    Motor Trend - 998 will be front engined??

    While I tend not to believe most of what I read in auto-rags, Motor Trend is speculating a few things. But the 998 comment does not seem that far-fetched.

    Ok, well, if there's a cab hardtop, where did the engine go? Plus we've seen these spy shots of the wreck, it has a cab top. I think this might be more realistic for the 998 below if it holds true...

    Ok, the year is obviously wrong (not 2005), but the idea is not that far-fetched. Porsche purists will scoff at the idea of a front-engined (more like a GT) 911, but maybe its not crazy especially if you are a bean-counter. We all know the benefits to mid engine design (ala Boxster and CGT) and the rear engine issues which Porsche has dealth with so well. But front engine? Thoughts? RC - any rumours?

    the 998 is not the front engined GT car everyone is speculating about, it's the next new 911 after the 997 (yet to come) -- it will appear probably 4 years after the 997 and will be a complete new 911, but with a rear engine for sure. there are rumours about an optional 8 cylinder engine for the 998 -- the rear seats have to go then. maybe a retractable roof (like merc's SL/SLK) will be introduced for the 998 convertibles as well. porsche is doing research on this for a long time now.

    Porsche purists already scoffed from 1977-1994 ( model 928 )-history will repeat, esp now that 500-600 hp luxury/sporty coupes are tumbling out of everyone's product portfolios compared to the 80s . New PAG bean counters seem to have amnesia about 928's dismal sales history , especially in the important US market , where that porky luxocruiser ( usually sold with automatic transmission )should have done best , but didn't.

    998 makes more sense since Porsche bought the company that makes those roofs.

    If that is the case what do you think W.W. from PAG was talking about when he suggested they were "considering" a 4th model??? Maybe something off the Cayenne platform?

    This most definetly means that the 998 will be split into two different types of sports car if these flat eight rumors are true. The flat six for a gt type, the flat eight for an all out sports car, not to say that the flat six models wouldnt also come out that way, just the flat eight more so.
    This car would most definetly get my money!

    My guess would be a 4 door sedan (E-class,5 series) competitor built on the Cayenne platform.

    You would have 4 different engine versions:

    V6: 250 HP
    V8: 340 HP
    Bi-Turbo V8: 450 HP
    Bi-Turbo V8: 510-525 HP

    Possibly even a High performance diesel.

    4-wheel drive and its gearbox.
    Airsuspension.
