    Comparison summer/winter/all season tyres

Questions about the need for winter tyres , or all season tyres being good enough, has sometimes been debated on this board, but never with real facts. Here is a serious test about it.

It has been done by the Swiss Touring Club ( highly serious and respected)

Test conditions            summer tyres        winter tyres        all season

    Braking on dry A      100-0 km/h, 10 deg C           38m                           51m                    49m

    Braking on dry B      100-0 km/h, 20-25 deg C      38m                           56m                     52m

    Braking on wet A     80-0 km/h, 10 deg C              43m                           40m                    44m

    Braking on wet B      80-0 km/h, 20-25 deg C       40m                           45m                      47m

    Braking on snow       40-0 km/h                                61m                           29m                     42m

    Fuel consumsion        l/100km                                   7,5                             7,6                        7,9

    Wear A                           10 degrees  C                      105%                        100%                   115%

    Wear B                           20-25 deg C                          100%                         115%                  110%

Interesting , no ?  I just wish the test would of been done when the cold temperature was more around 2 or 3 degrees C

Again, it prooves that half mesures awail nothing. Put the right type of tyres on for the right season. You will be more efficiant not only in traction, but also in breaking distance, fuel efficiency and tyre wear.

Having all season tyres the whole year around ends up costing quite a bit more per year then having summer + winter tyres.

After trying to dial out all my neg cambers last winter and still not seeing any decent grip even in a straight line, I am definitely getting some winter tyres next time the temperature consistently drops below 10 deg C!

But with the kind of power you have on your car , even if you get better grip ( I would say below 6 or 7 degrees) you will need to be gentle on the throttle , otherwise they will wear out in no time

    Re: Comparison summer/winter/all season tyres

I was losing grip even under 2/3 throttle (so about 350bhp) in a straight line and I have 4wd!

My tyre wear (and temperates across the face of each tyre after a vigourous spin) was measured last weekend and all 4 tyres are wearing very well and evenly.

That's with Michelin PS2's (which are all rounders) after 3000 miles.

Highly interesting, thanks for posting, Gnil. Smiley

There's no alternative to having two sets of tyres, when you plan to drive your car during the winter and when there actually is a winter of course. Smiley

What surprised me is the tyre wear. I've expected higher tyre wear of winter tyres at higher temperatures, but I didn't know that summer tyres show higher wear at lower degrees as well. And I would also have expected the difference in consumption to be more than just 0.1 litre/100km.

    Re: Comparison summer/winter/all season tyres

    Thanks very useful!

However, were the 3 types of  tyre of the same manufacturer?

It's not where you're going, it's how you get there that counts

    Re: Comparison summer/winter/all season tyres

Interesting Gnil  - thanks!  I agree though that 10C is not cold enough to show the limitations of summer tires, or the benefits of a/s ones.    And all seasons are no longer all the same - there is a wide range of "safe family style"  a/s all the way to high performance ones with much stiffer sidewalls; they all have rubber that does not become dangerously hard at low temps.

For my use in a location where our "hot" summer is quite short, and we have much more time in conditions of near zero in the morning but +10 in the afternoon, my warm season tires are in fact all seasons....  Pirelli P Zero Nero M+S, which are a well known high performance all season.... I give up a slight amount of lateral grip from pure summer tires (but not much on a Subaru STi) but gain enormous safety and confidence to drive hard in all temperatures from ~April to early December.  Smiley

    Re: Comparison summer/winter/all season tyres

Yes, you definitely shouldn't be using winter tyres at 10C. They start being an improvement on snow or ice, so usually at lower than 4C or so.

I switch to my winter tires when day time temperatures are below 10C. Below 7C the rubber compound on the Z's gets hard and you lose cornering grip, but more importantly your braking performance is greatly affected. Once you notice the ABS activating under semi-aggressive braking, it's time to switch to the winter set.
