    2011 Boxster allready testing

This are the first pictures of the 2011 Boxster mule. From globalmotors.net

    Re: 2011 Boxster allready testing

I'm pleased to see that it still has a soft top, and that it doesn't follow the trend of Mercedes and BMW with their hardtops (SLK & Z4).

    Re: 2011 Boxster allready testing

I'm not sure it's the new one model....maybe a special version of current 987...

    Re: 2011 Boxster allready testing

I believe that we are looking a test mule for the 988, and not a Speedster version of the 987.2.   Note the wheel well bulges to accommodate the wider stance of the new chassis.   I know that it will probably not happen, but I wish that Porsche would showcase the engines of their mid-engines as well as the Audi R8 and Ferrari mid-engines.   Instead of a carpeted cover, I would really like to see an optional plexi-glass panel back there.   Yes, a bit noisier, but would love to see the engine.

    Re: 2011 Boxster allready testing

Are all this round backlights on the mules the new look or are they just bolt on to adhere to traffic regulations?

I'm still undecided if I should like them.

    Re: 2011 Boxster allready testing

Looks good to me, but I don't think they will showcase us the engine, as Porsche always set this car as entre or lower model to 911,  they wouldn't give us something 911 don't have.

    Re: 2011 Boxster allready testing

Remember the lights on the first Panamera mule, they where also rounded. This have nothing to do with how the lights will look on the final model. We still have to wait at least until end of 2009 to start see how the final car may look like.

    Re: 2011 Boxster allready testing

I think it's the same car underneath as the one on the pictures someone posted in the 997 forum.

As RC said it was not the 998 in the other pictures, I thnik it's not the new boxster either. The bonnet is way too high and too long. Might just be a front engine car.

Or maybe I'm so wrong that you guys are going to laugh at me for months.

    Re: 2011 Boxster allready testing

from those pictures, all i'd be willing to believe is that they have tarted up a boxster to give the spy photographers something to spin....

a 4 cyl turbo would require some kind of sound clip to be beleivable, and even that can be faked

    Re: 2011 Boxster allready testing

I have no idea as to what I am looking at.   The roofline seems changed, but other than that it is difficult to see what the 988 will look like.   I am sure the final product will be very enticing and hope that our posters in Germany will be able to snag some great shots as they did with the facelifted 987.2 earlier this year.

    Re: 2011 Boxster allready testing

I have been reading about the 2011 new Boxster (988). Does anyone really believe that this is really the year it will be introduced? It really does not follow the Porsche model change formula? I think the new one will be in 2012 or 13. Most all new models are 7 - 8 year cycles. What are everyone else's thoughts?

    Re: 2011 Boxster allready testing

My thoughts?  I believe that model introduction cycles are shortening, given rapid technological advances and consumer trends.   The 2003 and 2004 facelift for instance on the 986 lasted 2 years, as I believe the 987.2 facelift will last from 2009 to 2010.   I believe that the Valmet/Finland factory will retool for 2 years of production of a new 988 or heavily facelifted 987.3, before switching to the Magna /Austria  factory in 2013.

    Re: 2011 Boxster allready testing

I hope you are right, because I would like to buy a new Boxster / Cayman around 2011. I am not going to buy a 987.2 I just don't think the changes are significant enough to justify a change although I will never say never. I do think it is a strange business decision to switch factories 2 years into a new model. That seems expensive. We shall see! Smiley

A very good point. I'm suprised to see people already commenting on the looks of what is only a very early test mule. Anything can still happen between now and the new 988, including a really bad financial crisis that might force Porsche to cut costs and produce a car that's very different to the on they're currently planning. Look how fast things have been changing in the car industry lately.

And even if the current course is kept, this mule is probably very far removed from what the finished product will look like.

yes it will be strange to let those holes as the final light units! And I was also surprised about the comments just because we have all seen a lot of pictures with camouflaged prototypes.

    Re: 2011 Boxster allready testing

On the pic in which you can see the filler cap, it seems like the front wheel arches/fenders are way above the real fenders. It seems that you can see the real fender beneath it. Or is this just my mind playing games with me?

Completley agree. A ST looks much more sportier. Further on, it reduces the head weight!

    Re: 2011 Boxster allready testing

If you look at the sidemirrors, you'll see that they are mounted on the door skin and not on the a pillar corner (a la panamera).

I believe that Porsche are testing a new rearview camera system that will allow them to eliminate sideview mirrors .

You'll see similar lenses inside the rear bumper of test mules skinned with other Porsche body styles.

    Nice shot Misha.

Those vents look different for sure but interesting nontheless.

The gauge cluster has 5 readings/housing same as 911.

    Re: 2011 Boxster allready testing

Thanks Misha, looks like the gear lever might be positioned higher, kind of a cross between the current Boxster  and Carerra GT.

    Re: 2011 Boxster allready testing

I don´t know if I like that high central console. The Porsche cars never had it so tall. It is more luxurious than sporty to my eyes.

    Re: 2011 Boxster allready testing

Also they say that in the next Boxster and 911 the manual gearbox will be diched in favour of the PDK and a new CVT gearbox. But on his interior there is a manual gearlever!

"Otherwise, engines are likely to remain unchanged from the newly launched direct injection units in the new Boxster, with a 255bhp 2.9 in the base car and 310bhp 3.4 in the Boxster S."

A new model with the engines unchanged? Was this written by some intern at Evo?
