    Rally driver injures 7 spectators

     and continues the race:

Re: Rally driver injures 7 spectators

As a former rallye pilot, I think this guy was an idiot BUT it wasn't his fault. He just did the wrong thing after it happened.

Rallye racing spectators are mostly idiots, some of them can even be called retarded. Why retarded ? Well...would you stay that close to the street/track if you know what can happen if a car looses control ?

Part of rallye racing is drifting, steering with your throttle foot and trying to turn around a curve without actually braking. Things can go wrong, this is why there was and is always a warning to stay FAR away from the street/track to avoid situations like the one seen in the video.

While I think that the driver is an idiot because he continued his race, the spectators were even more idiots and got what they deserved, as harsh as this might sound.

For me as a driver it was always very stressful to see those spectators along the street/track because, if I wanted or not, they slowed me down. I'm a sentient being, I'm human, so I always drove slightly less fast than I actually could.

I never understood these spectators, they can watch this from 20-30 m away, why do they need to stay one meter away from a sliding 1 ton object ? Just plain stupid, sorry.

Re: Rally driver injures 7 spectators

I agree RC, the spectators are stupid and also those who allowed them to be there. The spinout is something that can happen to every driver, sometimes you have to increase the risks to gain an advantage.

But continuing the race after hitting this crowd? As you said, drivers are sentient beings, and as a sentient being you should have stopped racing and at least check if you can help.

What do you think: is driving out of the crowd in that situation a good idea or causing more harm than good?

Re: Rally driver injures 7 spectators

the guy is doing his job....racing.

the spectators are being well........downright stupid standing on the outside apex.

from a professional point of view, he did the right thing. i.e. continue racing as it was not his fault.

from a humane standpoint it's wrong of him to continue racing and not stop to check the people.

it's not that black or white i think....

Re: Rally driver injures 7 spectators

Personally, I would have been devastated if something like that would have happened to me. I remember that I once applied the brake too late and although the street pavement was dry asphalt, the car started to slide because the other cars ahead me had carried a lot of dirt/sand and "lost" it on the pavement, making it very slippery. I didn't expect it and I was sliding with around 20-30 kph towards a woman holding a camera in her hand. Luckily, I did the right thing and reduced brake pressure, so I was able to avoid her by around one to two meters but it was close in my opinion and afterwards I was good to give up the race because of the shock. I drove very slowly afterwards, coming in 16th (!) in a group of twenty cars. In the first two parts (it happened after the third checkpoint), I was on 7th place.

I just HATE this dumb spectators because I just can't completely ignore them. Like I said, I'm human. Maybe this is why this wasn't the right sport for me. Smiley Smiley

intouch, there was no way for him to know that nobody was pinned under the car. He could have killed someone by driving away.

Re: Rally driver injures 7 spectators

There are no areas of grey here - you hit someone, you stop to see if they're okay or in need of help....full stop..!!
