    Lack of responses to threads, and of new threads

    Bonjour,

    It seems that the redesign of this web was followed by decreases in interesting  and numerous threads. IF I failed to check in once a week, I was 'behind'....not now. Ideas on this from everyone including the moderators  would be welcme.

    There are many 'members' who have bought series II 911s, from ownership of 2005+ 911s or Boxters/Cayman, and I recollect  few if any remarks on the new engine [changes in drivability etc etc]; on PASM generation II [significantly improved/modified from the 2005 design] characteristics affecting low and high speeds on rough or smooth surfaces; on the PDK from a truly   objective view point [ typically we have heard nothing but positives on the PDK , whereas there are weaknesses e.g. jerkiness/kluncking at  low speed , irregular throttle response depending upon gear engaged, mode chosen];  the drain of the battery compared with the 2005 Series I. 

    I will conribute my thoughts on these questions when the thread develops, but I re-ordered/traded my 2011 for the same model [within 3000km] with different options...that car is much more enjoyable and complete.

    To address your first issue; yes, there seems to have been a certain decrease, however, at the moment the entire community seems to be holding its' breath for the introduction of the 991. Therefore, everything seems to be a bit quiet, and only speculation about the 997.2 GT3 rs 4.0 and Pilot 's and John H's recent threads about their new cars seem to draw the old-fashioned kind of attention. No worries, things will get better!

    With respect to your second question; no, there is no better Porsche web. In my opinion, there is no other forum that has such a high level of owners who are also enthusiasts, rather than either 17yo kids or owners who just like to show off.

    Looking forward to your threads with respect to technical/driveability issues, since I myself are not yet in the position to afford a 911, it's always nice to read about the real life issues of driving a supersportscar.

    I don't think it has much to do with the the intro of RT.2 and more so with the global crisis and the mature stage of the 997 series. If i remember correct our 991 thread is way bigger than the 997 one was prior to its intro... Like Joost, said we're just holding our breath! People are working more and finances are tight all over...

    Don't worry lots of good things to come to talk about... 991, new boxster, 918, 929 etc.

    indeed shifting is ancient technology - so is a fuel burning engine..  I happen to like both :)

     I have written quite a few times about my PDK in previous threads, and if you find them you will see that my comments are very different then what you suggest has been written. I remember also a few comments of unhappy owners of PDK.

    We also spoke about the new engine , and PASM has also been discussed.

    Maybe you do not check in RT enough regularly

    @KiwiCanuck: Alan, thanks for your post - but I must say that I don't share your perception. There has been a lot of discussion on a great many new models since the migration some years ago to RT2.0 so I'm surprised that you think this way. In fact, the list is so long that I can't list them all but some notable new Porsche models are 918 Spyder, 997 GT2 RS, 997 TTS PDK, 997 Speedster, 997 Carrera GTS, 911 Sport Classic ... all of these and many more have been discussed in considerable detail.

    Regarding the 991, the thread is huge - every aspect of that car is being discussed with a fine toothcomb and photoshop

    And then there are models from all the other marques: Lamborghini Aventador, Ferrari 458 Italia, McLaren MP4-12C etc.

    As for Porsche technology, there have, for example, been a wide range of views expressed on PDK. Some love it - others hate it and there are many with a love/hate relationship. So your view that there have been nothing but positives on RT regarding PDK is inaccurate in fact.

    If you wish to discuss these and other matters, you can rest assured, there are plenty of people here willing and able to discuss these things with you.

    Like Gnil, I think your views are more indicative of your infrequent visits here rather than being reflective of the reality on the ground.

    There's only one way to put that right - please come and visit more often

    Alan - your reference to fewer new posts is, IMHO, partially due to the much improved search facility that R/T2 provides.  One can search and research just about any subject right back to R/T's conception, whereas previously there were multitudes of repeated threads under slightly differing titles...

    You don't see the comment  "Oh no! not that question again" anything like as often as you do on other forums or did on R/T1.

    I don't mean to be rude, but your personal contribution of 199 posts in five and a half years is hardly conducive with pushing up the total threads is it?  I mean.. why not comment on your own experiences rather than wait for a lead.  It's good that you've started this thread and I'm really glad you did... but not necessarily for the same reason.

    In reply to your comments on PDK, I think most negative remarks come from people trying it for the first time without living with it and learning how to use it properly.  It took me well over a month to get the hang of being in the right driving mode and gear to suit the prevailing traffic conditions.  So, yes there can be some jerkiness, but only if the driver is in the wrong mode/gear for the conditions at the time.

    Having said all that it's really good to hear from you again..

    IMO, the merits of the PDK system cannot be recognized in the context of a test drive or even in the duration of a driving event. Due to its various modes it takes time to acclimatize in order to get the best out of the system. You need to learn when to use what mode among the 6 available and how to modulate the gas pedal and the brake pedal to bring the desired outcome in Auto.

    I came from a series of manual cars including several Porsches, but after 2+ years with PDK I would never go back to the "stick". I am not claiming that PDK is the best DCT system because I only have experience of DSG and not of any others.

    But there is a gear lever in the case of PDK, albeit different. I think what you need really is the clutch pedal to control and feel engaging and disengaging power.

    I know - but it's not just a clutch pedal that I would miss (although that is one aspect). It's also the way one operates the gear lever. Moving it forward or back to change up/down 'digitally' (i.e. without gear slots) is just not my thing. I like moving the lever 'mechanically' from slot to slot. It's one of those few 'analogue' pleasures that should remain IMvHO Smiley

    That's precisely what I was trying to communicate in my post above...you have described it with much more fluency than I was able to convey.. Smiley

    @ Easy - you really should try PDK with paddles and sport design steering wheel - it really is a different dimension.... given the time to master it!..Smiley
