    Wheel spacers

    I posted a question about wheel spacers on the 996 board, but it seems a bit dead so I will try here...

    I am looking for new wheels and my dealer told me that for pracically all of them (18") I need spacers (17 mm) on the rear axle (I have a 996 4S). As I have no experience with spacers I would like to ask those who have if I should be worried, i.e. does the car's handling change, etc.

    I have factory 5mm spacers all around on my C4S Cab (19" S wheels) and it's perfect, IMO. I wouldn't want them any wider. However, with 18s you may want to go a bit wider: 7mm on the front and possibly 11mm on the rear ? I believe 17mms are a bit too wide, especially on the front.

    No noticed difference in handling.

    I was told I need the 17mm just on the rear axle and no spacers on the front axle. Reason being that the wheels on the rear axle have a different ET than what the car expects... that's what I've been told

    I would check ..hopefully there's a dealer close by, with cars with spacers, so you can see for yourself. I thought the 17mms looked too wide, but that was with 19" wheels.

    Go to www.1010tire.com and use their wheel offset calculator to see how stock compares to what you want to put on. It will tell you inside clearance and how far out (or in)the wheels will be from stock. Great tool.
