    Windscreen replacement

I have a nasty crack in my windscreen which is getting longer, so the screen needs to be replaced. What experiences have other contributors had using specialists or OPC to replace the screen? Tips and recommendations welcome, please.

    Re: Windscreen replacement

Apparently many OPC's in the UK outsource windscreen replacement to a specialist, so maybe worth going directly to someone like Addison Group (used by AFN) or finding out who your local OPC would use...

    Re: Windscreen replacement

Make _darn_ sure they get the correct _Porsche_ windshield with the correct antenna (antennas?) embedded in the glass. Make sure the guy connects the antenna before he installs windshield. Check and see if our windshields even have an antenna! IOW, call around on your own to the dealer parts departments and get part numbers. Make sure these don't conflict with the part number of the WS the guy is about to install.

Make sure the installer puts a drop cloth in the car during de-installation and installation. Otherwise you'll have WS debris in your car forever.

    Re: Windscreen replacement

    Okay. These are my tips.

Autoglass replaced mine and made a pigs ear of it. Had to get the OPC to fit it again as I refused to let Autoglass have another go. My insurance co. understood my issues and let me take it to the OPC so it could be done properly.

Anyway, here's what I remember specifically.

    1) Porsche are the only supplier of front windscreens, so you will get an OEM part and not some crappy pattern part.

    2) Make a mental note of any wind/cabin noise before the screen is replaced. You'll be paranoid if you feel it is noisier when it's replaced.

    3) Check the seal around the glass in situ. Show this to the company changing the glass as it's quite a precise thing refitting it. It looks like the glass isn't fitted correctly as you can see the edge of the glass. This is correct and quite the norm but the edge you see is only slight.

    4) Use your finger to pull the glass seal away from the corner pillar just above the bonnet and check to see if any water is released. I never noticed that the seal trapped water until after it was replaced so I'm not sure if this a problem waiting to happen or the norm.

    5) Make sure the glass company doing the fitting has already done a "997" before. When I took mine in they had instructions relating to a 996 which is NOT the same. Muppets.

    6) When the glass is removed, there is a secondary seal stuck in the channel. They "MUST" remove this and replace it with the new one that comes with the new windscreen. NOT chuck it away like the idiots did with mine!!!

    7) When the glass is replaced, check inside the car around the perimeter to make sure they have not applied too much sealant and it has not squirted out and is visible. It might be difficult to see as the sealant is clear and it's on a black background (The shadow band)

    8) Tell them to use the right torque screw size to remove the cover under the wipers as they are easily damaged and look like crap when they are.

    9) Connect the Sat Nav connector etc as already mentioned.

    10) Use wing protectors that are clean from grit. NOT like they did with mine scratching both wings. In fact point out there are no scratches on the wings before they start.

    11) Make sure the rear view mirror is stuck to the glass correctly and seated completely flat. There should be no bubbles.

    12) There's one more but it escapes me for now...

Tell the OPC these tips also as they also cocked mine up.

    [edit]

    12) You're supposed to leave the glass stuck in place for 24 hours before you drive it. This ensures the integrity of the body is intact and safe. The body gets a lot of it's strength from the screen.

    Good work ResB.

Gonna copy and file your tips in case I need a new windshield someday.

Must be my most informative post ever. Mine still isn't right.

    Re: Windscreen replacement

Make sure they remember to plug in the Nav antenna, my installer forgot to plug them back (different from the antenna imbedded in the glass), nav couldn't get a Sat signal.

    Re: Windscreen replacement

Great info ResB... useful if I ever have to replace my windscreen.
From previous experience Autoglass have been useless.

    Re: Windscreen replacement

I had a windscreen replacement done in my last Boxster, Porsche Insurance used RAC Windscreens and they were first class. No problems whatsoever.

Autoglass are totally $hit, made a complete and total cock-up of a windscreen job in a Ford Focus that I had at the time. Scored the first windscreen they tried to fit, cut through the radar detector wiring that fed up the pillar trim, even though I'd warned them it was there ( and then refused to replace it), tore out the internal plastic liner under the bonnet so all the plastic fastenings had to be replaced... I wouldn't let those clowns within a thousand light years of my Porsche. Or any other car of mine, for that matter.

Thanks ResB for such an informative post I'm going to file it for future reference.

BTW: any connections needing to be reconnected re: rain sensor?

I think the sensor's wire just drops down from the headliner to the mirror base.

Good point though. The installer better be knowlegable about the _proper_ and approved re-installation of the mirror to the glass.

That's right. I understand for the sensor to work correctly the rear view mirror has to be flush when stuck to the glass and with no bubbles evident. If the windscreen isn't fully seated correctly it sits to car out, therefore the mirror cannot secure correctly.

    Re: Windscreen replacement

windscreen? it's not even a screen. i imagine a screen to be somewhat porous. now windshield, that makes more sense. windscreen is that useless thing you put behind you in a convertible so your tupe doesn't fly off. i love the british, they make american sound so funny.

This last item is important. I had my dealer, who relies on an outside glass installer (but the dealer ordered original replacement glass from Porsche - it's manufactured in Belgium by Saint Gobain), do the work. They kept it for the 24 hours to make sure of a good seal. I've had no leaks.

What is interesting is the extent to which the glass bears part of the structural load, which may account for the reason why Rennteam members apparently report a high rate of cracking.

    Re: Windscreen replacement

For UK members: Autoglas did a black BMW of mine a few years ago. The wing protectors they use are often covered in glass and scratch the paintwork on the wings. Pristine to trashed in 2 minutes. Don't let them near your Porsche!!

Almost all modern cars use a bonded in screen (sometimes rear as well) as part of the structure which is why cracks spread so fast and why it's so important to get minor damage repaired quickly.

You may pay a bit extra for insurance through Porsche in the UK but in my experience you get less grief when you have to use it.

    Re: Windscreen replacement

My front windshield is being replace right now at the body shop after the deer accident (6 weeks ago?). Hopefully, I will get the car back this week and let you guys know.

    Re: Windscreen replacement

Another key point I learned when I had my windshield replaced. The installer did not use an OEM seal between the rearview mirror and the windshield. Reason is that when I inspected the windshield replacement, I noticed that there were small bubbles in the seal (looking down at the windshield). Just for grins, I took my 997 to my Porsche dealer and they said that happens when installers do not use a OEM seal. I asked my dealer to remove the rearview mirror and replace the seal with an OEM seal. When they did the bubbles were not present. Went back to the installer, comfronted them with the situation, and they admitted that their technician had used a BMW OEM seal. They paid for my dealership cost. Lastly, I was told to keep my windows down for a couple of days to allow degassing to occur to assist in sealing. Am not sure if that is true, but since it sits in the garage all the time, it was no big deal.

    Re: Windscreen replacement

Always best to leave the windows down after a degass
