    Why so negative? Smiley

Just the fact that Lotus has survived so long borders on a miracle, it is one of very few companies building real sportscars, and the automotive "world" would be distinctly poorer if Lotus no longer existed.

I haven't warmed up to the looks and I don't think I ever will, but it looks like Lotus has come out with another amazing chassis and handling car.

What scares me is that given the automotive climate and recession, I wonder if this may be one those products that sinks the company not because anything wrong with the car - but simply because of the wrong timing.

...the only thing stopping you in all likelihood, is you!

Re: Fifth Gear drives the Evora

I like the looks of the car, although I'll probably like the looks of the revised one better. Smiley

The fact that Lotus remains an independent and dedicated sports car company ranks it very highly in my mind. Lotus = driver's car. ...The fact that I can't say that about Porsche and *all* of its cars bothers me.

Lotus isn't quite independent. It's owned by Proton of Malaysia.

Re: Fifth Gear drives the Evora

I guess you're right, ISUK. Well at least it looks as though Proton leaves Lotus alone to do what it does best. The company reminds me of Porsche back in the 80-90's -pre 986 and 996 era. That was when I fell in love with Porsche cars.

Don't get me wrong, I appreciate the Lotus marque, its racing heritage and its automotive purity.

I just don't like these mini-exotic looks of the Evora. IMO the original Elise was a successful minimalist design and they should build of that style. The recent imitation-exotic styles remind me more of kit cars than Chapman purity.

There seems to be a degree of nostalgia as regards older Porsches and people tend to idealize them. The truth is those cars, although charming due to their smaller size and better proportions were rubbish and overpriced compared to the 986 onwards.

I had an air-cooled 911 and when I got a 986S in 2000 the difference was huge in every respect, without any loss of enjoyment.  I sold the 911 to a friend who is an excellent driver and classic car enthusiast, who in turn replaced it with a 996 4S. His comment was" I never realised up till now how much I was putting my life in danger with the old 911".

People tend to look at bygone automobile eras with fondness and they like to speak of purity in cars, but when they have to pay for a product they choose the most modern one. That's why Lotus only manage to sell a handful of cars every year in spite of their chassis brilliance.

...I thought the reason is more like how folks choose their wives. Hmm, should I go with the sexy one that does one thing really well, or do I go with the cute one that plays two sports, knows three languages and does comedy on the side? Smiley

reginos, how would you design the Evora then? I don't think that it looks "too" exotic by any means! It's a pure Lotus design and the car was meant to fit the niche between the Elise/Europa variants and the upcoming Esprit. Maybe you get a false impression of the car by seeing these photos? The car looks very nice in real! ...IMO at least.

I only hope that the Evora will sell well, Lotus needs the money in order to fund the development of the Esprit!!

Re: Fifth Gear drives the Evora

Personally, I would prefer a simpler and cleaner design, a development of the original Elise that was closer to the golden era of Lotus (Elan, Elan +2 ,original Europa etc.) Judging from the pictures it borrows too many typical supercar styling cues and ends up somewhat overdesigned.

Of course it is only my personal taste and I must say that I haven't had a chance to see the new car yet except from pictures.
