Re: Sport Auto - Porsche 911 Carrera S vs. 4S (on dry, wet and snow)

Very interesting results. Thank you for taking the time! Interesting to see that the 4S does not lose any time during acceleration, even at higher speeds. I assume that this particular example was on the powerful side, nonetheless the performance is impressive. 30 kg difference is truly negligible and impressive as well. A bit surprised that there was no performance difference on the wet handling circuit but obviously, on the Carrera S, tire width and traction is sufficient enough for those circumstances that the 4S does not present any improvement. If the steering feel on the 4S is also better than on the 2WD version, those are certainly enough strong points for that model variant.

Re: Sport Auto - Porsche 911 Carrera S vs. 4S (on dry, wet and snow)

So according to these numbers a 997.2S PDK is faster than both 991S and 9914S manual from 0-200kph!!!!

Surprised to see 991S being beaten even on dry tarmac around the track and being able to match the 4S on wet without loosing time!!! These 4WD systems are getting better everyday, still there's nothing like 2WD for real sports driving pleasure, making the rear dancing with your right foot is priceless !

Re: Sport Auto - Porsche 911 Carrera S vs. 4S (on dry, wet and snow)

The surprise for me is the superb traction of the RWD in the wet. The AWD Carrera is for the all-year driver in areas where it snows a lot. However, the Porsche AWD has improved. In the past the Porsche AWD hardly turned in tight corners on the track, whereas now on Klein Kurs Hockenheim at least (where the test was conducted) it matches the RWD car.

But for driving pleasure (the essence of owning a sportscar) the Carrera RWD is still the right choice. Get the purer car and use a SUV when it snows.

I don't have a copy of SportAuto here but wasn't the 991s faster than 991-4s in the dry? Maybe the lap times in the dry are just the other way round?

Re: Sport Auto - Porsche 911 Carrera S vs. 4S (on dry, wet and snow)

No, the 4S was slightly faster in the dry in the Klein Kurs, as above. These differences are of academic importance. IMO the S is now fast and safe in the wet (a RWD Porsche weakness in the past) plus it is the sportscar with the better driving feel and pleasure and you save a substantial amount of money.

Re: Sport Auto - Porsche 911 Carrera S vs. 4S (on dry, wet and snow)

The differences between the 4S and the S were minimal indeed but looking at the whole picture, the 4S is the clear winner here. Didn't we have a discussion about the advantages of AWD on a car? indecision While the advantages in the dry are minimal, also due to the excellent traction of the rear engine design, under more slippery road conditions, the AWD surely has an advantage. Yes, the wet performance of the S is impressive but like I said before, the rear engine design provides excellent traction.

Btw: With PDK, the 4S would have been even faster (PDK networking with PTM/AWD system), apparently this is the reason they chose the manual version on both cars.

There can be variation between the options of the cars. Thus result in less weight difference between RWD vs AWD.

According to the Sport Auto article the steel sunroof on the S, increased weight by 14.8kg! This alone brings the weight difference closer to the official 50kg.

And those who order this option beware of the weight penalty!

I don't think that 14kg really have such a huge impact on performance but anyway, the weight in the review is the measured weight, not the weight claimed by manufacturer specs.

Living in Bavaria, I would choose the 4S but I think that if you live in a warm region, the S would suffice.

You guys should compute how much the adaptive seats or the PDCC adds... You will be shocked... I was.

However, the worse is the glass roof. Both in weight and is also reducing the stifness of the car. Big time.

Also the location of the weight matters (roof is worst place, after something that spins or is part of the suspension).

If I remember well the adaptive seats are something like 14kg each?

Re: Sport Auto - Porsche 911 Carrera S vs. 4S (on dry, wet and snow)

Yes, that's what I got too, somewhere between 14 and 16kg per seat. Plus an additional 1kg for the electric engine that is used for adjusting the steering column.

On seats with manual control the steering wheel is adjusted manual too.

AMS measured the 991 Carrera 4S PDK and it is only 0,1 sec faster to both 100 and 200 kph than the manual-version.

I don't think you can compare measurements from a different test with other ones, especially since AMS apparently tested the cars with winter tires and outside their usual testing ground(s).

There is also a 0-200 kph test of the PDK version of the Carrera S where it hits 200 kph in 13.7 seconds or so.

Usually, the PDK version is 0.3 seconds faster from 0-100 kph and up to one second faster to 200 kph. Of course only with Sport Chrono involved and active.

They always measures acceleration/braking with summer tyres - even in winter (0-40 kph in 1,2 s, 100-0 kph under 34 metres in this particular comparison). They use winter tyres for road testing of course.

You are right, AutoZeitung got 13,5 s with the 4S PDK, but unlike AMS they tests with one person onboard on a grippy runway of a German airfield.

Re: Sport Auto - Porsche 911 Carrera S vs. 4S (on dry, wet and snow)

Question : how is Porsche capturing their official numbers ? 3/4 tank and 2 or 1 person ? I mean you can easily measure 2 people with a full tank vs 1 "slim" person with little fuel and have immediately +100 kgs less....
