    998 3.0 (soft) turbo

     Today I heard from a P sales rep the that Porsche might launch a kind of a entry "soft" 998 turbo. Is there any truth to this rumor?  Kind of interesting idea, if >= 350 hp and >450Nm.

    To meet future environmental/emissions laws, this has been discussed. Can't say more but apparently there will be another Turbo engine in the Porsche model line but I don't have a clue if it is going to be in the 911 or the Boxster/Cayman.

    Same rumor I heard. But as RC stated, I also heard it in combination with the Boxster/Cayman!

    how will this affect the sound note of our common Porsches :( 

    I suspect high pitched honda S2000 sounding boxster, but it will make me cry the day i hear it....

    indeed shifting is ancient technology - so is a fuel burning engine..  I happen to like both :)

    Actually, a small turbo engine would make more sense in the Boxster/Cayman segment. Base-S-turbo. In the 911 line it would rather confuse customers.

     My 2c:     If the engine only needs to produce 350hp, I suspect that most drivers would prefer a higher-revving, more spontaneous normally-aspirated engine to a turbo engine with a similar power figure.

    This of course does not mean that a turbo might not make sense as a means of reducing a production fleet's overall fuel consumption figures, as mooted above.

    I don't know but when driving my wife's M3 Cab DCG, I sometimes wish that BMW would use on the M3 V8 engine a small turbo charger, just for the 2000-5000 rpm rev range to "fill the gap". The high revving V8 sounds nice and it revs fast and clean but I somehow miss some power in the lower rev range.

    RC, I cannot agree more with your comment. My winter car is a Audi S5 V6T and I absolutely love the torque from low revs. Ideal for US traffic where high revving and speed is unfortunately the  exception to the rule. Actually my S5 inspired me to think about a 998 GT soft turbo. But again, I think, if at all, this engine will be housed in the Boxster&Cayman. Servus!Smiley

    This would be a  dream come true to most Porsche tuners, and they would sell power upgrades like cakes fro this entry level model.

    How old is the 944 ? Smiley

    old enough to qualify for classic car insurance! It is still an alu block and head though.
