    DTM 2009 - Hockenheim I

    This weekend it's going to happen, the DTM season 2009 will start in Hockenheim/Germany.

    You can see that Jamie Green has been degraded to a 2008 car, in favor of Ralf Schumacher who now drives a 2009 car.

    I think that decision was based on marketing and not on driving skills. Green finished 4th overall last year (and as 2nd Mercedes), certainly no reason to deny him one of the four 2009 cars.

    Audi was more conservative, they did not change their top drivers.

    What a start into the DTM season.

    Today was quite a sad day for Mercedes and especially Norbert Haug.

    No Mercedes made it to the newly introduced 4th qualifying round with 4 cars. The irony is, that this 4th qualifying was initially proposed by Mercedes. Best Mercedes today was Paul DiResta (P6) and Maro Engel (P7).
    Of course the 4 Audi drivers had more fuel in Q4, therefore Ekström is on P1 with 1:32.535, whereas Di Resta is on P6 with 1:32.456.

    After an eventful race with lots of crashes, Audi was able to drive home a quadruple win. Congratz!

    Ekström (Audi) lost a tire 2 laps before finish, Timo Scheider (Audi) turned off the car just after the finish line. According to the rules you have to drive to parc fermee and there needs to be a minimum amount of fuel remaining.

    They pushed him to parc fermee, let's see if he has enough fuel left to remain on P2 (he says it's enough)

    Actually, that might make things even worse. Smiley

    Think about it. A team which almost got closed down a month before is given a Mercedes engine which it has to adapt its car to, and it then goes on to beat the whole field.  Smiley

    In reality, Brawns success with a Mercedes engine means that McLarens failure is due to bad management. Not exactly what Haug wants to communicate.

    It could be interpreted that way.

    I'm more inclined to think that McLaren and Ferrari have suffered severely at the start of this season from interpreting the diffusor rule differently to Brawn, and McLaren's management has been too heavily involved in FIA politics since then as an indirect result, leaving too little  time and capacity to manage the technical side of catching up with Brawn.
