    Official: BMW M5 Touring launched

    New 5 Series range introduces the ultimate driving estate and brand new efficiency and safety technologies

    BMW has announced details of the revised 5 Series Saloon and Touring range, topped off by the new BMW M5 Touring. From its launch in 2003, the E60 5 Series delivered year-on-year sales records and received numerous accolades. The new 5 Series is set to build on that success with more performance, efficiency, practicality and owner appeal. Offering new engine technology to increase performance yet improve economy by up to 25 per cent, and class-leading comfort-focused equipment such as Lane Departure Warning System, the new 5 Series is set to remain the benchmark Executive car.

    The new BMW M5 Touring

    Powered by the back-to-back International Engine of the Year-winning engine driving through BMW's unique seven-speed Sequential Manual Gearbox, the new M5 Touring offers up to 1,650 litres of boot space for owners needing to move sizeable loads...... quickly.

    Performance

    With the previous M5 Touring (E34) only available in left-hand drive, the arrival of the new M5 Touring marks the first time the high-performance estate has been offered to British customers. Powered by the same normally aspirated 5.0-litre V-10 cylinder engine as its Saloon counterpart, the new M5 Touring redlines at 8,250rpm. 507hp and 520Nm of torque propel the car from zero to 62mph in 4.8 seconds (only 0.1 seconds slower than the Saloon). Without the 155mph electronic limiter the new M5 Touring would be capable of achieving 200mph while still transporting the largest of loads.

    This balance of ultimate practicality and performance is summed up by Lee Connolly, BMW UK's Product Manager for the new M5 Touring "The M5 Touring will be the perfect car for delivering supercar owners' luggage to their holiday homes in France or Spain. Usefully, their luggage will arrive before they do!"

    Transmission

    These levels of performance are in part made possible by the world's first seven-speed Sequential Manual Gearbox with Drivelogic in a production car. The gearbox features eleven different change patterns to offer the driver a personally-tuned driving experience - six settings vary speed and response of gear change in a manual mode and there are five automatic modes. A Launch Control function delivers the fastest possible acceleration from standstill.

    Traction

    Like the Saloon, the new M5 Touring features a three-stage DSC+ traction control system. The default mode offers drivers high levels of performance and stability. M Dynamic Mode allows an enthusiastic driver the ability to push the M5 Touring to, and beyond, the absolute limits of traction, permitting some sideslip and countersteering before the system cuts in and is selected in the M Drive Manager (see below). If the DSC button is pressed, DSC+ is completely disengaged.

    BMW M's variable M differential also offers the highest levels of driving stability and traction, especially when accelerating out of high-speed corners, with up to 100 per cent of drive being transferred to the rear wheel with most traction. Finally, the Electronic Damper Control (EDC) system offers three suspension settings to complement the prevailing driving conditions.

    MDrive Manager packages these programmable settings, so that the touch of a single button sets the car up as required. Like a boy visiting his favourite sweet shop, the M5 driver can select his preferred settings for power, gearbox, EDC and DSC modes, Head-up Display and the degree of Active Seat bolster support, via the iDrive menu. One-touch of the M Drive button on the steering wheel then selects the desired combination and instantly changes the character of the car. One moment the M5 Touring is a placid and practical family car, the next it's more akin to a track day special.

    Exterior design

    Visually, the new M5 Touring follows BMW M's philosophy of high performance shrouded in the body of a standard car with discreet styling enhancements that highlight the potential under the skin. The larger front air dam, side sills, monikered side gills and a rear valance with BMW M's quad tailpipes protruding all hint at the performance of the world's most dynamic estate car.

    Interior

    Internally the new M5 Touring features the same enhancements as the 'standard' 5 Series (see below) as well as offering the Active Seat bolsters from the M5 Saloon. In addition, the Touring variant comes with BMW's innovative iDrive control system with new short cuts - eight freely programmable buttons for instant programme selection. Finally, music aficionados can now specify the BMW Individual High End Audio system that uses 16 loud speakers to generate an ear-ringing 825 watts.

    The new BMW M5 Touring starts production in March 2007 and will be priced at Pounds67,075 on the road.

    Last december, when I heard from a dealer friend that the M5 Touring will be announced soon, I was actually thinking about getting one to replace our Cayenne Turbo Powerkit.
    I ended up with a Cayenne Turbo S for various reasons but the main reason is that my wife doesn't like station wagons. Well...I could have saved some money.

    RC you made a wise choice.. BMW M5 look only good on paper and in specs I actually own M5 and can honestly tell you that this car needs a lot of improvement there is so many issues regarding the " I drive" system , transmission settings and the SMG in general that made this car "slow and annoying " in daily driving comparing to Cayenne TT S, The paddle shifting works well only at above 5500 rpm. and just like with the rally cars you have to drive hard and stay on high rpm..or you not getting anything. That is way my wife can't drive the car., she actually hate it..

    As an M5 owner i understand you dude. Tranny is annoying espcially in city use , and D mode (auto) mode is really annoying especially when you go up hill it upshifts suddenly the car lose torque and suddenly downshifts and then finds its torque. Also in autobahn if you crusing at 120kmh and you wanted to make a sudden attack, you need to downshift 7 to 3. That is also annoying sometimes but not too bad.

    Sometimes I drive it in manuel mod in city use.
    But I-drive. Am i the only one who has no complains about Idrive. I find it better than Audi MMI.

    But except in city use tranny issue the car look me good. IMO city use of Gallardo E-gear is really much annoying than SMG. Maybe that's why i do not have much complains about m5

    But otherwise S5 and S6 mods are really fun. But the gas tank is small and it warns you when the fuel come to 1/4
    I think it need +15L more , 70L is not enough for a v10 car

    If you deciding to replace Cayenne TT with M5 just think one more time for city use comfort, but as total its power and performance will make you smile and its a four door saloon with a nearly supercar performance.

    One more thing last wekend i made a high speeding on autobahn did 270kmh and some parts of the road has curves.
    I do not feel safety when going 270kmh with M5.I am not a expert driver, i am a standart driver but i like doing speeding .The car was feeling to light after 240 and i feel I'd rather to be in Gallardo at 300+km/h , rather than M5 at270kmh

    I just got a Cayenne Turbo S for the family, there is no way I could switch to a M5 Touring now.

    Btw: driving 270 kph in a fully loaded Cayenne Turbo feels pretty stable and safe, you wouldn't believe it. I just love this truck, this is why I went for a second one after our first Cayenne Turbo Powerkit. It offers a lot of space for the family (two little kids) and it is very fast. The perfect family commuter for a family of four, especially if you live in a region with lots of snow in winter time and even more rain during the year.

    Yeah i am sure it is. I ve driven it once (for a week, EDIT: it was C TT not TTS) did 250kph on speedo and pretty stable and safe. The only negative was the wind noise maybe becasue of rail accessorie on the top. But thats normal for a huge car.

    Comparing it to M5 is like comparing apple to oranges , both cars are one of the tops in their section. And they have different type of taste.

    Yes I drive is easy to operate, but at list here in US extremely slow in loading and require a lots of steps to change from one mode to other. IF I'm in navi and wont to go to sat radio I need to go to main menu + entertainment + sat + station. On the Cayenne is just one step and so is on my ML63.When I drive fast I don't like to be disturbed by the factory inconvenience. S5 & S6 the DSG of is the way to go.

    My wife just saw these pics. Instantly her answer was this:

    If someone de-restricts the max speed on this car and carries a dog in the back at 200mph+, the dog will be scared sh*tless and will sh*t itself in the rear of the car. Whoever buys this car had better get ready to clean the poop off the floor...
