    Best route - Calais to Zurich

    Hi guys. doing this route tomorrow. Looking for suggestions as to the best route to take. Belgium/Germany or France/Strasbourg. Any suggestions??

    Avoid Belgium, too much trafic.

    How about South France (Nizza), Italy (coast, then up to Milano) and from there Lugano, Zurich?
    May be longer but it is a very nice route.

    Good Idea RC but I am already doing it in the reverse direction. Zurich, Davos, Como, Briancon, Monaco, Aix.... Only trying to work out the boring part of the route...

    Too much damn traffic everywhere these days!

    You just have to avoid Brussels around rush-hour time, and you could get lucky.

    Try: Calais - Ostende - Brussels - Liege/Luik/Lüttich (Same place, different names! ) - Aachen - A4 towards Köln, but leave it to head south on A61 past Bonn, Koblenz, eventally Hockenheim , joining A5 towards Karlsruhe, follow signs to Basel and , if you're lucky you cross the German/Swiss border after 8 hours driving time at speeds which won't get you into too much trouble.

    It may not look like the most direct route on the map, but it is one of the fastest because there are fewer gaps in the Autoroute / Autobahn links.

    How much time to you have?

    Should you cross the border around Aachen I would seriously consider a stop at the Nürburgring - though I would initially choose my route to go there. It's a pain to go there from Aachen directly.

    Besides that it depends on what you are looking for. There are enough nice places to see on the way. From the Loreley at the Mosel river down to the Vitra museum down at Weil am Rhein (should you be interested in design and arts).
    I would seriously consider to pass Lake Constance. You can in fact use a ferry from Meersburg to Constance (Konstanz), it's only an hour or so to Zürich from there.

    Which route you might choose, it sounds like a faboulous trip. Enjoy and show us some pics!

    avoid Basel if you can...spent 1h in a jam last week-end...
    all the highway goes through a red light which is green for 9 seconds (had the time to time it) before it goes red again. awful.
