REALZEUS:
You really like that sound? It's a pathetic fart compared to the shrieky hell that the N/A engines of the 90s, 00s and 10s produce IMHO.

FERRARI RULES!!!
How could YOU like anything about that time, Ferrari couldn't go 10 laps w/o a fire, that explains your comment.
I saw these in person (and on TV), in 1984 & 85 at Montreal they had the 3 liter N/A Ford Cosworth in the Tyrrell (driven by Brundle and Bellof) running the race alongside all the Turbo's so I could hear both sounds in comparison to one another. I like both, but the compared to the 1200BHP Turbo the weaker, whinier N/A engine can NOT compare.
Those turbos were much deeper, much stronger sounding engines AND louder, plus the explosion on every upshift. No Match in person.
Watch the excitement and listen to the reaction of Lewis Hamilton when they let him drive Senna's Mclaren Tag Turbo on Top Gear.

It's a fact that the N/A engines are louder (I am not talking about the particular Cosworths). The decibel metre does not lie. Compare a Ferrari/Honda N/A V12 to the same manufacturer's V6 turbo and you will see what I mean. Anyway, we will have those bloody turbos back in 2014 and then we will all weep for the passing of the high revving N/A engines.
Are there decibel readings from trackside in 1986? I will agree that the N/A "shriek" more, its a much higher pitch which is extra tough on the ears, but the deepness and strength of the Turbo was "felt". Even the Ferrari's sounded great.
In fact that was first direct personal experience with F1. I was crossing the pedestrian bridge to get into the center of the circuit Gilles Villneuve on Isle Notre Dame early in Thursdays practice session in 1984 just as Rene Arnoux came blasting down the strait in his Ferrari. It shook everything.
I was watching the Brundle lap around Silverstone above from 08 and he never got the revs or boost up very far on that track even with him as an experienced F1 driver. So it will tough to ever get the sound experience of a 1986 qualifying session with full boost and 1200+ bhp. The video below is a very recent one with the 86 Lotus running detuned to 500-600 bhp level. But you can still hear the power/scream of the engine as it goes by and yet the people taking these vids claim the recording does not do it justice.
@2:13 here and the very end, great vid
another great little vid from Goodwood the color which is different in person
WOW -- HD footage with the Williams Honda's and great sound. This is amazing video of 3 great 80's era F1 cars being run now by Honda in Japan and filmed in HD. Spectacular stuff to see these cars so clearly for the first time since seeing them in person.
@1:30 pulling out
