I have been hard on the R because personally I am getting frustrated buying super sport cars to make them garage queens. I love by RRS and driving the Boxster S is a blast. They serve my purpose and provide the satisfaction I need.As Unatoz alluded to and many of us have known, these cars are nothing more than toys and expensive ones at that.

Today I sold my GT3. My wife implored me to reconsider. But honestly I could not enjoy a car that I can only use 20% of its potential. Maybe the Alpa 4C is a car I should look at. The thing is I am not into auto crossing and driving it on a big track would create the same problems I had with the GT3.surprise

Nick, you should have gotten yourself a 991 C4 GTS convertible, like I did. This is a car you can really enjoy at lower speeds as well and actually this is one Porsche I do not really enjoy driving on the Autobahn but in the city and on country roads. You live in San Diego, a GTS convertible would be perfect for you, trust me. You should take a test-drive, maybe you find a slightly used one somewhere (or maybe even a new one if a dealer has a car left, not very likely though). The C2 would be OK as well but the C4 also adds some rain driving fun (if you leave Sport/Sport Plus deactivated).

    Just saying... Smiley

I won't speak for Nick but one factor for the 991 GTS cab is the ridiculous price and abysmal depreciation vs the GT3. You can buy a 4C with the 3-4 year depreciation of the GTS...

To each his own, I love manual cars and own two of them but manual does not really belong to a high performance car in 2016. The spyder and 4C might be exceptions but in GT3 or GT4 or R?

When I buy a car, unless I need it for the wife or my mother, I let emotions steer me, not my brain. Maybe a problem but I do not buy my daily driver or weekend toy car based on reason and resale value. Never did (which again, could have been a problem but I never cared).

Didn´t you take care what your customers are saying?

Don´t you have to look at your bank account?

I think there are only few people here who can just buy a car by emotions only without any limitations like price, monthly lease, social environment.

Well, of course I cannot afford a car which is outside my financial possibilites. I only have to care about customers when it comes to my daily driver, not the weekend toy car. The weekend toy car would have been a problem regarding the neighborhood but we do not really care anymore since the kids are older and there is a McLaren in the neighborhood now and also a couple of other sports cars, incl. Porsche.

I never think about resale value when I get a car, even if I may consider it in my plans.

    Re: OFFICIAL: 911 R (2016)

Nick, it's more money but what about an LFA? Semi-auto, glorious sound, probably only a time-value of money cost (sell it for what you paid for it). You can drive it as fast as anything but just piddling along it sounds wonderful and gives you everything you need.

there's a brand new, never titled one for sale in Carlsbad. white on red leather.

    Re: OFFICIAL: 911 R (2016)

You cannot dissociate emotions, value and practicably even for for daily driver cars... Sad fact is most of us even here cannot buy just whatever they want whenever they want in any number they want. Even if money is not the object for some other aspects will kick in (availability, space, usability, insurances, maintenance...).

Regarding value, everyone is different. Personally I think that there is no modern car (or watch for that matter) in the world worth paying over MSRP. Shortages of some models were created artificially to help some brand "friends" and to deepen networking, also to create the ILLUSION that a product is more desirable than it really is. And human nature will make it irresistible for some to jump in if they are offered. The 991 R is the perfect example of this, most 918 owners can't seriously really care about that car, they have a 918 in the garage and probably some other really cool toys, they just buy the R because they can and will pitch it as soon as possible to make room for something else, the next "must have" toy.

Let me switch guns a little though, what if instead of a material thing, it was something more emotional like getting your kids into a specific school? What would you do?

Yes, definitely invest in the kid's educations all day long (with the assumption that the kid is really studying hard for a goal, but not just get into a specific school for parties).

Family is way above my toys.  I will sell all my Porsches if money is needed to fund my family's education or health care need.  I'm sure everyone here will do the same.  Fortunately, I have the choice of selling some real estates and stocks before the Porsches.Smiley

    Re: OFFICIAL: 911 R (2016)

I have mixed emotions letting it go and I guess in some respects I already miss it. But I cannot think with my heart. The car is ill suited for regular roadways. As a result, It was a garage queen.

The buyer was in his mid 30's and it was his first Porsche. The excitement on his face when the keys were handed to him made me envious because I know the feeling.

The Lexus LFA is a car I believe Futch (Franchoise) has indicated as one of his favorite cars. Given the fleet that he owns that is high praise. But my problem is paying over MSRP $396,000 plus CA Tax and fees the car will be close to $450,000, $100,000 over MSRPmail and it is almost 5 years old. Granted only 500 were produced but here again I am faced with a high performance car not suitable for US highways and roads. Also, it lacks at least for me the "got to have" factor because I am not a fan of Japanese styling.

The car that checks all boxes for me is the Huracan. Wonderful styling, excellent performance, an exhaust to die for, exclusivity, has gravitas, high quality and priced right $200,000. The only downside is the issue of depreciation.

Decisions Decisions Decisions. A nice problem to have. I plan to take my time on this one.indecision

    Re: OFFICIAL: 911 R (2016)

A Hurracan would attract as much if not more attention than a Ferrari (and that is why the car is popular in Beverly Hills).  Pretty digital feeling car, so will be interesting to see if it keeps you happy in normal road driving.  With that sound, maybe it would.

    Drive them all IMO.

    Re: OFFICIAL: 911 R (2016)

I just read a review of the 2016 Huracan Spyder. This these two paragraphs describe how I feel about high performance sport cars.

"This thing was not meant to spend its life cruising South Beach, soggy or otherwise. Tolerant though it may be of low-speed crawling, it wants you to rev its free-breathing V10 to the sky and experience the perception-warping thrill of Vmax.

Maybe that's the curse of owning a daily-drivable supercar, or super-sports car, or whatever something low and wide with 600-plus hp and all-wheel drive is considered these days: Unless you're behind the wheel purely to bask in the adoration of exotic car-hungry plebs, you're reduced to living for the occasional track day, or a few miles on your favorite quiet backroad, or a blessed break in the traffic on an unpatrolled stretch of I-95."

    Re: OFFICIAL: 911 R (2016)

Ferrari California... It is a jack of all trades like the 911, but with exotic look and premium ownership experience. Coupe/Convertible with double clutch and nice interior. I would go for a Cali 30 and not a T... Probably around $160k with 4 years expected depreciation $60k. A new 911 turbo, Hurracan or V12 Aston would loose that in one year.

Maybe replacing a 475hp car with a 600hp car is the wrong idea.  Recently did a 1 hour "cruise" with some Lotus guys.  We decided to go slow.  Yet I redlined the car in 1st and 2nd gear over and over.  3rd gear a few times too (that gear tops at 80mph or so).  You cannot do that with a 600hp Lambo.  As for cornering, all these cars are too capable to push on the street.  You'd need to buy a classic to have interesting handling day to day.  Bringing this thread back to full circle, this is part of the point of the 911R over a GT3.  More exploitable in the street.

As I mentioned before, you need something less objectively capable.

Finally, no sports car in history has ever been fun in traffic, so that's not a solvable problem IMO.

    Re: OFFICIAL: 911 R (2016)

I agree with your comments. I am not wedded to the Huracan nor am I wedded to any sport car. I need to step back and see if I miss having one. Smiley
