    Re: Audi R8 new model

Porsche just won Le Mans with hydraulic steering in the 919 (and all the racing 911's had it too).  Fuel economy (and fewer pit stops) was an important part of their strategy.  If EPS was a benefit, they would've used it.

I LOVE IT, looks like a great package and a nice evolution (looks wise). Mechanically it will shred.

as much as I try to like it - resale always comes to my mind here in CH all the time and they are horrible - previous model goes 50% in NO time..... - I hope for Audi the new will not have the same fate.

I am seriously thinking about getting an "old" V10 Plus but so far, the prices are still too high in my opinion. I may consider one again, with low mileage (under 30k km), when prices drop below 70k EUR. If they drop.

In the US, they have very good retained value - a used V8 model was worth $100k for years (not anymore, unless very recent low-mile example).

I agree with you Christian, The old V10 plus is the one to get. It's almost identical mechanically and it's a lot prettier. I find the new design too aggressive and angular, and they got rid of those signature sideblades that looked really cool on the original one.

    Re: Audi R8 new model

    François,

New R8 is far, far from been mechanically identical with old R8. New AWD, new steering,  new suspension layout, new Alu/CF hybrid frame. Only mid engine layout and overall shape are the same.

    Re: Audi R8 new model

Some new interesting reviews up! I got to admit that I really really like it! The new R8 is actually on top of my wishlist if I had to choose a among R8 and it's competitors.

Then old model v10 spider would be a bargain.

Seriously speaking; I have been always a big fan of R8, had driven both V8 and V10. I always find the V8 little underpowered but love the V10 Spider.

Now the new V10+ is a great package. Have every options I would ever need for this kind sports car except sport exhaust, magnetic ride and alcantara headliner. I even liked the 19" diamond finish no cost option wheels more than the extra cost 20" wheels.

If I were to sell my 458 tomorrow, V10+ would be the number 1 car on my list to look at. Or even better choice would be to buy an old model V10 spider without selling the 458.

Everything aside, I apploud Audi for keeping the N/A engine instead of going for the turbo route. Smiley

    Seriously?? SmileySmiley

I'm usually a big Audi fan, but I've seen the car in the metal this week in Porto Cervo, where it was on display and I was not impressed at all. Despite looking quite a lot like t he old one, they've made it way uglier. And the car is not special by any means, which I find important if I'd spent that amount of money on a car. It's not an exotic and suffers from the same issues as an upper range 911. I would always take the Huracan or a 488 over the new R8 or an upper range 911 for that matter...

Suzy, you are a  person of impeccable taste so I cannot dispute your preferences Smiley

However, I find the new Audi a more coordinated design than the original. I like the chunky front and the more pronounced slope to the rear which allude to the legendary Auto Union racers. I also like the new blade design together with the sculpture of the doors. In a technical colour with matching blades this car would appear even better than in the launch colours.

The Huracan is an exquisite Lamborghini design but impractical for normal use.

The Ferrari admittedly defines this class of sportscar and for most it is the default choice. But I cannot see why Audi's engineering prowess in road cars and in racing cars leaves anything to be desired compared to Ferrari. And the days of the beautiful classic Ferrari shapes are over; they have strong presence but the designs are not admirable like in the past.

I can also imagine than on a real world route with all sorts of road and weather abnormalities thrown in the R8 V10 Plus would give the 488 a very hard time.

    Re: Audi R8 new model

Not sure what's not exotic about it. If you own one you'll notice you get just as much attention as any V8 Ferrari or V10 Lamborghini. Is it the most exotic looking? No, but lots of super expensive "exotics" are pretty tame. It also sounds about 100x better than the 488.

If you don't like the looks at all, then I guess nothing will change your mind, but 9 out of 10 times someone offered the keys to an R8 or a high-end 911 will always go for the R8. The R8 has been proven to be a very successful car.

Value is of course dependent on where you live. It's better than the Huracan and in the US it's probably anywhere from $60-100K cheaper than a Huracan/488, and you don't have to jump through any hoops whatsoever. Can walk into a dealer order any car with any options at MSRP all day, every day, and the options are waaaay cheaper. Compare PTS on an R8 with a 488/Huracan. Is a 488's special-ness worth $100K more than an R8? Maybe, but you can just make the same argument that an Aventador's special-ness is worth $100K more than a 488.

There's little point in saying a car that's vastly more expensive is more "worth it."

    Re: Audi R8 new model

There's no doubt that the new R8 is a really good car and indeed much more suited for daily use, although I'm pretty sure that the 488 can be an equally good daily driver, except for really bad conditions maybe. The thing is, I would never buy such car for daily use, but as a weekend toy. And for that, a car needs to 'feel' special to me. I don't care about the attention that I'll get with a car. It also has nothing to do with its pricetag or performance, but with the overall feeling a car gives me. The R8 doesn't feel special to me when looking at it (the old one didn't either). The Huracan was also on display in Porto Cervo and that car has so much more presence (admittedly, the color helped too... It was dark blue metallic and the Audi very ugly pale red-ish). Anyway... I simply didn't like the Audi, but I did like the Huracan a lot. What I did like on the R8 is its new interior, but even that doesn't look as good (designwise) as the interior of the new TT for example.

The value of a car, isn't measured by pure numbers. At least, not for me. Don't care if the Huracan is more expensive and maybe technically inferior to the R8. To me it's worth at least double the price of an R8, simply because I wouldn't pay that price for an R8, while I would, in that case,  be tempted to pay the Huracan's price for the Huracan. In contrary... With Porsche it's the other way around. In my opinion, no 911 is even worth half its price, while for me the Boxster is worth double its price. But that's just my personal view....

Having said all that... I don't want any of those "supercars". Not an R8, not a Huracan, not a 488 and certainly not an upper range 911. I'm pretty sure that none of them would offer me a huge amount more fun than I can have with my current Boxster, so none of these cars are actually worth their money to me. If there's any "exotic" that I'm interested in, it would be the Cali T, which suits my needs a lot more, but it couldn't replace the Boxster. Would be a nice addition though.

That depends on your market. They barely get a glance here as there are so many of them. Speaking as an ex R8 owner mine only garnered attention due to it's unusual Exclusive colour.

The definition of conspicuous consumption. Buying a luxury product such as a sportscar for others to see in an attempt to enhance one's prestige.

Not that someone like ISUK would engage in  such a practice but as a general rule.

This is the "old" Spider and the price tag is quite "ambitious" to say at least.

The interior is way too elegant and reminds me a little bit of Bentley, not my cup of tea. This is a R8, not a Bentley. Smiley
