    Re: 997S!!!

congrats, Is it your first porshce?

    Re: 997S!!!

Yes it is.Took the leap from an '01 M3.

    Re: 997S!!!

Congrats. Im thinking about doing the same thing, going from an 03' M3 which is definately a leap.. Curious how much of a differece there is in performance between the two cars. Let us know when you get it..

    Re: 997S!!!

Thanks! When I went for a test drive, there was a definite difference at the low and mid-range RPM's. As for the high end, I'll let you know when I get there.

    Re: 997S!!!

you will find a very high proportion of 911 drivers that graduated from m3's.
it's a great starter car, performance wise, but not a p-car
never heard of anyone going back to an m3 from a 911

Statement premature. The next generation M3 will boast a V8 with 400-440 bhp on tap. Look out Porschephiles.

Sure seems to be a lot of BMW drivers here. Congrats Nicholas J.

    Re: 997S!!!

well you are all right in this i think its difficult to go backwards to a M3 althought the new versions will be fearing tempted.
I just hope porsche comes out with a magical upgrade kit!!

    Re: 997S!!!

I thought about waiting for the new M3, but from the pictures I've seen, the interior, especially the dash, looks pretty much the same. Most importantly, I've never had a Porsche, drove a friends and that was it.No complaints with the '01 M3. I enjoyed every minute.

    Re: 997S!!!

well nick a Porsche is a Porsche, no word on that

    Re: 997S!!!

This is the worse part of taking delivery.....

    Re: 997S!!!

I look at the M3 kinda like I look at the Mustang Cobra. It's a whale of a performer, but you're paying alot of dough for a car with extremely pedestrian roots. It's a hot-rodded grocery getter. Now of course the M3 is an extremely WONDERFULLY EXECUTED AND ENGINEERED piece, but I still can never get around the fact that it's still 80% 3-series. A Porsche 911 is purpose-built and engineered from top to bottom. An M3 is a transformer car, transformed into its purpose. And believe me, that's a COMPLIMENT to BMW, because I've done road-course laps in an '04 M3, and it's an amazing accomplishment and an amazing machine.

    Re: 997S!!!

Thanks fellow members. I felt real good before and I feel GREAT now. Nothing like words of encouragement from the experts who are " in the know ", and not the Cadillac salesman who said I was making the "misake of a lifetime" by not choosing their new " USA made rocketship".

    Re: 997S!!!

I got to drive the CTS-V on the same track day I did the M3, and it's an impressive track car once you figure out how to disable all of the electronic suspension and traction nannies, which are extremely intrusive when on. After that, it was an impressive drive. But too plasticky/cheapie inside for a car that pricey. Cadillac has a long way to go educating its dealer network. The dealer owner who provided the CTS-V at the track event I was at was not letting people drive the car "until the brakes stop smelling". We all laughed at him, and after an hour or two, he figured out that all of the other cars provided at the event, from Lambo to Dodge Neon, were being hammered non-stop, brakes glowing-red-hot, and realized that he better loosen up his nylon tie a bit..LOL

The proposed styling of the new E90 M3 (400+hp) makes me queasy. I try to like the looks of that car and just can't. There's no way I would buy that car just because it looks so frickin trendy and frilly

    Re: 997S!!!

nicholas to what car he was reffering to ?Which model of cadillac he said you should buy?

Not that it matters because any model of cadilac man is way more down that Porsche. Just pass by the dealer with you carrera and he ll break in tears

    Re: 997S!!!

He referred to the CTS-V, and I share the same analogy as 69, too much plastic and GM feel. I didn't drive it, just stopped for a few minutes at closing time. I wasn't impressed at all. I think it was Automoblle Magazine who said it looked a " high school drawing gone bad." Hey MMD, GREAT pictures of the old and new.I share your sentiment and believe I made the right decision.

BMW may put 1000 bhp in their cars... they will become equally more heavy...
Enjoy the lightness of a porsche... And not 1000BHP in a BMW can provide the vibes of driving a porsche...
I drove a lot of fast cars but the 997S cabrio will be my 4th porsche and you know why???

Absolutely - they should stick to 6 cyls. I expect the V8 will make them more AMG like which is a shame. More torque doesn't mean better. The M3 is very entertaining to drive because you have to find the power band from 5000-8500 revs and when you it rewards you.

More torque low down = less driver involvement.

The CSL is the best car BMW ever made.
