    Tiptronic Question....

Have a question for you all lucky 997 drivers. I have a 997s on order and I was wondering about the tiptronic gearbox for the 997. After numerous searching, I have come to learn that the tiptronic always starts in 2nd gear when in D mode. However, I was wondering, does it start in 1st gear when you drive it in M mode? More specifically, let's say I was driving along and come to a complete stop, does the gearbox automatically downshift to 1st gear in M mode, or do I have to manually downshift it from 2nd to 1st every time?

Another question is, under normal M mode (not Sport M-mode), does the gearbox automatically upshift at the redline?

    Thank you for your help!

    Re: Tiptronic Question....

As far as I know the tip starts in first gear if you make an instant kickdown.

Otherwise, in M mode it is your choice whether you start in 1 or 2. Hey, it's manual mode, so you give set the gears.

If not in sport mode nor PSM off, the tip upshifts at the redline.

    Re: Tiptronic Question....

In M mode, if you do not give any shift inputs at all, the transmission will downshift to 2nd gear when you come to a stop. You have to manually drop it down to 1st gear. Also, in normal M mode, the gearbox does automatically upshift at redline.

    Re: Tiptronic Question....

I also believe that if you drive aggressively for some period of time the Tip will re-map itself and begin to start in 1st. Though if you then drive leisurely again, it will re-map back to start in 2nd. I don't know the drive "time" required for the re-map sequence.

It doesn't do that per se. If you have Sports Chrono plus, with the Tip in auto mode and SC in sport mode, you can induce it to come to a stop in first gear by by using moderate to heavy braking. In a 997 without Sports Chrono, you always have to put it in first, or if driving in auto mode you can get it to launch in first by going to slightly better than half throttle at launch.

    Re: Tiptronic Question....

Actually, that is incorrect. The transmission will never "learn" to start in 1st gear every time. It only starts in first for a short period of time with a cold engine in order to get heat to the catalytic converters to reduce start-up emissions; once warm it reverts to second gear step-off.

    Re: Tiptronic Question....

hey Neosky, as I am too drive a 997S tip in Taiwan for almost 1 year now, only time I have second thoughts is when I like to take it to track... but since there is NO track to take it to... doesn't matter. But a PDK option would be a best way to go!!!
And YES, when engine is cold, even in D mode, car will run in 1st gear for about 1 min to heat up the CAT.
Rest of the time in D mode, you will need to dial in the SPORT mode to get it to start from 1st gear. And of course, in M mode, you can select it with you thumb.

    Re: Tiptronic Question....

    Hey WR,
    What is a PDK option?
So if you switch to Sports mode, the car automatically starts in 1st in D mode? Also, another question, how do you get the car to be in the S mode? Since I haven't received my car yet, I can only look at pictures on the brochure and I don't see anything with "S" on it.

    Re: Tiptronic Question....

It's very nice to see someone from Taiwan is also on this forum. My car is scheduled for May delivery and it's Lapis Blue 997S, with full leather interior, Bose stereo, aluminum deadpedal, metallic paint (can't believe they charge extra on this type of car), PSE, and I'm comtemplating on the Porsche aerokit.

I originally wanted to get a manual, but the traffic condition in Taipei is just horrible. Despite Taiwan do have some nice winding roads, I just don't see the point. Also, I think I will have a hard time selling the car in the future with a manual, since most Porsches in Taiwan are tiptronic.

    Where are you located WR?

    Re: Tiptronic Question....

hello neosky, I am in Taipei most of the time, although I drive to Tainan everyweek for 2 days for work, but I do stay mostly in Taipei city. I went through the same thinking process as well as you; selling the car would surely be much easier with a tip. My car is GT sliver with black interitor 997 C2S.

I peronally did not like the aero kit, I would rather go with after market brands for the same price. I very much prefer the 'old' look... a plain body kit less look on a car with this type of classic styling.

Only thing I think you might want to add to your list is the PCCB. I did not have it on mine but I used it on track in NAPDE, I mean it does wonders for stopping powers!!!

Agin, it is nice to know someone on this forum who is living in Taiwan. I am currently traveling in Australia or else we can meet up one day. Be back in Taiwan by end of the week.

    Re: Tiptronic Question....

    neosky, i forgot to add...
You should definitly try the Sports Adaptive seat. It is very good.

    Re: Tiptronic Question....

I have a 997 4S with tip shift and chrono pack.
    I had a 996 4S tip before that.
I tip execution on the 997 is 100% better then on the 996. I found myself using the manual option a lot on the 996 but with the 997 the box get it right 99% of the time. I find I always drive with the Sport option on and the PASM on normal. I wish one could set these as a defult setting. To answer your question unlike the 996 which always started in 2nd gear unless the vehicle was cold, The 997 starts in first gear with the sport option on and second with it off.
As I use the car everday and sometime have to contend with traffic issues. The tip is a must, it allows me the best of both worlds. I have a 997 turbo on order and it will also have the tip option.

    Re: Tiptronic Question....

The tip is great in every way except that it cant launch from a stop quick....it helps if you have chrono but still has that lag between 1000 and 3500...Although if you add a powerkit this will help you get more torque low down.

    Re: Tiptronic Question....

The tips great, unless you like racing or track.
I've got a 997s tip, and no complaints here

X51 IS the solution--my Club Coupe Tip launches faster/stronger than the 01 996 Turbo Tip I had before it.

    Thanks
