Yes, but a real shame never-the less (that it is just a PS). A car like this (with these looks) would make a significant contribution to the desired 200K unit sales per year.

Why should I lie? I would have preferred a Panamera Coupe with two doors but a similar room in the back and a larger luggage room. The Coupe is really something people are missing from Porsche but at the time they are offering it, people probably won't be interested anymore. Smiley

Remember the 928? Fantastic Porsche model, especially the last GTS generation but Porsche planned to replace the 911 with it, huge mistake.

    Re: Panamera Coupe Picture

Agreed! Although I must say that I was never a 928 fan. The design just did nothing for me. (Just personal taste).

It really was a huge mistake to think that the 911 could be substituted by the 928.

A car similar to the one in the PS has a much more consensual design and therefore is more appealing to a larger group of people....but I dont see it as a substitute for the 911.

Just compare the design to the Mercedes CL which was available at the same time.

I never really liked it - until RC posted those pictures.  It is quite remarkable how modern it looks today.  Apart from the steering wheel, and .....the Beetle switchgear..!)

    Re: Panamera Coupe Picture

It is just a matter of personal taste. At the time the 911 was also much smaller, and this car looked big and weird (at least to me). I remember at the time it being labeled by many porschephiles as a "Porsche for Americans" (those were less PC times than today). I recognize the merit in the forward looking design; it just doesn’t make my heart sing.

I was referring to the GTS but you are right, the base design is older (which makes it even more impressive).

I always liked the 928 and never understood why Porsche didn't pick up this idea again. Most people of my age (46) and older don't necessarily want to drive a four door sedan but we need a lot of interior room and luggage room. A Panamera Coupe would be perfect.

    Re: Panamera Coupe Picture

That 928 S4 when it came out was incredible, and amazing to see how well the design has held up till today....I wish Porsche had kept the series in production, can only imagine what an evolved design would have looked like

    Re: Panamera Coupe Picture

The 928's production ended because there was very little demand for it in the last few years. A few hundred cars if I remember well. I don't know if this was due to its very long run (since late 70's) or the appearance of better cars from rival manufacturers.

Porsche didn't have the funds to invest in a new 928 at the time, so it was abandoned. They produced the Boxster instead which was a success and then they turned to SUVs and limousines. The front engined super coupe seems to be a low priority for Porsche because even if it materializes it will be preceded by the Macan and the mini Panamera first.

Another factor in the demise of the 928 without a successor was the fact that a planned new model, the 989, was stillborn due to the acknowledgement during its development that it would have been too expensive to build for the market as it then was.

If you think about it the 989 was shortened into a 2 door car, and became the 996.

    Re: Panamera Coupe Picture

When the production of the 928 GTS ended in 1995 the "premium" over a 993 Carrera Coupe was 28%

    993 : 128,000 DM (incl 15% VAT)  = 65,000 EUR (non reevaluated)
928 GTS : 164,000 DM (same as above) = 83,800 EUR (same as above)

If we would apply the same ratio today on a standard 991 (88 K EUR list price in Germany) the entry level Panamera Coupe (in S spec) should be priced around 112 K EUR. It is not  a perfect comparison nevertheless can be some food for thought.

If "shortened" embraces "eliminating two doors and two cylinders, changing the rest of the engine from a vee-configuration to a boxer, moving the engine from the front of the car to the rear", then maybe it did.  Smiley

I love the 928 GTS, still a fantastic GT car by today's standards and way in advance of its time, as often the case with Porsche.

Wasn't the 968 a successor to the 928? I know it has only 6 cylinders, but it was introduced after the 928, wasnt it? Or was it a crossover between the 993 and the 928?

The 968 was the successor of the 944 and it was powered by a four cylinder engine.

@Joost:  You may be thinking of the fact that the 944/968 4-cylinder engine was originally derived from one half of  the 928's V8 cylinder block. The 944 and later the 968 were produced concurrently with the 928 and were below the 911 in price, whereas the 928 was above the 911.
