What Does "Point & Shoot" Mean As Turbo Attribute

Just wondering what that "point and shoot" ascription means when guys are talking about the Turbo; often used when comparing it to the 997/S.

Does it mean you just aim the car and flatten the gas pedal to get there as opposed to solving problems with the gear shift?

It's gotta mean more than that..., right?

Re: What Does "Point & Shoot" Mean As Turbo Attri

The car accelerates like a slingshot. You aim the nose, and punch it. On a road course/track, the car so quickly covers the ground between turns that it is unsettling at first. Most people are used to having time to prepare mentally for the next braking point, turn-in, throttle, etc. With the turbo you have little such time

Re: What Does "Point & Shoot" Mean As Turbo Attri

It also implies that the 4WD takes alot of micromanagement /etc out of the driving experience.

Re: What Does "Point & Shoot" Mean As Turbo Attri

Yep, just as Eclou describes. My modded E55 was like that as well. Be driving along a highway and you'd see a spot up ahead "I want to go there" BAM, hit the pedal and you are there!

Re: What Does "Point & Shoot" Mean As Turbo Attri

I positively loved the point-and-shoot natural of the car. And what if someone can corner better? To me the corner is where I let the other car reel me in so I am blow past him again on the straight. It's so much more fun to demoralize the other car repeatedly than just leaving him in the dust once and for all.

Re: What Does "Point & Shoot" Mean As Turbo Attribute

Agree...."point and shoot" largely refers to effortless mid-range tq and accel (if truly effortless, should be w/o lag; not dpdt upon gear; and not traction-limited)....and vs cars w/weak mid-range tq like 997S/430/G, 997TT is clearly more "point and shoot"....

But would argue 997TT's rather noticeable turbo lag makes it far less of a point/shoot car than 599 (which has both ample tq, w/linear, NA delivery, as well as prob world's fastest gearbox...until Scud arrives...and excellent traction in both bumpy stretches and wet)....

65's tq should logically make it king of point/shoot, but it's often traction-limited on real-world bumpy, dry stretches of fwy, let alone wet, so find my CL63 to seem faster than my prior SL65 in useable, mid-range accel on urban CA fwys...

Re: What Does "Point & Shoot" Mean As Turbo Attribute

The so called turbo lag is nonexistant on the track.

Re: What Does "Point & Shoot" Mean As Turbo Attribute

On the track the revs rarely drops below 2k hence no lag

Lag on the 997tt can and will occur above 2k. I.E. cruising/lumbering along on the highway @ 3k or so and goosing it; I had several instances of lag. Not a lot but very noticeable. Even occured when I floored the throttle and activated overboost. And, I always drove with the sport button on and extra boost at the ready.

Re: What Does "Point & Shoot" Mean As Turbo Attribute

On the highway lumbering/cruising is quite different than tracking, on the track the revs goes constantly up and down and the throttle is at least half if not wide open most of the time.

On your highway cruise, look at the boost bar gauge, you might not even show any boost even at 3k if you are only using a faction of the throttle. But drive spiritedly with bigger throttle input and you will see the boost gauge is at least half full if not more.

When you have been cruising with a small throttle opening, there aren't enough exhaust gas to spool up the turbos even at 3k so basically the blades are like idling, and when you step on it, it takes time for the exhaust gas to spool up the turbo before building up the boost. If you have been driving spiritedly, the turbo blades are already spinning fast enough that just cracking the throttle will give you the instant boost. It has nothing to do with the sports button.

I completely agree. (I mentioned the sport button because I was trying to convey that I had overboost available on demand at such low revs. I realize that the two have nothing in common.) I guess I was too lazy or distracted to read the first couple of words of your first post. I never had lag when keeping the go pedal busy; and keeping those turbos loaded.

Whoopsy! You're mean spirited. Learn to take the corners, leave the guy in the dust and go after the next guy. It's like shooting fish in a barrel.
