    Call me nuts! .. here I come Istanbul

    With luck, in the next day or two I will be off for Istanbul. I've driven there in the Porsche before but last time there was two of us and this time it will be just one. Last time we went slowly along the black sea coast (Romamia & Bulgaria). This time I will travel via Zagreb and Belgrade.

    Should be fun! Then a little time in Istanbul, more time in Greece and finally home via the ferry to Italy and up through Switzerland around the 20th. Actually I'm most concerned that the weather in Switzerland is still ok then (I'll be on summer tyres).

    Oh yes, and yesterday was probably my last day on CD plates. Before I leave I need to transfer it to Belgian transit plates. Too bad as they would have been damned useful in eastern Europe.

    Gee you are nuts to the power of 2

    Since you are in Turkey you might as well stop by Iraq and visit the troops too they're not too far from there.

    Good luck, Stephen. We already had a little chat about this trip via eMail and you know my safety concerns but I guess crazy people need to do crazy things.
    Just can't wait to read your travel report, maybe incl. some pictures.

    Thank you Christian and everyone for all of the good wishes.

    Alas, I've got stuck with registration problems. I had a last second snag in Belgium and now I'm down in Campione d'Italia working on getting Swiss non-resident plates. Of course, problems crop up and everything is taking longer than it should. It might just be that I won't have the time to make it to Istanbul.

    The photo was taken early Friday morning on the way from Belgium to Campione. The Swiss public seem to take exception to those who do not follow the rules. Cell phone vigilantism. The police turned all of the highway lights to red and came and found me in the stopped traffic. They tried to get me to confess which I refused to do. Having seen nothing themselves they could do nothing. This really pissed them off. Then they started to talk about breathalysing me (yeah, right). All's well that ends well.

    What an excellent way to start a trip! You should never wait too long before bringing yourself to the attention of the police.

    Thanx GM. The photo was taken by balancing the camera on the 996 dash in front of the wheel and putting it on time delay to avoid camera shake. Those are not my headlights shining but just the parking lights. It was a very long exposure. It was extremely dark and the lights from the police car were confusing the camera. I took a few exposures and this one came out.

    Alas, it seems I've been coming to the attention of the police rather often lately. I think I've had more conversations in the past few weeks than in the last three years! Either I've changed or the situation in Europe has changed. I fear the latter.

    It would seem that you are currently ahead of me in the law enforcement popularity contest. I think much of it is just random though. I went for 20 years without a citation with the last eight driving a Guards Red Porsche! And it's not like I was driving slow. My wife could climb in the very same vehicle and collect tickets like crazy. Now I am starting to get one about once a year. I think I can live with that. But still, it's much more attention than I used to get and I don't think my driving has changed either. I'm even driving a silver SUV now!
