I like the idea that the future Turbo is a Turbo-Hybrid... which will give the extra required push!

come on... thats the future - we all know! How else you would push it below the 3 seconds mark!

If there wouldnt have been an water cooled, if there wouldnt have been an injector, if there wouldnt have been pdk, ..... the evolution is the future!

You can't compare the water cooled, injectors or PDK, to a 4 cilinder engine on a 911. I agree with all those evolutions(4 cilinder apart), but using the term evolution to justify a 4 cylinder engine is like having a Diesel engine on the 911 justified by the economy it will provide, you won't see it.

    Re: 991 Facelift...new engines?

Yes - you can compare this! The  engine will be stronger as today and the sound probably better, too. So no reason to stay where we are. And I'm sure we all will like it (somehow). Bigger is better... Right? :)

    Re: 991 Facelift...new engines?

Just read that the 2014 LMP1 car also has a 4-cilinder engine... So seems logical that that development makes its way to the production models some day.

    Re: 991 Facelift...new engines?

4 cylinder has, in the recent history and until now at least,  never been (imho) a synonym for a sport car (with probably few exceptions such as the e30 M3) .  With Porsche  racing Le Mans with a 4 cylinder  they will achieve, through their skillful marketing , to add value to a 4 cyl engine concept in their sport cars line up. I have no doubt the will do a great job but I am not much excited about a 4 cyl 911 (the sound alone > I guess it will be difficult to reproduce the flat six sound on a 4 pot).

ist all relative...in the future, 4 cylinders might be referred to as 'big blocks' compared to cars with 2 nd 3 cylinders.

we are conditioned to include the Sound of a car in evaluating its sportiness.....this will Change.

    Re: 991 Facelift...new engines?

My first Porsche was a 944 S2 (3l, 211 hp) and there was a time, I would even have liked to look out for a 968 Turbo S (remember, Turbo charged 4cyl., 305 hp...290 km/h...)...on the track, I never felt that the 20 % difference in hp to the 964 (250 hp) was a real disadvantage...Therefore, if Porsche decides to introduce a new turbo charged 4cyl engine - YES, YES, I will like that...

Currently, there is no decision for a 4-cyl. in the 911. Nada. Smiley However, the 4-cyl. development engines for Boxster/Cayman of course would fit a future 911 too (if necessary).

The EU has established new CO2 output limitations by 2020. Very restrictive.

Car manufacturers cannot ignore them and I'm afraid that sooner or later, it will hit the small manufacturers like Ferrari, Lamborghini and others pretty hard. Only solution I see: To integrate these companies in larger ones.

however, what will they call the 911 Turbo in the future ?

I think the Macan shows what the naming practice is going to be: the S is turbocharged; the Turbo is more turbocharged. And I assume the base car will have a 4-cylinder engine, also turbocharged.

Given the benefits of (turbo) charge-compounding to engine efficiency, it's going to be turbos everywhere in the near future. Even Ferrari is going in that direction.

The car on the photos is camoflaged and other than a few cosmetic changes in the front bumper incl. turn signals and the "3D" tail lights, there is no other difference.  Way better... indecision

these " 911-50 " wheels look GREAT w/o the retro paint scheme as on the current special edition !

Unfortunately , it looks like they are gonna muck up the current sleek , thin  triangular rear lamp clusters by enlarging and squaring  them off for 991.2 , like they did from 997.1 to the ungainly  saggy- eyelids 997.2 rear lights .

    Re: 991 Facelift...new engines?

i didn't like the 997.2 tail light shape either.

    Re: 991 Facelift...new engines?

I think we are seeing the 991.2 Carrera front bumper and back lights .  The front is not aggressive enough to be the next  turbo and it looks very much like a Carrera evolution .  But is silly from P to show it on a Turbo .

The 991.2 looks again a much more intregrated front look as it was with 997.2   . Seems to be a pattern . And I like the integrated look much better .

To save money during development, it is very possible that they use the same mules for different purposes. Maybe this was a Turbo mule and they just used the new Carrera facelift parts on it or whatever, it could be possible. I agree, if true, it may not have been the most clever idea (even if it would and did confuse the press) but on the other hand, the internet is full of rumors and stuff, so we shouldn't really take it too serious.

I can imagine (a little bit) that the 991 Turbo/Turbo S would get the Carrera facelift design elements but I cannot imagine that an actual Turbo/Turbo S facelift is going to happen within the next 24 months. Pretty much excluded.

I forgot: No 4-cyl. for the 911 but I'm afraid Boxster and Cayman drivers won't be happy. angry

Speaking of Cayman: Cayman GT4 seems to be a sure thing.

The turbo motors will make for a huge performance boost here at high altitude.

RC- What are your rumors or guesses at the specification for a Cayman GT4?

Don't put your hopes up, there is a reason they call it GT4 and not GT3. Smiley

Auto Zeitung says GT4 will be Twin-Turbo Flat-6.  Do you agree?  Maybe same motor as facelift Carrera or Carrera S?

All I know is that it won't be a 4-cyl. Smiley Don't expect a huge power bump though (vs. the Cayman S). I heard something about 360 hp but as I said before, rumors need to be taken with a grain of salt. There is soooooo much going on at Porsche right now, I started to loose count. Smiley

From a production/profit point of view, using the 991 facelift engine for the Cayman GT4 would make A LOT of sense.

Sorry to barge in here like this and continuing the discussion between RC and Grant.

With the introduction of the Cayman GTS now at 340 hp is there any more news regarding a Cayman R replacement, called the GT4 I see.  The GTS doesn't really seem to peak my interest for a more performance, sport oriented Cayman.

    Vielen Dank
