    Boxsters with Cayman-engines

German carmag "Autozeitung" (issue of 8 Febr.) reports as follows (I take no responsibility for any mistakes with my translation ):

"Porsche amends his Cayman program by the end of 2006 with the 2.7 L base Boxster engine with HP increased to 250 HP.
Boxster S will be equipped with the 295 HP engine of Cayman S."

I don't feel competent to judge whether it's just the usual carmag's gossip or whether the statement is based on proper reserach (AZ does not mention a source, but the statement is written in a fashion able to create the impression of an "official" announcement).

In theory the statement makes sense considering the following aspects:

    > harmonization of Boxster/Cayman engine programs = economies of scale

    > engine upgrade two years after first launch of 987 models seem to follow the common Porsche time schedule for upgrades

    > Timing fits especially into the German market, as cars will become more expensive from January 2007 anyway due to VAT-rise (+3%); also launch of 3.4 L engine at the end of the year would not let too many prospective buyers hold back their order, as they would "loose" a complete top-down season.

    AZ says nothing about pricing.

    My thoughts:
    > If 987 sales would be below budget at the end of 2006, only moderate price increase to vitalize Boxster Sales

    > If sales are within or above budget, Cayman-pricing will be used as a Trojan horse to generally lift Boxster prices to a higher level (remember discussions about the price gap between Boxster S and Cayman S perceived as "too big" - Porsche's marketing genius may "resolve" the problem by increasing Boxster prices, if sales for both models Boxster and Cayman would be within budget ) - my speculation: approximately 3,000 Euro price increase in Germany for 987 S (current gap CaymanS/BoxsterS 6,500 Euro )

0.2 L more displacement + 15 additional ponies would not propell Boxster S into another league, but Variocam Plus maybe the selling argument for a price increase (better torque, broader usable RPM-range).

    Re: Boxsters with Cayman-engines

I'm still not sure if the Boxster S really gets the Cayman S engine, it wouldn't make selling the Cayman S easier. And I don't get the feeling that the Cayman S is a huge success in Germany, the second largest market for Porsche. But maybe they sell enough cars to the US and other markets to be happy with the results?!

The 3% tax raise in Germany is really a problem for lots of car makers over here, you may be right that making some products slightly more attractive may be a good sales argument, like for example: "we have a 3% tax increase but you actually get more for your money because we improved power, etc. etc.". Let's wait and see what happens.

    Re: Boxsters with Cayman-engines

For me I've ordered a 06 987S and will be coming in 2months, and the above news won't deter me from getting a 06 model. The difference with the 3.4 engine after a test drive I would say tangible but small, and that's exactly why I didn't order a Cayman S and to enjoy some open-top fun with the Boxster. Also as said above a slight change in spec would spike up the price tag.

With the closer collaboration with VW, for me the ideal upgrade would be to add FSI technology to the Boxer 6 engine, with FSI the engine might be gutsier by another 20-30hp and at the same time more fuel efficient. Current Boxer engines are sweet but sort of lacking output when comparing engines with similar displacements by other makes. Also change the power steering pump from mechanical to electric, this would free up another several valuable HP, and I've tried several VW and Hondas with electric power steering pump, basically all for the better. Third would be 6speed PDK or DSG, whatever name they would like to call it.

With these 3 upgrades, I would certainly rush to the dealer and drop them my cheque to have the 1st in town! But for now I am anxiously wait for my 06 987S...

Same feelings here - though trying to beat you with a prospected pick-up scheduled for end of March

Also agree with you, that the 3.4 L engine most probably does not provide that much performance difference (at least not enough to postpone an order sacrifying the upcoming topdown season) - not to speak about any potential price increases. I understand your "wish-list", but don't see this coming soon

So stay brave for the remaining wait-time and enjoy your baby

    Re: Boxsters with Cayman-engines

Gee the wait is killing me!!!!!!!!

Well one more wishlist to Porsche, hope their next generation of Variocam plus can be more advanced, now only offer a 2 stage valve lift and hope the next generation the lift can be infinitely variable just like Bimmer's vanos.

Congrats Porsche-Jeck, what color is yours?

    RC,

Whatever Porsche makes we buy . So as you said it could be a big success only in U.S. .

Based on what the dealer told me they can't even keep them in the lot they're flying out of there.

    Re: Boxsters with Cayman-engines

This is also where you can routinely see a single person commute to work in a 9 passenger suburban, or H2 Hummer, so there's definitely precedent for Americans having some odd ideas about what constitutes adequate transportation.

    Re: Boxsters with Cayman-engines

Yeah the other day I met an Energy specialist from the US and he came to talk about alternative energy sources, the funny thing is, at the end of the meeting I asked him what kind of car he drives on a daily basis and he said well it's somekind of 5.7liter V8 SUV.....

So hope Porsche can launch the Caynenne Hybrid very soon... that would be nice, 4.5 V8 + 2 electric motors, might be as fast as the turbo without gulping as much gasoline!

Yes, the irony is the closer pick-up day comes, the worse it gets but for you at least HK offers lots of distractions whereas I don't know how to cure the winter depression with this fugly wheather

My baby will come in sealgrey/cocoa/cocoa. Has been pure torture to resolve the colour dilemma - not to talk about the other options - but it will be all good very soon now

    Re: Boxsters with Cayman-engines

Cool Porsche-Jeck, but since my friend ordered his C4S in Seal Grey + Terra Cotta so I picked Arctic silver.

In HK showroom, there's a nice 987S in white + Terra Cotta, really nice but I guess a bit girlish and will be kinda hard to keep it white in the longer term.

Yeah I should go look for some distractions tonight...

I wouldn't be at all surprised to see this happen. Need to agree with you though, it makes the premium for the Cayman a more difficult sell.
