    Optimum RPM range for performance?

At what RPM is it best to shift? Are you supposed to keep the engine revved higher than max torque point (4600rpm on the S) or around the max HP (6600rpm)

Sorry if this is a basic question, but I'm just wondering how do you apply the data (HP and Torque peak) to driving.

    Thanks!

Re: Optimum RPM range for performance?

You want to maximize the horsepower when you drive (for acceleration). This does not mean to shift at horsepower peak, since doing this will cause you to "land" well below the horsepower peak after shifting into a higher gear. In general, shift at or near redline...

Re: Optimum RPM range for performance?

Grant here is another basic question. On a 6speed C2S what would be a good rpm to drive around in? If I am just cruising or in traffic should I shift @ 3500 rpm or would it be a strain on the engine to keep it there in second or third for extended period of time? Sometimes I shift bellow 3000 but I feel as if the engine likes it better by the 4000 mark.

Re: Optimum RPM range for performance?

I think the engine speed is supposed to be no lower than 1,500rpm at any time (other than idling in neutral), but I think 2,500rpm is a realistic minimum for very gentle cruising on level (or downhill) ground. I think 3,000 to 3,500 is where I'm most comfortable just cruising on the highway and I'd keep it over 5k all the time if you're driving with gusto...

Re: Optimum RPM range for performance?

    Thanks grant

Re: Optimum RPM range for performance?

Just to add to Grant's advice, look at Tiptronic Porsches, Audis, etc., they all shift at redline if in sport mode.

Re: Optimum RPM range for performance?

I also have a question for u team..

Regarding the optimal take-off for a 997S, at what revs should it be taken to in stand still before dropping the clutch in ?? (assuming normal road surface & weather etc)

& is there anything else technique-wise that one should know to get the fastest possible take-off out of the car ??

Your advise would be much appreciated (& put to very good use indeed)

Re: Optimum RPM range for performance?

I recommend not trying for a fast take-off. The faster methods are very hard on the car (unless you have a Tip).

Re: Optimum RPM range for performance?

Obviously i won't be taking off fast all the time but it is something that i would like to utilise when tracking & the like.

I bought a performance car & would like to experience the full extent of its performance once in a while...

or maybe i should have gone for that '89 datsun i've always dreamed of...

I dont even own the car and i can tell you how to do this.

Feel it out. Build it up little by little. You cant exactly have a set rule for everyone to follow. You know your car better than anyone else.

Re: Optimum RPM range for performance?

    @kahnsdad

take a look on the power chart of your engine.
for the 997 and the 997 S Engine I would recommend to shift short before the 7300 rpm mark. otherwise the rpm in the next higher gear is below the level where the vario cam does not allow full filling of the engine.
This also means, if your rpm goes below 4500 to 4000, you should shift to the next lower gear to be upon 5200 rpm when accelerating again.
If you try this a little bit on a winding road, this becomes easyly a flow and driving is a real pleasure.
downshifting to the first gear just makes sense in my opinion when accelerating from very tight corners, so it's better to drive the 2nd gear with a lower rpm in this case. otherwise the power in the first gear is too much when accelerating full out of a curve to keep the wheels on track.

    best regards,
    frank

You don't need fast take off while tracking, do you? Unless drag racing or real racing...

Anyway, the fastest take off is launch with the rpm that generates some wheel spin, but not much, to overcome the initial traction. I never try it, but should be around 4-4.5k rpm.

Launching not even close to full extent.

Optimum RPM range for STREET USE?

IMO, the engine has so much HP/Tq that, for street driving, you can pretty much just leave the sucker in 3rd and drive.

The large amount of HP/Tq means it is really hard to lug the engine so there's minimal low-end rpm concerns.

Here's what I believe is the bottom line:

The six gears, big HP/Tq are installed in our cars to RACE AROUND A TRACK WITH LOTS OF TURNS really fast.

IOW, the engine/tranny (355hp/6 speed) are totally overkill for street driving and you can pretty much accelerate and shift any way you want.

I'm just an amateur, so correct me if I'm wrong.

Re: Optimum RPM range for STREET USE?

    This thread perplexes me...

If you're tracking or driving hard, you shift just a whisker short of redline.

If you're looking just for spirited performance in most driving situations, you don't need to ask anybody, you just need to tune-in to what you're feeling seat-of-the-pants, to how your car responds to inputs. Your Porsche is talking to you, showing you where it's power band is. The meaty part of the tach where it's fun to dip into the gas is easy to find by experimenting, and listening to your body. Driving well means driving intuitively and adjusting/reacting to feedback you get thoughout your body, not asking somebody for clinical instructions.. Every time you press the gas pedal, the car communicates the results. So why ask people to answer questions that your car can easily serve up the answers to?

I'm told the best hard launches are achieved at 4,000-4,500 rpm..

I find the car is comfortable anywhere above 2,000 rpm for just cruising. There's no point driving around town hollering at 4,000+ rpm. What you're looking for is a reasonable gear allowing an rpm that the car feels able to maintain speed effortlessly at, without hearing the drone of lugging when you need to accelerate. Any more, and you're just wasting gas. Downshift when it's time to squirt.

Don't drive your car like you're programming the time and date on your DVD player.
