Hmm. I'd have a 981 Boxster over 991 if I didn't need the occasional rear seats. The Cayman always just looked wrong to me - a friend has a poverty spec base model and he loves it (had from new and covered over 70,000 miles with the only expense being bulbs, brakes & tyres) I still think it looks like a mutt though.

A coupe based on a convertible styling will never look quite "right" - but the same applies in reverse, to me the 911 cabrios look a real mess although the latest 991 cabrio is an improvement IMO.

Would you really want a modern Porsche to sound like a wet fart - because that's what Subarus sound like to me! I'd rather have a lower powered flat six howl than that sound thank you very much.

Try listening to a well tuned Alfa boxer engine and you may well be surprised.

I agree with this - I was never a fan of 911 cabrios because they just looked wrong; their introduction in the 80s was to satisfy a market trend and they've been around ever since. I believe that the 991 fixed some of the exterior awkwardness and does a great job maintaining the car's silhouette, but the picture of the white cab with red roof posted somewhere on here still manages to look a bit stunted.

The 987 Boxster and Cayman were a bit interesting; I find the 987 Boxster to look quite good from the front and front 3/4 angle but the back is a bit too docile and plain for me. Although I love the car, the Cayman does look too much like a Boxster with a lazily drawn curve from the windshield to the tail and I can't stand that small 'dimple'/crease in the rear window screen where it's sunken into the rear door. Although I love the Cayman's haunches and curves, I thought that Porsche could tweak quite a bit of it and improve on its design. Here's hoping the 981 Cayman fixes some of the to-be-desired details in the old car.

First images surface from the configurator.

As I thought, no rounded DRLs in front.

It's only a 3D model. Usually those look very bad in comparison to real life.

But I kinda agree. It's first time that I prefer Boxster to Cayman. Smiley

Re: Virtuallu undisguised 981 Cayman Thread Closed

The roofline could've been a little lower IMO, that's what bothered me most on the 987 Cayman as well...

Different kettle of fish entirely! In my young days I owned 3 Alfasuds, a 1.2, a 1.3 Ti and a Sprint Veloce 1.5. Yes an amazing sound especially the Sprint, but that was as much to do with the twin down draught Dell'Orto carburettors as the flat four configuration. And of course the sparkle and character that only the Italians can build into their cars Smiley

Re: Virtuallu undisguised 981 Cayman Thread Closed

I owned an Alfasud 1.3 Ti too (my third Alfa Romeo after 2 rear drive twin cams), which was fantastic in terms of handling and ride on twisty roads and the flat 4 was as free revving as ever. I had a huge accident when at about 120km/h on a country road the front tyre ( quite new Firestone) exploded, the car rolled several times and ended up at the bottom of sloping field. I found myself thrown out of the windscreen which at some stage of the roll became detached, some 5 meters away from the overturned car. It was a terrible experience with a lengthy recovery period.

Subsequently, I used the insurance money to buy a 1.5 Ti which was terrible in terms of of dynamics, engine, reliability and build quality for no apparent reason because it was actually the previous model with a bigger engine. Perhaps, a Friday car or the workers were in a hurry to go on strike as it was the habit in Italy then.

That ended my relationship with Italian cars, forever.

Sounded like you were lucky reginos! Smiley After the Suds I had a GTV and GTV6 (the transaxle ones - the GTV6 as per the Bond film Octopussy - and they got the wonderful engine sound spot on in that film) and after going off Alfas for a bit after a couple of years with a Lancia Delta Integrale my final Alfa was a 164 3.0V6  - another fine Alfa. They then became increasingly badge engineered Fiats, sold through disinterested Fiat dealers and that ended my love affair with the marque.

We digress - better get back on topic quick.....Smiley

Some of the Alfa's were awful for rust, still nice cars back in the day however.

I think this is a fluke - a 987 with 981 details. The new Cayman has a much larger rear window that's flush with the rear door.

I think Porsche's toying with us. The reveal can't be far now.

Re: Virtuallu undisguised 981 Cayman Thread Closed

This doesn't even look like it's from the official Porsche configurator - so why would we assume that it's an accurate rendering?

Re: Virtuallu undisguised 981 Cayman Thread Closed

I've owned a number of 'suds and 33's and the last 33 I had was the series 3 1.7 16V Cloverleaf with fuel injection which still sounded like a proper Alfa flat four.

No real surprises, but amazing! Can't wait to see the final thing, this thing beats the old Cayman into oblivion.

I spied two little things on this car that aren't available on the 981 Boxster: Porsche Entry & Drive buttons on the doorknob and galvanized Burmester speakers in the doors. Are these options finally coming to the 981?

Re: Virtually undisguised 981 Cayman Thread Closed

Very Cool! Although I would prefer linear DRLs...

Seems like they wanted to separate it more from the Boxster, which is valid in a way....

Re: Virtually undisguised 981 Cayman Thread Closed

Front looks really good, still a bit worried about the roofline..

Re: Virtually undisguised 981 Cayman Thread Closed

Actually there is one thing that bothers me with the round DRL of the new Cayman. If the fins are not painted then it might look a bit awkward having 2 small roundish lights there...

The above Cayman looks as if it had the exterior paint package (fins and lower frontlip painted), or what is it called in the configurator ?
