Coupé" would make very little sense, as it would mean "Boxer engined 2 seated open car with fixed roof"....

Like I usually say to my clients: "That's just a load of crap on a turnip truck!"

Re: POLL: Cayman, good choice for the upcoming Boxster deriv

How about Boxoupe or Boxcou or just plain boxcar

Re: POLL: Cayman, good choice for the upcoming Boxster deriv

I would have liked to see it called "porsche GT / GTS / GTCS" - covers all engine variants and the clubsport version. Only problem is that its too close in name to the carrera GT, and "porsche GT" kind of sounds like the name for their ultimate road car, not a mid range model.
I'm not mad on the CAYMAN name, but i'll still buy the car - from what i've heard it's going to be amazing.

Does anyone know if they're going to redesign it, seeing as it's effectively a different model from the boxster? Whereas i love the look of the new boxster, it would be great if they made the Cayman more distinctive, especially with Carrera GT or 996 turbo style side air intakes.....

Re: POLL: Cayman, good choice for the upcoming Boxster deriv

IMO porsche is very unfortunate with naming their cars in recent years.

carrera, turbo and targa are great, classic names.

modell numbers like 911, 959, 917 are cool.

    but nowadays?

boxster? horrible artificial combo name -- and even a lot of owners don't know how to spell it correctly.

cayenne? i never liked it. i know a lot of people who pronounce it "cheyenne", btw.

carrera GT? well, sounds good, carrera is cool, GT as well -- but does it suit the car? IMO it's neither a "carrera" nor a "grand turismo". so good sounding name, but inappropriate.

    but...

cayman is the most horrible of them all.

i don't get it why they aren't sticking to some nice production numbers. i'd always prefer names like X5, SL 55 AMG, F430, 911...

Re: POLL: Cayman, good choice for the upcoming Boxster deriv

    Boxera ?

Re: POLL: Cayman, good choice for the upcoming Boxster deriv

If the want to continue their products with the letter "C" I think "Coxster" ryhms better with "Boxster" and is more appropriate than "Cayman".

Re: POLL: Cayman, good choice for the upcoming Boxster deriv

Coxsters suck cox like no other car.
    Porsche. There is no substitute.

Re: POLL: Cayman, good choice for the upcoming Boxster deriv

Gayman & Coxster....hmm...guess it would sell well in certain target segments

Re: POLL: Cayman, good choice for the upcoming Boxster deriv

    Sportster?

Re: POLL: Cayman, good choice for the upcoming Boxster deriv

"Cayman" is ridiculous because of its double entrendre.

SC is the way to go.

Let Porsches attorneys just keep Cayman buried in their archives.

Re: POLL: Cayman, good choice for the upcoming Boxster deriv

the Boxster is already coined 'Chickster' or simply 'a chick car', so naming the much tougher coupe 'Cayman' is just asking for trouble.

I know this, you know this, but how many others do and more importantly out of that group, how many care? Porsche has never been about stupid catchy names until now. Ironically the rest of the automotive world is moving toward more letters and numbers to appear more sophisticated, while Porsche goes to more "hip" names that aren't hip. I still think that Boxster coupe would have been fine, as well as some simple letter designation that states what it is, like RC's SC.

Re: POLL: Cayman, good choice for the upcoming Boxster derivate?

If the decision on buying a car is based on the opinoins of others, then that is really, truly sad. If a car does it for you and does whatever it does that makes you want to front the cash to buy it, and ultimately makes you happy, then that is ALL that matters. I could care less about any verbal abuse passed out of the mouth from another individual, more than likely they're sad becasue either A. they wish they had a porshce. or B. You have a porsche and they don't.

    "Porsche, there is no substitute."

    - I think we ought to try remembering that qoute a little more often and when we do, we won't discuss petty things like this.

Just recently met a guy at my dealer who owns a Cayenne and pronounced the name all the time as "Cheyenne". When I tried to correct him in a very friendly and inoffensive way, he insisted that he got this name from a Porsche official. This guy also owns a F360 and may switch (hello Nick!) to a 911 soon because he finds it too flashy and he has to drive over 100 km to his mechanic whenever he has a problem and it happens often.

Maybe Porsche is more clever than we are because little by little I get my doubts that we enthusiasts here on the internet are still the target audience for Porsche products. Even worse, I get the feeling that a lot of people at Porsche actually don't like it at all that there are internet forums they can't control. Last time I "officially" spoke to them, I didn't have the feeling to be very welcomed.
Maybe they just don't understand how such forums can create a very strong bond to a certain brand/product, even if we criticize a lot sometimes.

People who spend time criticizing or complaing about a particular brand or product are normally the ones who are most loyal to that brand.
If you dont care-you dont bother complaining or debating.
That goes for everything in life - including cars.
We complain and debate when we feel something is wrong, because each and every one of us has a certain connection to the Porsche (or Mercedes or Ferrari etc) brand. Because we give a damn - to be blunt.

I hope Porsche knows this - or will learn- otherwise they risk alienating the most die-hard fans and allies they will ever have.

I think you are totally correct. I'm beginning to think Porsche only wants rah-rah boys that won't have anything bad to say about anything they do. They prefer the quiet, "simply hand over the money" type of buyer compared to the true enthusiast with a passion for the company and their cars that goes way back before the 996/Boxster were even thought of.

Re: POLL: Cayman, good choice for the upcoming Boxster deriv

    Exactly RC and Dr. Phil

If I didn't care about Porsche and Porsche did things I didn't like with their cars I'd just buy something else. However, I complain about everything I don't like because I want Porsche to fix it so I can buy the kind of Porsche I want. Are you listening Porsche?!?!
